On my first rotation of third year of med school, one of the notoriously gruff OB/GYN chiefs stopped us in the hallway and without any chitchat just said "doctors tuck." Since then, I couldn't do anything else--I think I'm still afraid of her though

Anecdotally, I can always seem to separate physicians from nurses and techs by whether they are tucked or untucked

I usually go with khakis and a white oxford (tucked) that has my name and the name of my institution embroidered on it.

But when I go scrubs, its untucked because my balls are just so big.

tucked for sure. I am partial to some of our trend-setting attendings including the doc who rocks the untucked scrub top with khakis and the surgeon who wears a suit coat over his tucked scrubs.

I tuck, but it usually ends up untucked in the back about halfway through my shift. If I had time to drink water the 1st half, and I have time to take a leak the 2nd half, then it'll get tucked again.

If they're surgical/hospital scrubs, yea, you gotta tuck em. Some of the more "stylish?" scrubs don't really tuck well and look decent out, so I leave those.

I wear dress shirts so tucked (I like scrubs but that's the culture here). As a resident in scrubs always tucked.

Out of curiosity, is there any reason why doctors traditionally tuck their scrubs in? Does it just come from tucking in dress shirts and it looks more professional, or is there some other reason?

I'd say the majority of residents where I'm at are untucked.

I tuck as an MS. As a resident, I will probably still tuck. If I don't keep up that discipline, I may one day find myself in attending land debating the merits of wearing pants to work.

Untucked. I always feel like I just look downright silly tucked. I will say though that I'm female and pretty much constantly mistaken for a nurse. In the ED even as a student I don't wear a white coat. Hope to never have to.

At one job in Hawai'i, I asked the boss about the dress code. Quote: "We ask that you wear a nametag and shoes." That included slippers (what mainlanders call "flip flops").

Tucking scrubs is for dweebs, you may as well tuck a plaid sweater-vest into some dockers and wear a fanny pack. Worst of all, the few nurses with the chip on their shoulder start tucking too, leaving it all too obvious that their thongs are giving them wedgies which would make an 80's high school bully proud. Think of the children.

I'm absolutely gobsmacked that this many people 1) notice and remember what other's do with their clothing and 2) are concerned enough to remember what they themselves do as far as tucking/not-tucking and 3) that there is an active thread about it.

I dont tuck my shirts into my pants, my jeans into my boots, or my wife beater into my boxer shorts ... in that order. Pretty much anything that can be tucked (from clothing to body parts) should certainly be left untucked (unless we are talking FUPA and then that is the one thing that should always remain tucked).

After seeing a few programs in different areas of the country, I'm not sure if it's program specific or if it's tied to geography, but some places are definitely tucks and others very much untucked.

I have to admit I do. I know it looks silly but I use my phone at work all day. I have one of those plastic holster things for it. In my defense I have never claimed to be cool.

Tucked. I just think I look like a goon without tucking in the scrub top. I guess I never really thought about the fact that nurses and tech don't tuck.

I also think the t-shirt underneath is pretty dweebish. So I guess technically, I'm tucked, no undershirt.
