hey all...I have noticed certain trends in talking with people (ok...I realize level 3 evidence means jack, but bear with me)

Applicants for anes: UP
Applicants for peds: DOWN
Applicants for Ob/Gyn: duh!!
Applicants for EM: UP
Applicants for FP: hello...anyone out there...Bueller....is that you?
Applicants for Surg: UP

(by this, I mean the CURRENT year...with the match stats coming out in March, 05)

What's the trend in IM?

(apologies if there already exists a thread like this)

Down. And everyone who gets in is going for fellowships.

Actually, on all my interviews I keep hearing how the applications for peds have gone way up this year.

The program director for UNC told us that they received more applications for IM this year than they have in the past 20 years. I don't know if that is representative for programs throughout the nation though.

Agree that number of IM applicants may be up, but I think the focus of most IM residents now is fellowships, so it might be a different kind of applicant. Could be very wrong about this, but have a feeling that lifestyle specialties inside and outside of medicine are up.
