TUCOM CA Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
haha you must be tired after all that driving! SF was awesome! We went to Union Square when they were stringing up the lights on the giant Christmas tree. The smell of evergreen put me in the Holiday spirit. San Francisco is my 2nd home. 🙂 Too bad you couldn't come out with us, but I'm glad you got to be a good respectful son. haha 😉

If we both end up at Touro, we can all plan another SF trip right before classes start 🙂

Well tomorrow is the big day for those of us that interviewed this past 2 week cycle. I am sooooooooooo anxious. I really loved the school.

For those that already received decisions, do you guys recall around what time (Eastern Time), the emails went out on the Friday. If they send them out first thing in the morning (9 AM their time), that means I should expect an email around noon eastern time. However if they wait til the end of their day to send them out, I wouldn't get the email until the evening.

So does anyone recall around what time the emails went out? THanks.

My decision email came around 11:30 am PST, so that would be around 2:30 pm Eastern Time.

I received my acceptance at 0943 PST with the title "Decision on your TUCOM interview-2015

So sounds like in previous cycles, the calls came in early to mid afternoon EST. Ugggggg..... I hate the waiting.

Good luck everyone.

got my results! i'm thankful it's not a full out rejection, but it's not great either - waitlist 🙁

Just got an acceptance email from Dr. Haight. I am so happy right now!! Interviewed on Monday 11/15, and really enjoyed the school and the people.

Good luck to everyone.

congratulations to you guys! i got put on the low waitlist so i most likely won't be apart of the class ... but who knows? regardless, i was honestly surprised they even gave me an interview (look at my stats!). anyway, good luck and congratulations again!! 👍

At least you have RVU 😉

Now that I'm accepted and may attend this school, I want to bring up a couple things that bothered me to see if I'm justified in my beliefs.

First, when the dean was asked to specifically list the names of hospitals in the Bay Area that Touro students rotate through, he kind of went around the answer instead of being direct. He named a couple, and then went off on a long tangent which can basically be summarized as "we have plenty".

Second, when attempting to justify Touro's average board pass rate (which did not require any justification), the dean said that Touro is eight years ahead of the boards, and when the boards catch up to Touro students their scores will improve. 🙄 I'm sure if I said I'm 8 years ahead of the MCAT and that I actually deserve a much higher score, they would have kicked me out instantly.

Overall, I like the school and want to attend, I'm just worried about the quality of their rotations. Would anybody like to add their input?

Oh, and I meant to ask this during the interview, but I forgot. Does anybody know how Touro preps their students for the COMLEX? I know most schools offer a "free" Kaplan course.

What about you???

I haven't heard anything yet, but I am checking my e-mail compulsively haha! I kind of wish I didn't know that decisions were going out today. I'm trying to prepare for another interview right now and it's hard to focus! I'm glad to hear you got in. I thought you interviewed well.

Just found the response in my junkmail...
" I am pleased to advise you that the Admissions and Standards Committee met earlier this week and determined that you should be placed on the High wait-list"

I am pretty heartbroken. This school was far and away my top choice and I thought my interview went amazingly well, my stats are quite competitive for the school...I just have no idea why I ended up being waitlisted.

Does anyone know the likelihood that someone on the "high waitlist" will actually end up getting accepted this cycle? Do they usually dip into their high waitlist candidates?

Thanks. And congrats to everyone on their acceptances.

hahaha I'm sure you got in! It's probably just taking Dr. Haight some time to write everybody an email.

Good luck at COMP 👍

From past Touro threads, the waitlist appears to move a decent amount, and many of the people that were on the high-waitlist got accepted later on.

Well at least it's good to know that the waitlist seems to move and many high-waitlister get accepted later.
I don't know much about the whole waitlist thing- Im assuming that if you are on the waitlist, if you are offered a seat it won't be until the end of the cycle (Aprilish?) is that correct?

I can't express how envious I am of those of you who were accepted. I fell in love with Touro and it was my absolute top choice.

I have no idea why I was waitlisted. I don't want to sound arrogant, but I thought my interview went about as good as any interview could go.
My stats are
cumm 3.56
Science 3.76
27Q MCAT

I know those aren't AMAZING stats, but they are certainly competitive for this school. I let the school know they are my top choice and provided them with updated stats in terms of my grades for this semester (all A's).

I just don't know went wrong, and I feel absolutely destroyed.

Again...congrats to those who were accepted.. I just wish I was included.

Edit: For those that were accepted, would you mind sharing your stats. THanks

I know it's easy to say this from my point of view, but seriously, try not to worry. Your chances of getting off the waitlist are pretty good IMO. Just stay in touch with Lynn Huckle, the admissions counselor, and update her with whatever new information you have. Write a letter of intent, and let them know how much you want to attend that school. Don't give up.

As for my stats, they're in my MDapps link

👍 Agreed. Stay positive, rock your other interviews and you'll surely get in somewhere. Your stats are certainly more than adequate. Didn't Dr. Haight say something about an FAQ that had "advice to move off the waitlist" or something to that effect? I agree that keeping them informed about ongoing coursework and interest would be important.

