So I found on the internet somewhere that "fourth year medical students line up to change their names" at the end of their year because it's their last chance... they can't change their names afterward without nullifying the entire MD they'd earned. Could this possibly be true? That seems ridiculous... what about women doctors who choose to change or hyphenate their names when they get married? It's a tradition that many people still adhere to...

Um, you can still change your name. It just becomes more of a pain as it involves more paperwork. And may cost you goodwill if you build a professional reputation under the prior name.

Are these students changing their last name to evil by any chance, and are they bald

sorry had to do it

That would be wrong because evil medical school last longer than regular medical school (6 vs 4). Turns out replacing ethics classes with evil ethics classes makes medical school longer. I suppose you learn torture methods, too.

I think they mean you can't change your last name after you get your MD without having to go through a long process of paperwork since your name is on your MD diploma and you would need to get a new copy with your name on it.

As a recent name-changer, name changing becomes more and more complicated as you get older. The reason why is you have to contact so many agencies to change your name in their system. So for me, after getting my court-approved name change document I had to contact:

1) Social security
2) MVA
3) Ugrad registrar
4) Med school registrar
5) Health insurance

If I had done it when I was a teenager, I just had to get 1) done. However, getting my name change was great. My formal name is finally a name everybody knows me by even though I'm a boy with a girl's name (Sandy), and I don't have to explain why I use a common name. I strongly recommend name-changing especially if you have a name you really, really don't like and is hard to pronouce. I feel so much better after my name change!

To change your name on your diploma, you submit your court order to the registrar and pay $$ for another diploma and after some weeks, you get your diploma with your new name! I hope this helps.

Or you can do what lots of women do.

be Dr Maiden Name and Mrs Married Name. It's GREAT. Heh heh heh. Clients can't find you in the phone book but friends can etc.

Split personality! 😉

This is the only thread I have found ACTUALLY answering the question of HOW to change your name, not SHOULD I change my name. I don't want a debate on if I should, just need to know the process 🙂

Considering this "bump" is almost 6 years later, anyone else with name changes in fourth year of medical school?

The easy route I guess, would be to just change my name, submit paperwork to school in March. I was hoping that I could have my name read as "First Middle Old New" and then continue on through my life as "First Middle New"... School says they read what they get from enrollment services...

I am wondering what processes everyone went through to get their name changed prior to starting residency... How does the licensing board get your name, so to speak? And the time frame?

(Assuming SS office --> DMV --> ?? undergrad ?? (annoying) --> Med School --> Residency program (post match)
