My wife is HPSP/MS3 and is graduating May 31, 2014. I understand commissioning is that same day/week. How long does she have to report for residency? Where can I find information regarding moving/relocating? Does moving from med school to residency location count as a PCS? Trying to stay ahead of what's to come.

Thank in advance for any tips.

Shed probably have to report sometime first or secod week of June (the exact date depends on the program/location). Yes, it is a pcs move. Try militaryonesource.com

My PCS move tips:
-flexibility is key
-you can't schedule anything until she gets her official orders
-once you have orders in hand, you will set up an appointment and arrange move dates & details.
-You do not need a destination address finalized to have your house packed up; USGOV will store it for a reasonable time while you find a new house (if needed).
-you do get some special allowances (dislocation allowances) that offset some of the moving-related costs (this allowance is in addition to travel)
- Your travel, her travel, her check in to the new command, and the PCS are not connected events (as you might think); You will make the arrangements separately.
-She will likely get a sponsor at your destination duty station (probably a future coworker) who can help in some of the details.
Hope this helps.I've done 5 PCS's- and there is a twist every time.

Hook's PCS tips:

-Buy a trailer and fill it up. A DITY for your first PCS will pay for the trailer that you can then use again on future moves.

-Every move where you drive your POV should be a partial DITY.

-Take digital pics of anything valuable. Get appraisals on anything unique (antiques, jewelry, etc)

-Use the full amount of travel time allotted. It's not leave, it's not comp time to set up your house...it's time for traveling and it goes away once you're at your new duty location. Drive your 350 miles per day, then go see our great country.

-Most Drury Inns and Motel 6s take pets. Per Diem gets paid differently than when on a TDY...the money you save on hotel costs go back to you.

-Add some leave time on to your orders. It's nice to take leave after you've out-processed because nobody will call you about anything work-related.

-The packers know what is allowed to be shipped and what isn't. They're also underpaid manual laborers. Sometimes, a little juice will get your "bottle collection" packed.

-Get the phone number of your truck driver if you plan on meeting him on the other end.

--5 PCSs for me as well....but I'm still an O-3.

+1 on the extra bread to get that "bottle collection" packed; buying lunch for the movers is a good gesture/ way to get less of your stuff smashed.

Unless she is off cycle due to childbirth, academic problems, late reporting, or whatever then she started residency July 1st and should finish June 30th. This means that she will be eligible to accept orders for July of 2014 sometime that year. Some programs have the Detailor come and visit them and they can get "penciled in". With that said, this by no means is final! Do NOT make concrete plans until you have hard copy orders in hand and even then be prepared for ORDMODs at the last minute changing duty stations and date of check in. It would be nice to take as much time as they let you. If she is going operational or something similar, don't count on sitting around for a month. For me, my orders said report in July. To me, this translated into checking in 31 July at 2359. I, however, got the call a week before graduation asking what TIME I was graduating and could leave the area (no kidding). An ORDMOD followed shortly after that, which had me check in upon ariving in the area, so after my maximum allowed travel days, I was on a plane to catch my new command. As everyone has mentioned to you, "stay flexible". This cannot be overstated.

OP is a med-student not a resident. That said, as soon as she finds out where she matches she should contact the PD or the chief resident. They should be able to give the rough timeline before the official paperwork comes out. As everyone said though...do NOT make concrete plans until you have orders...residencies will occasionally still horsetrade and you aren't in until you sign your contract during orientation in June.

thought i'd bump this rather than start a new thread. i'm heading from east coast to west coast (madigan) and i have only a handful of days to get there after graduation. my in-laws are actually going to drive back with my family (doing a dity, we dont have tons of stuff and moving ourselves is pretty uncomplicated, but thats not my ?) what i'm wondering is does anyone have any experience or know a friend of a friend who was in a similar situation as me---report date is june 3, would my orders be cut for the 2nd allowing me to fly back the day before reporting? do i just have to fly back on my own dime? i haz no idea....1st pcs

I'm in the same boat, I graduate the 28th, report date is June 2. And planning a DITY from east to west coast. Im planning on having the truck packed and ready to roll, ill drive the moving truck and my wife and kids will follow in our POV.
As I understand, you are paid travel expenses and per diem for you and each dependent (partial perdiem for them) but only if they travel with you.

we are hammering out the details, but if thats the case we will be driving like madmen with coffee being pumped straight into our veins:bang:

Yeah they sort of treat the PCS timeline as a job. I got pushed back my first day and a casual trip down the east coast turned into a white knuckled press to make it from PA to FL in, basically, two days.

Oh man. It's going to be so frustrating that you had to bust your ass to get you and your family out there by report date once you see what inprocessing is like 🙁

The military has rules on how far you can travel in a day (really low miles actually) so you can use that in your favor to push back your RNLTD. You can ask for your orders to be changed (or your boss can).
That being said, for the long boring in processing for internship, you probably have to be there when they say. I have seen cray short RNLTD for people who were graduating in Miami and had to drive to west coast
in 2 days. Not necessary to kill yourself over some nitwits clueless data entry. Plus you can always say you have to "out process" after residency or fellowship and have to stick around for a few days. Keep in mind that if they think your travel should take 5 days and you report 14 days later, you will be charged leave for the difference.

What I don't like to see, but will continue to happen, are those GMOs who are supposed to start residency 1 July and their boss thinks they own them until July 15th because that's the day they signed in 2 years prior.
That's just plain stupid.

I feel like I remember reading a memo stating that this was new policy, in the Army that is. So, it's coming from MEDCOM and not necessarily the field commanders, which, obviously, doesn't make it any less annoying or dumb.

Not exactly sure what you mean, but you + dependents are definitely authorized commercial air. Not sure how it works if you fly and they drive, but I'd think that's a fairly common situation.

Call Waller Hall main # (253-967-7004) and talk to the travel section.

I almost had this problem when I left my GMO tour with the Marines.

Then I reminded my Lt Colonel CO that midway through a deployment one of our gunnery sergeants (E7) made 1st sergeant (E8) and was immediately pulled out of his line company and moved. As in, pulled off a FOB and put on an aircraft. Because that's what the Marines do - when a Marine is selected for promotion, they get moved to a position more appropriate for their rank, right away. Once my CO understood that getting "selected" for residency is akin to promotion, suddenly it was obvious and understood that I needed to be there by July 1st. So I left and started on time, even though it left a gap at that unit until the next batch of new GMOs could get there and go through FMSS and start working in August.
