Transplant hepatology

Hi guys, I have an opportunity to get into a transplant hepatology fellowship for a year at the PGY4 level. I couldn't Match GI this year. I believe this will help in next Match, but I have seen some physicians working as "transplant Hepatologist " without completing a GI fellowship. Although searched through criteria that say ABIM and GI certification is mandatory for transplant hepatology certification unless special consideration is granted by Transplant hepatology PD.
Now question is

How wise is spending a fellow year anticipating a good match outcome?

And secondly, is there a career ONLY after transplant hepatology, even if you don't get a match for GI ?

It’s tricky and dependent on your situation.

1.) You’re losing money instead of hospitalist.
2.) While it demonstrates passion, no pubs/connections are generated for the cycle you’re aiming for so only do it if you’re aiming for another cycle after.
3.) Chief looks better, especially at an academic program
4.) If you do the year, fail to match, and are applying again but don’t have any new publications or connections, it’s almost going to be seen as a negative.

know many folks who matched GI after transplant. connections, keep publishing till application date. its not guarantee but better than nothing. as noted above, chief in academic program is best but those fill in 2nd year in almost all places
