TUCOM CA Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those on the high waitlist...have you all sent in a letter of intent/extra info to Touro post-interview? I procrastinated way to long on sending in a LOI and I'm totally kicking myself...has anyone heard how much weight is put on this?
...PS while I don't wish this kind of stress on anyone, it's comforting to know I'm not the only one obsessing over news from Touro...goodluck everyone!!

I did send a letter of intent just so they know I am still highly interested and to let them know that my husband is now working in Napa and how amazingly convenient that would be for me. I sent it in April. You might want to send one if you haven't already... Better late then never and at least they know you still want to go there. Maybe email the Dean to see if it is too late or not? Or better yet, call!

My thought is there may be people on the wait-list that still have not informed them of other acceptances, or changes in their plans (people who are on the wait-list and don't care about Touro). I think the letters are a way for the school to know who is still interested and I think (hope) that it will hold some value in their ranking. (i.e. accept the people who are interested first). This is simply my personal opinion of course, so take it how you will.

If I was in your shoes I would seriously consider calling the school and asking if its to late to add a letter of intent to your file. Maybe even faxing them one today.

many members in the facebook group is from class of 2014 and also some other upper class-man who had something to share with the group and had to sign up in order to post in the group. Hope that helps.

That does help... I started having a mini freakout myself when I read that. And it makes total sense that they would have upper classman, cause the whole point is to talk about the booklist, where to move, etc...

Phew, ok that makes me feel better, too. Thanks all for the responses.

So no email yet today. I highly doubt it will come later in the day considering Touro observes the Sabbath and thus closes early on Fridays.

Looks like we will likely have to wait until next week....

called it! I bet we won't hear anything monday either. This is torture.

Torture indeed... But then didn't we decide there wasn't really going to be any particularly meaningful information in that email? Or did someone find out that they will be telling us our place on the list? Maybe I'm just trying to find a way to chill out and be patient. =)

I don't know why these are so funny to me! I am literally laughing through tears! Much needed indeed!

haha the shaved pork one is hilarious!! As far as the content of this email...I have a bad feeling that it's going to be generic information that we already know. I can't believe that last year people on the high wait list were already offered a spot by now :meanie:

I laugh to hilarity at those... I just hope I don't have a pancake attack waiting for movement on the waitlist...

I know! I thought last years cycle went later into May as well... For the sake of sanity, I'm going to assume the email we are all waiting on will contain nothing particularly interesting and I'll just wait for the final decision.

same here...and to make it even better I'm going to assume that the decision will be announced at the end of July.

Seriously, I am hoping that they send out this silly email tomorrow and that they pull people off the list on Tuesday. That its some formality before they start getting on with things. Pancake attack is not far away....

That's a good point too... They sure do drag out their formalities if that is the case. Hoping to get that email ringing in the inbox today.

While I still think that this much-awaited email will be a general, vague statement that will probably leave us less than satisfied, this thought occured to me:

If it is just a non-specific, general email, why is it taking them so long to get it to us? I was originally told it would go out the middle of last week. If they are delaying it (which they seem to be), it would stand to reason they are delaying it for some reason. So...there is a piece of me that holds out hope that they are actually going to give us some specific information. Hopefully it will come later today and we can all stop speculating.

Thats what I am thinking too. I mean how hard would it be for the dean to write us a general update? He must be waiting for the Adcom to give him some info or something. Otherwise why not send us the same letter from last year?

Anyone starting to get that "it ain't coming today" feeling"?

Anyone starting to get that "it ain't coming today" feeling"?

I feel you on that one... I almost wish it were an E. Coast school so I would either get the email right as I woke up, or know by 2pm whether or not it were on it's way.

What do you guys think, will this lingering waiting patience-testing feeling go away once we're in med school? I mean, my thoughts are that once you get through the door of a school, you are basically "in" the system. While we'll all have to sit for tests and apply and interview for residency spots, I just don't think it will carry the same level of anxiety and wonder. I hope anyway. What do you guys think? I'll be happy to put the "pre-med" years behind me.

You wish!!!
From what I understand, the anxiety and stress surrounding the residency issue is insane.

So yes it will be nice to be done with the whole pre-med anxiety, but we are all about to enter a whole new world of stress and anxiety.

Dammit... help me out here. =) Well, at least its different stress! Four years away too!

Warbler, I apologize if I have asked you before, but I cant recall if you have been accepted elsewhere or if you are on a few waitlists but have no outright acceptances. Also, am I correct you are on the High-Waitlist?

I always feel guilty when I complain on this thread since I was accepted to a few schools and have a deposit down at AZCOM. I know that I am in a very fortunate position and I really do feel for those who have everything riding on this waitlist.

I have two waitlist offers going right now. TUCOM and MSUCOM. TUCOM is far and wide my top choice. There is a lot riding on movement off the list. I am on the high-alternate list, so that is good... Just trying to be patient and hopeful. I'm hoping for good news for everyone!

I checked my email 300,000 times today. Very anticlimactic...

Whelp, the email came. Mine didn't have any specific info whatsoever, did anyone's elses? (actually, they did say that they began pulling from the high alternate list last week, but that they couldn't say my position on that list)...

Yep, just got the email myself.

So....we have all been waiting on the edges of our seats for an email that tells us the following:

1-We are on the waitlist
2- We could be pulled from that waitlist at anytime.

How is this an "update"? It's nothing more than providing us with a definition of a waitlist. Grrrrrr..... SO FRUSTRATING!

Mine ends with, "consider the consequences of rejecting an unconditional accept from another medical school".

