Hi

Does anybody have any advice for applying to 1+3 programs? Any info that people out there use for stuff like applying to a transitional year?

Thanks 😛

You can PM me any particular questions you have... I am not exactly sure what you are seeking from your post.

I am advanced matched to a 2,3,4 program and matched at a TY at the same location, Univ of Mississippi. My TY year is through Anes and has been GREAT so far. I get many ICU months, a few ED months, some cards, OB, anes, trauma, Ortho.... Probably the only drawback is that you are almost always the 'offservice guy', but that can work in your favor...its a bit easier to slack on those rough days without anyone really caring or noticing.

When looking at 2,3,4's make sure you seek out a place that actively allows moonlighting. You will hear people tell you that 'its the 100K mistake' (which people seem to claim is the biggest 4 yr problem), but I will make that up times over from moonlighting. The other great thing, is that as a PGY2, we only do about 3 months off service (all in one block together: PICU, MICU, and CICU). The rest of the time is Adult ED, Peds ED, EMS, Telemedicine, Toxicology, Research, and Elective time.

PGY2 works about 16 twelves each month, a PGY4 works about 13-14 twelves each month....obviously plenty of free time to mow the grass, vacation to the coast, or work some moonlighting gigs.

em_b,

thanks again for the advice, i wish i'd figured out the whole 1+3/TY/PY deal before applying -- it adds a whole new wrinkle to the application process. this should be really interesting in the coming week or so...

i'd only apply to prelims/ty's in your medical school city. to try to align them to programs you might apply/interview with, is way too difficult, expensive and time consuming.

somebody please tell me which prelim programs to apply to in new england, preferably not competitive. eternal gratitude from me to those who help me out... ugh i am so behind in this process
