Im trying to write a new one but its awful. the first one was def all my heart....i don't know what to do. anybody have some suggestions....

just a thought . maybe you can write that not getting in made you realize how much more you want to go medical school.

im in the same boat. i've been working on mine for three weeks and im still stuck on the intro...

i don't know if I want to focus on a negative -- like not getting in. Thought maybe i would convey the same idea but in a differen't manner? what do you think?

theDr.,

You need to ask yourself, "What do I want the ADCOMS to know about me that is NOT located elsewhere in the application?" You want to show the ADCOMS who you are, what motivation you have for becoming a doctor, and what qualities you possess that will make you a good physician.

Jot down a couple of ideas that you would like to express with the ADCOMS. Remember, PS are like a good book, in that a solid intro will get the interviewer's attention. Just keep in mind that you want to "show" the ADCOMS who you are and not "tell" them by using a passive voice.

If you would like to jot down some ideas, i would be happy to help you out as much as possible. If you want just PM me the info and I will see what we can come up with.

Good luck

My advice, never focus on a previous application cycle. June 1st starts everything over again. You want to show what you have done to improve your application and stats. If you dwell too much on previous applications, you doubt yourself and this is not healthy. I know this from experience! 😛

Good luck,

When I reapplied, I said something in my personal statement about how not getting in during the previous cycle made me more determined to get in the second time around. I also said something about how my year out of anything academic or medicine related made me realize that medicine is what I want to do for my career.

Just a few thoughts...oh, and personal statements suck! 🙂

I'd get as many readers, objective if possible, to read over it. Get someone that is familiar with the process. I've had friends read mine. And I used an editing service. They assigned me an editor that's actually been through the process, starting medical school. I used www.essayrx.com
Originally, I went with them because they are cheaper than other editing services. But I used them for a couple of my secondaries too. It made the difference. Also took off some of the stress.

But if you have good friends that can write, save your money and use them instead of an editing service. But the key is having someone that understands the demands of this type of essay. An English professor might know how to write an essay. But this type of essay will be read alone with 50 other essays in a day. So, you need to grab their attention. Less is more, so it needs to be tight.

Good luck. I'm so glad that this is behind me.

essayRx helped me, but it was because I'm not always confident. But it did help to smooth out my essay last year. I actually keep in touch with one of the editors now.

But if you have a friend the knows the process and can write, use that person. I think the key to a great essay is be honest, creative, and succinct. You want to have every word there for a reason.

I'm having a tough time getting started on my personal statement as well...I've been putting off starting it for weeks! I wrote an intro but it absolutely sucks.

well, back to filling in "course information."

theDr.,

I have your PS and I will try to read it today. I have a couple of others to read as well, so please overlook me if it takes a little longer to get it back to you.

hey Radionut,

sit down and try to brainstorm about the things that you would like the ADCOMS to know about you, that is not included in the rest of the PS. What motivated you to want to pursue medicine? What events led to you wanting to go into medicine? What unique perspective do you have that would make you a great medical student and one day a physician?

Write down some ideas and I guarantee that you will have enough to write a powerful essay. Dont be afraid to talk about your accomplishments, you have to sell yourself to the ADCOMS.
