Trivia - ophthalmologists as cordwainers

I heard an interesting talk yesterday on the AD 1348 outbreak of bubonic plague in Florence. The talk touched upon medical training at the time, as well as the duties of physicians and surgeons. Apparently Florentine ophthalmologists used to double as shoemakers.

I guess I can always do this when optometrists replace general ophthalmologists.

It sounds like a good idea at the moment - however, I'm sure that legislators will soon grant shoemaking rights to optometrists.
