TUCOM CA Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey theone1979- I am still waiting to hear from TUCOM as well. I was placed on the high wait list after my Nov 29 interview. I've already sent in a few updates...I was told that we could expect to hear from TUCOM sometime in June up to the first day of class. When are you planning on moving to AZ?

Well good luck to us both then!

As far as moving to AZ, I'm actually not going to move until I find out about Touro. I live in NJ and if Touro accepts me off of the High-waitlist, I will move to Ca from where I am now (NJ). If Touro does not offer me a seat, then I will move to AZ and attend Midwestern.

However, I don't think I can wait indefinitely for Touro. Im really hoping they contact us sometime in June so that I have time to move and dont have to rush last minute. If I haven't been accepted to Touro by mid-July, I think I would have to call it quits and head off to Midwestern.

What about you?

EDIT: Also, I have been looking for data for the COMLEX and USMLE scores for Touro-Ca. Does anyone know where I can find this?

Well it looks like your coming to the West Coast either way 👍
Sounds like we are in similar situations. I was accepted to TUNCOM but would prefer TUCOM. I'm hoping I hear from TUCOM before July 1st 😕

When did you interview?

Hey guys,

I only have 1 LOR from sci prof and 1 from liberal.....and TUCOM requires 2 sci profs which i don't have....is there any way to get around this?

Yes....get another LOR from a sci prof...

Sorry, not trying to be a jerk, but they have these requirements for a reason.

However, most schools allow you to substitute a committee letter in place of the individual letters, so if you can do that Touro might accept it. Give them a call.

Still looking for the COMLEX/USMLE data for Touro-Ca if anyone can point me to it.

Thank you whyrms. I have actually heard the same thing from quite a few people...personally I only applied to programs that offered an MPH (i worked at the PH dept for a year and loved it) and want to have the option to be able to work in a PH setting at some point in my career. I feel like the MSMHS would give me a better chance to bridge to COM, but it would do little for my professional profile later, in terms of what I want to do. Basically, I want the MPH over MSMHS, but I want the DO more. I just don't want to "waste" more time in the AMPH program if chances of getting into COM after are slim, if that makes sense

Personally, I don't think you're "wasting" time in an MPH program as long as you're actually interested in the subject. The degree is useful, whereas the MSMHS is just there so you can increase your chances of getting into COM.

If you have more questions about the AMPH, PM me (I don't know much about the MSMHS though)

For those of us who are on the "High-Waitlist":

I was just looking through the Touro-Ca thread from last year and there is some good news...but also some somewhat frightening news.

I think someone earlier in this thread mentioned that last year people started getting pulled from the High-Waitlist on June 8th. Looking through the thread from last year that appears to be true. However, what is concerning is that there were people on the "High-Waitlist" that still hadn't heard anything as late as July17th!!!

I'm not sure if it will be the same this year, but I am a bit concerned that for even those on the High-Waitlist, it seems possible that we might not receive word until mid-July. Let's hope this is not the case.

And sorry to be asking yet AGAIN...but I would really like to find the COMLEX and USMLE data for Touro-Ca. Does anyone here know where I can find it???

Oh man... I so hope that's not the case! I know we all have been waiting so long this year. It would be nice for those of us awaiting acceptance to have a month's rest in knowing we are in... I know I would... Here's hoping early June is our time!

I hope to see you all pulled off the waitlist and in class this fall!

Thanks, and same to you!!

Have you been accepted elsewhere? I always feel a bit guilty complaining/stressing in this thread since I have a deposit down at AZCOM so if I I'm not offered a seat at Touro-Ca, I still am all set at AZCOM. I really feel for those that have no acceptances to fall back upon...I can't even imagine how nerve-wracking the waitlist would be in that case!

I have one other waitlist offer, but not as promising as TUCOM. Yeah, it's stressful! But, I'm happy to be on the high waitlist because it seems promising that I'll be in medical school by this fall.

I envy your acceptance! Congratulations! Hope you make it in to TUCOM because it sounds like you want it more than AZCOM.

hi everyone! my boyfriend and i will be moving out of our apartment (<3mi from campus) at the end of june and historically, touro students have lived in the building so our landlords asked if i could advertise it to incoming students.

it's an upper unit 2b/1ba (~700sq ft) in a 4-unit building (418 Wilson Ave) it's on the river walk which has a great path for running, walking, etc. it comes with a washer and dryer in unit and the internet is paid for. it's about a 15-20min bike ride to campus. street parking only. it's a safe area and i lived here for both my first and second year, but have to leave for rotations. our rent was $1080. it's a great place because there's plenty of room to share it with someone, it's close to the island and you won't be as secluded from some of the necessities (grocery stores, gas stations, etc) if you were living on the island.

if you're interested, please call jessica buurma at sierra property services at (707)265-6556 and feel free to message me if you have questions.

good luck to those who are still waiting for good news and congrats to those who've been accepted. i hope my comments throughout the post have been beneficial!