I wonder why yours says pharmacy.

Anyway, another thing that confuses me is that they state they began pulling people from the high-waitlist last week.
If that is the case, I would really have thought that people who were pulled from the waitlist would post in this thread. Now I know that not everyone that is on the waitlist posts on SDN, but there certainly is a large percentage that do, and if they were pulling people last week, I would think at least one person would have come on here and posted.

I think we are all feeling a bit frustrated right now. It seemed like they were delaying sending out this email for some reason and so we expected their might be some specific information and instead we received this vague, form letter.

Mine says Pharmacy, and then I have another one that says Medical...so I think they sent out the wrong one originally and sent out the right one.

I certainly don't feel any better about this process after that email... But, whatcha gonna do? I guess just keep the fingers crossed?

I would think someone would post on SDN too, but considering there is only 4 of us posting right now, maybe not?

Sorry I haven't posted till now but I am in the same boat -- high waitlist.
Also, I recieved 2 emails first one says pharmacy and second one says medical.

Thanks for joining the thread! Hopefully all of us together can bring some clarity to this process...

I am thinking that perhaps the adcom picked the first round of names, but not necessarily that the letters/emails have gone out. I would think at this point they know
1.)how many spots available
2.)the number of candidates they CAN accept.

So maybe they started making their list, but it doesn't mean that they have sent out 30 or 40 or 50 letters (I am throwing out random figures of the number of spots). They could be doing it more slowly then we all think and its possible there "list" right now only has 5 names (as opposed to the larger number of spots available). I would think their review process of ALL the people on the waitlist would be long and teadius. And maybe they are handpicking and sending out acceptances one at a time.

Hmm, that's a good point. They may also be weeding out the healthiest among us by trying to cause a stress-induced heart attack and picking whoever is left. I know I'm getting close :/

LMAO! 🙂 I like the way you think!:scared:

my letter ended with "unconditional accept from another pharmacy school."

I got two emails. Both exactly the same, except one said "pharmacy school" the other said "medical school" The email was very disappointing. Basically it said they have started pulling from the list, and we haven't been chosen yet. Ouch...

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Was the subject of your email "TUCOM Waitlist Update #1(A)"?

I wonder if there are different groups (A,B,C, etc.)...

Haha - I was wondering that too! If "1A" is really their way of marking priorities on their list, it's not too stealth...but why else would they put both a '1' and an "A"?

Yeah, that was mine exactly. Maybe A means high list? Maybe the email didn't give us anything to go on so we're all over thinking it! :d

Hi all! I too have been watching this thread for a while and haven't posted until now. I am also on the high wait list and received the #1(A) email.

I was very surprised to hear people have already been pulled from the high alternate list. It is hard for me to believe this. I feel as though someone would have posted saying they had gotten in!

I emailed Dr. Haight asking if he could tell me how many people were on the high wait list and I never received a response...this was last Thursday. I guess that means they won't tell us how many are on the list?

I hope someone gets pulled soon, so we can at least know it is happening! Good luck to everyone!

That's weird, Dr. Haight is usually really good about responding to emails... It seems they aren't going to tell us our place on the list so we really have nothing to gauge the timing on. Bummer.

I know. Dr. Haight is very good about responding to emails. That's why I figured they are unable to tell us how many are on the list. He probably figured the answers to my questions would be in the letter we received today. I guess they were...we won't be informed of anything except that we are on the high alternate list.

I understand Touro's policies, but wish we would know our ranking on the list. For some reason that would make me feel better.

Of course! Me too. It would give us some indication as to when we might expect to be pulled from the list. As far as I know I could be 4th on the list or 44th.

Has anyone heard roughly how many are usually on the high alternate list? I know it's impossible to gauge from year to year, but I'm wondering if last year there were 20, 40, 60...how has this info never leaked?!

The only things I remember hearing (I hope correctly) is
1.) half the class is from the waitlist (Dean Haight at the interview.. I think?

2.) they get through the high alternate list every year in years past. (receptionist at admissions office)

But, I don't want to put too much weight on either of those because they are general. The thing that gets me the most is how they can make a ranked list in january without having interviewed everyone. I mean why put someone on the high list at the very beginning of interviews? It just seems crazy... blah blah blah, I am regurgitating previous frustrations, sorry...

I am stil holding out hope that what they meant by, "already pulling people" is really just a term for them starting their list of top candidates and not necessarily that notifications have been sent out.
:idea:OR....
Do the masters students get put on the waitlist until they complete the program? Or are they accepted outright? B/c the post bac I did put everyone on the waitlist until the program was over... Maybe the people in the special masters program have been pulled and that is what they are referring to?

Either way, we are ALL reading too much into this.... sigh:scared:

Nope, Master program students do not get put on a wait list. We interview and got our acceptance already. The program finished on May 13th. So, nope, not us.

Maybe advance-MPH kids? Some of them got waitlisted. They don't seemed like they go on SDN that much, from what I can tell.

I can attest to having heard one of the admissions councilors tell me that they usually get through the high waitlist. I seem to remember Dr. Haight talking about WL's during the interview, but mainly he talked about how much he disliked them. He and I definitely agree on that!

I also agree, "begun pulling from the list" could mean they basically spent Thursday and Friday preparing their first wave of letters and haven't sent them out yet.

For the love of all things holy can anyone out there tell us how big the high waitlist has been in past years??

Well thanks for popping my bubble... LOL Thats great they dont waitlist you, cause I did that last year and it sucked (hence I am waiting to hear from Touro this app cycle)