Sorry, forgot to add my stats 3.19 cGPA / 3.36 sGPA / 32 S MCAT (10/10/12) with one retake. Not the most balanced application, but I do have pretty good ECs and research. Thought the interview went ok, not great / not badly.

Congrats to all of you who have interviewed and welcome to those that have been accepted!

Even though, once my coworkers found out that I started a Facebook page for our class, I was made fun of for days, I thought it was time to repost the fact that I did, indeed, try and start a facebook page.

Just search for, whilst on facebook itself: Touro-COM-CA Class of 2015

Now that the winter is in full force here in Colorado, it has been impressed upon me with renewed fervor that the time is rapidly approaching for medical school. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join that facebook page -- I look forward to eventually getting to know you y'all whether it be sooner or later.

And, just for those who have recently been placed on a waitlist and are new to this particular forum, I am a living example of a waitlist survivor. Where there is a will there is a way.

I am confused. You say that you are a "waitlist survivor". Are you saying that you were put on the waitlist and have already been taken off the list and been offered a seat? It was my understanding that those on the waitlist are not offered seats until the end of the cycle.

he's from the previous cycle and received early acceptance this cycle 🙂

If it's helpful at all, please read my post regarding rotations at http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=774824

Also, regarding boards prep, currently students choose which boards prep course from private companies. The curriculum committee at TUCOM-CA is very receptive and have made changes in response to student input. Although the school does not currently offer free courses like others do, that doesn't mean that in the future, this could change. We have also been told that we will have access to COMSAE (when the time comes for us to use it).

Anyone else hear from Touro this Friday? From the previous posts it sounds like there were a bunch of acceptances and 2 waitlisted so far.

good luck to everyone who recently interviewed and anyone who has an interview coming up!

for those of you who have your interviews soon, don't worry or be nervous at all. just be yourself! the interviewers genuinely just want to get to know you better. the dean of admissions is very friendly and guides you through the day. i think everyone there wants you to do well so don't allow yourself to get stressed out and just have fun! =]

Mikey- I see you have been accepted to several schools. What are you top choices? Are you holding out for any school in particular?
Congrats!

Hey mmikey! Thanks for the post on the match list. You got accepted into some great schools so far. Would you mind telling me what really stood out from your interview / visit? I have my interview in the beginning of dec. and I'm debating the cost of traveling from the east coast to there, though I'd love to check out the school. Thanks.

The 2010 match list is posted online

Hi you guys!

For those that accepted, I'm currently looking into a house to get/rent. It's in a safe place, 4 bedroom. Would anyone be interested in renting with me? Male, 23, middle-eastern. Quiet and somewhat introverted, but sometimes likes to smoke hookah. There's also one girl who's also interested. I'd prefer females for cleanliness but open to all. Let me know what you guys think.
😀

Thank you! TUCOM CA, DMU, KCUMB were my top choices. I have decided to attend TUCOM CA 🙂

Does anyone know it Touro rejects pre-interview (post-secondary) or are they going to wait until the end of the cycle and "keep reviewing" files?

Hey! I'm getting a little frustrated with the admissions and letters I've been receiving....if someone feels the same, please share...

So I did receive that letter that my application is still awaiting review & i thought that was there nice way of saying that we were placed on a waitlist for an interview...so, I asked them what exactly that meant and they did say that it hadn't gone to committee yet....it's been like this for a month now so I'm wondering why there hasn't been movement. I did call again and they did say my status was still the same....

Anyone else experiencing this?

Okay so I just got this email:

Dear Applicant:

I want to express my appreciation for you remaining patient with us as we move through the interview cycle for candidates applying to begin August 2011. I know you have little interest in excuses, but this year we are already on track to exceed the record number of applications that we received last year. The Committee continues to review interview-eligible candidates to determine who among them should be invited to interview. What you may not know is that the interview process doesn't swing into overdrive until after Winter Break – in early January. Interviewing is a very time consuming process and we are only about a quarter of the way through the process at this time and we have a long way to go. Please stay patient as I remain hopeful that you will be invited to interview.

What point are they trying to make with this email just that getting an interview may take a while? Are they apologizing for the slow process? Or is this a negative email? I mean I was only complete 2 weeks ago so I'm not expecting any miracles in receiving a quick interview I'm just wondering what the purpose of the email is.

Not negative by any means. Don't worry. I guarantee they sent this in bulk to every applicant who 1) has a complete secondary 2) hasn't already been offered an interview, and 3) hasn't already been accepted / rejected. Which is likely a few hundred people. The Admissions Director stressed to us during interview that "Phase I" of the process goes well past winter break -- meaning that if you are offered an interview during this period you have a high likelihood of being accepted. Phase 2 starts sometime in spring, and if there is a Phase 3... well, you don't want to know about that!

I received that email yesterday and an interview invite email right after that.

And I as well! YAY Interview!!

Does anyone know when TUCOM CA's Phase 2 interview cycle begin?