I was told that waitlisters would be getting an email from Dr. Haight around the end of May regarding the list ranking. Has anyone gotten this email, or heard anything?

nothing yet...pretty sure we'll be hearing something really soon though

So we will find out where we rank within each of the subtypes of waitlist category? For instance, I know that I am on the High-Waitlist, but you are saying that I will be notified and told how far up (or down) I am within the High-Waitlist?

My understanding is that they won't tell you where you are ranked, but will just contact you when you're moved off the list... Hopefully the high waitlist gets moved first and then the medium and so on... But someone posted a little bit ago that there were still high-waitlisters that hadn't heard by mid-July. Then again, someone last year heard as early as June 8th... Let's hope for the latter.

Well I would have to assume that High-Waitlist will be offered seats first, then medium and so on....otherwise what is the point of ranking the waitlist?

And yes, that was me who commented as to when people were being notified last year. I looked through last year's thread and was encouraged to see people on the high-waitlist began to be notified as early as June 8th....but then i was discouraged to see people on the high waitlist still stating that they had not heard anything as late as mid-July.

Hopefully we will be updated soon. Good luck everyone!!

And I have to ask again...does ANYONE know where the COMLEX/USMLE data is for Touro-Ca. This info is readily available for most schools but I cant seem to find it for Touro-Ca.

I was sort of wondering if the people that were left waiting last year had filled updates or letters of intent? The most frustrating part about last years post is that know one really knows what happens to those people. I looked at some of their other posts and it looks like they ended up at different schools/reapplying.

I too am anxiously waiting. My husband just got a job in Napa about a month ago and is commuting from Sacramento where we live. I have been accepted at LECOM, but would do just about anything to go to Touro instead. The hardest part is that school starts in Pa in mid July, so I don't have a lot of time to make this big move (but I will wait as long as I physically can). Fingers are crossed! And I am hoping we all hear sooner rather then later.

As to the Comlex/USMLE data...I don't believe I ever saw it. I know I found the match list but that is about it. I would email the Dean and ask him. He seems very nice and I am sure he would give you a link or direct you where to go for this.

Good Luck to everyone!!! :luck::xf:

I heard from somewhere that Touro gives preferential to candidates that are near the area when it comes time to scramble at the end when someone drops out unexpectedly. I know it doesn't help your case, but email Dr. Haight anyway and tell him your situation and see if that get you anywhere.

That would make sense, but personally I hope we all get pulled of the list well before any scrambling begins!

yup i wouldn't want any scrambling for all of us poor faraway residents...lets hope all of the people who really want to attend touro get in this year!

I was just accepted to the Masters program at Touro CA. I'll be joining you all come August.

I had a lot of questions, namely: is anyone living in SF right now and taking the ferry to commute? How is this as far as options go? seems like it would be nice to not have to drive and just relax on the ferry and study in the morning (I like to wake up early and study) with a good view on the way to school.

also anyone cycle to campus? How does this work with crossing the bridge?

Basically where is everyone living who isn't living in Vallejo or on the Island?

Ah, you have the same questions as me! The ferry is a great ride. It lasts about an hour and it's a nice way to rest and study. I haven't found any reduced rate for commuters, though... so it's kind of an expensive option (especially if you tack that onto the rent in SF!) If anyone finds anything different, let me know!

As far as cycling goes, I have found neighborhood routes from Benicia and Vallejo to campus that don't seem too bad. I had mapped out riding from farther locations like Napa or even Sonoma, but your looking at 20+ miles and having to ride on Hwy 37 and 29. The best ride is probably from Vallejo heights to campus. Anyone know more?

Sounds like most people live in Benicia, Fairfield, Vallejo or Berkeley area.

I was from the MSMHS program. There are a few people who lives in Benicia, which is nicer than Vallejo, and one who lives in Fairfield. They all travel by cars. Only a few people in school live far away, as commute cost a lot of money and time.
Crossing which bridge? the bridge across the bay? from Berkeley to Benicia? that bridge is free to cross for pedestrian and bikes, but that's like 1 hour of biking everyday (one way), and through pretty tough neighborhood, and if you're going home at night...uhhh I wouldn't recommend it...
But the blue bridge that leads to Mare Island? A lot of student cross it everyday, it has its own side walk that's pretty wide for pedestrian and bikes. I have a friend who lives just across the bridge that bikes to school. He also is looking for an apartment mate to share his 2 bedroom apartment with for 540 a month (utility included).

