I heard an interesting talk yesterday on the AD 1348 outbreak of bubonic plague in Florence. The talk touched upon medical training at the time, as well as the duties of physicians and surgeons. Apparently Florentine ophthalmologists used to double as shoemakers.

It sounds like a good idea at the moment - however, I'm sure that legislators will soon grant shoemaking rights to optometrists.
