Travelling Anesthesiologists?

Hey all,

I'm currently a 3rd year med student seriously considering a life in anesthesiology. My wife is in nursing school, and while recently discussing our future careers we entertained the idea of her working as a travelling nurse. I'm wondering, then, if there is also such thing as a travelling anesthesiologist? If so, can anyone comment on the life of such a career?

Sure, they're called locum tenens anesthesiologists. They fill in for groups that need to cover anesthetizing locations while group members are on vacation, or while a group tries to fill an open position in with a permanent hire. There are definitely pros and cons to the lifestyle and practice environment of locums anesthesiologists...they've actually been discussed on this forum quite a bit recently, so I would try a search on that.

I have a number of Anesthesiologist friends who do locum tenens exclusively. They LOVE it. They goto a number of different places every year (pretty much of their choosing) work for a couple months make good money and avoid all of the politics each department has. So it is certainly an option.