I would recommend staying near the school for the MSMHS program and get use to the school first. Don't want to let commuting get in the way of this year, cause it'll determine whether or not you'll get into the COM program. After you get in, then you'll have plenty of times to experiments.

Best of luck! and Congrats!

I don't know many people who lived in SF that commuted via ferry. Most of them carpooled or drove in themselves.

A couple of my classmates cycled from Benicia. I live/d on Wilson and biked to school when the weather was nice and when I didn't have a ton of books with me. Crossing the bridge isn't a big deal and it wasn't very often that I caught it while a boat was going under (I think once, in the 2 years it happened to me).

For those of us on the waitlist, I just thought I would share some info I got from a phone conversation with the admission's office.

I was told that we should be getting an email from Dr. Haight the middle of this coming week which should let us know where we stand in terms of the waitlist.

Also, I mentioned on the phone that I saw from last year's thread that people were pulled off the waitlist starting on June 8th and asked if they expected to do the same this year. I was told that they thought people would not be pulled off as early this year......great.

Also, I was curious to know the stats of those of us on the waitlist. I imagine some people may not want to share but if you are willing, feel free to post those stats here.

I am on the High-Waitlist
3.6 cumm
3.85 science
27Q Mcat

No Stats!! =) I've been pining over those numbers for way too long. Let's assume all of us on the high alternate list have good enough numbers to be accepted and hope that we are all classmates come August!! :xf: It'll feel really good to put those numbers to rest!

Thanks for the update! I have been wanting to call them, so thank you for doing that for all of us! As far as stats go, I would have to agree that we are probably beyond that right now. Personally I am am 27 years old, and a non-trad applicant that just finished a post bac masters in May 2010 at EVMS. I've got tons of shadowing/research experience, blah blah blah... I have a feeling we are all in the same boat so don't stress about stats. They have notes that they like us a little or they like us a lot. I think its all just a waiting game. Good luck to everyone though! I think I recall them telling us that over half the class is from the waitlist (which should be about 70 ppl or so). So hang in there! :xf:

No kidding? Half the class?? Well, now that just brings a smile to my face! It is a waiting game for sure. That being said, I'm hoping for at least a little time where I can rest and know I'll be starting in August. Has anyone seen an updated academic calendar online? The website is pretty sparse.

Well....Today is Wednesday, which is technically the middle of the week which was when I was told we should receive an email from Dr. Haight telling us where we are on the waitlists.

I am truly hoping that comes today, though I suppose it may not come until tomorrow or even later.

It is encouraging to hear that last year so many people were taken from the waitlist.

Does anyone have ANY idea how many of us are on the High-Waitlist? The reason I ask is this:

If in a typical year they take 40 or so people from the waitlist, and there are only 20 (for example) of us on the High-Waitlist, then it would seem that we are in darn good shape. If however there are 80 of us on the High-Waitlist...well that is a bit more concerning. So does anyone have a clue how many of us are on the High-Waitlist?

Good luck to all!!

Man... we all think too much. I hadn't considered that possibility. But, if they take 50-70 students off the WL, then there wouldn't be much point of having a "high" list if there were going to be 80 of us on it. Then you could just call it a...waitlist. So, I'm hoping that is the case and there is a small number of us on the high list. I hope...

No sign of an email here either... I figure maybe another hour if he's working late. Admissions must have some sense that we are all waiting on baited breath to see where we'll be for the next four years!

I guess I could be wrong, but I thought that is what they said... A really good friend of my is a 3rd year there, so she may have been the one who told me that. My interview was in January and to be perfectly honest, I didn't think I would be put on a waitlist just from the way Dean Haight explained how many spots were available and the way the adcom worked. I thought it would be a YES or a NO. So, maybe I wasn't paying enough attention. The thing that really confuses me is how they put people on the waitlist all interview season long in 3 different tiers and don't take them off until the end. I mean, is there an initial quota on how many people they put on the list, or do they just keep adding to their hearts content? And how are they pulling us off if they didn't put us all on it at the same time? I mean, they have to "rank" us outside of the tiers...so why not give us a number?

From what I gather, they do rank us they just don't tell us that ranking. I think the ranking process involves extra letters, extra activities, etc. Which is pretty frustrating because you have to do all this extra work in addition to the work you did just to get there.

I agree with you about waiting to pull people from the list. Other schools admit people during the interview cycle. It's like they're saying "we like you, but we're waiting to see if we like someone else better, then we'll let you know."

I remain hopeful.

Spoke with Dean Haight today. He said that the first of regular monthly updates will go out tomorrow or early next week

I emailed him as well (he must be getting sick of us badgering him) and he also told me "The first of regular monthly updates should be going out tomorrow or early next week".

However he also stated that these emails will not contain any specific information regarding any applicants chances....so Im not really sure what information this email will give us. I am REALLY hoping the email will let us know when they expect to begin pulling people from the waitlist.

I had assumed that this email will tell us where we stand within the waitlists, but from his response, it sounds more like it will just be a mass email with general information. I guess we will just have to wait and see...easier said than done.

EDIT:
On a totally unrelated note, does anyone recall if Touro-Ca had a gym/fitness center on campus, and if so, what was it like? I dont remember seeing one the tour, but that was awhile ago.

They do have a fitness room. From what I remember it was a 20x30 room with some free weights and other workout equipment. Nothing spectacular, but at least they have something.

It's small, but you have everything you need; 2 treadmills, couple of step machines, and a couple of stationary bikes, and a bunch of weights and machines. Not a lot of people uses the gym, there's a peak hour, but most of the time the students schedule their time so that not everyone is cram in the room at the same time.

"early next week" probably means wed/thur for them. Things are taking soooooo long!

Agonizing! So we're waiting on an email that doesn't have any specific information?

Hey, for all you waitlisters, particularly those not holding on to an acceptance, how are you preparing your financial aid? I would love to be applying to scholarships and aid programs, but most require that you at least have a letter of acceptance in hand. I'm also curious about how arranging fin aid for TUCOM will go being so close to the start of the semester. Any insight? Thanks!

You should file the Fasfa if you haven't already and have some credit cards available, because the refund check will probably be late, meaning you will have to pay out of pocket for supplies and such until finaid gets your big check in hand. As far as scholarships, I suppose you could fill out everything and wait until you get your letter, or use a copy of your waitlist letter... ? I don't know, that is a bit of a quandry...

"early next week" probably means wed/thur for them. Things are taking soooooo long!

I would think at this point they would at least know how many spots they have. Unless they are waiting for the May acceptances to accept or decline. They give 2 weeks (I think) to decided...so if the adcom took 1-2 weeks to decide and they then give the candidates 2 weeks to accept we are looking at June 14th or 21st as the date Touro should know how many spots they have available. This could be the hold up... And maybe the Deans letter will confer how many spots they have, or a general idea of how this application cycle has gone (more spots then normal, or less spots then normal). Regardless I don't think anyone is getting an acceptance until AFTER the deans letter is sent.

IS IT a letter or an EMAIL?

Also...what is the point of "regular monthly emails" when we only have 2 months left? I mean, by the time this goes out it will be the middle of June, and then what, another one in July?

FAFSA is all taken care of. I guess --once again-- I have to wait. Wait Wait Wait. I'm prepared to pay pretty heavily out of pocket at the get go if needs be.

Dr. Haight said the update will be an email. The acceptance offer will come either by phone or email. I agree the "monthly updates" are a little weird given the time frame. But then, worst case scenario some of the waitlisters might not be pulled until the first week of classes in August!

I get the sense that the AD COM met a week after the last day of interviews. June 14th might actually be a little early based on that. I hate to say it... But really, I have no idea. I'm anxiously speculating!

The last day of interviews was 5/23. AD COM probably met on 5/25 to review those that interviewed third and fourth weeks of may, and if that's the case then the last day for people to make deposits would be 2 weeks from 5/25 (which was yesterday).

I wonder if they've started ranking the wait list yet. It seems like that would take a while.

Oh good! Well, they should know by now how many seats they have to offer. I assume now they just rank the waitlists, which I hope begins with the high waitlist and start offering spots. I hope they offer them as they determine rank and don't make us high on the list wait until the whole thing is ranked. I guess we'll find out whenever DH sends out the information email.

Hi guys!

First of all Good luck to everyone in the waitlist!
I'm myself in the Touro-NV mid-waitlist so I'm not expecting to get in at all.. but I got accepted into the TUCOM MSMHS program and was wondering if there is a thread about how successful the program has been so far since it is a new program. Do you guys know anyone who went through it? Thanks

For those on the high waitlist...have you all sent in a letter of intent/extra info to Touro post-interview? I procrastinated way to long on sending in a LOI and I'm totally kicking myself...has anyone heard how much weight is put on this?
...PS while I don't wish this kind of stress on anyone, it's comforting to know I'm not the only one obsessing over news from Touro...goodluck everyone!!

Oh, I had another thought...does anyone know if the class size is staying at 135 again this year? I stalked the Touro c/o 2015 facebook page and there are already 109 members...(mini freakout)...
and for anyone whose spoken w/ Dr. Haight recently, did he mention whether or not we'll be told how many are on the high waitlist?

Congrats!
Out of the 10 people in the MSMHS program who applied for an interview for TUCOM-CA, all 10 of them got into the COM program. If you try your best, you'll be accepted. So, perform well.
