TUCOM CA Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This link is not active. To what are you referring?

I was referring to the Touro University Village Center they were planning on building: "Touro proposes a university village with classrooms, student housing and businesses like bookstores and coffee shops. Plans also include a research center for such companies as biotech firms, and a community and cultural center showcasing Vallejo's diverse population." There is a lot of ongoing construction on Mare Island recently, so I was wondering if that was what they are working on.

That's strange. The link worked a few weeks ago, but yes, it's not active for some reason. If that's what they're planning, it'd be really nice.

I have an answer. The answer is "Medium Alternate"

I genuinely want to attend this school.

Could any of you explain what the following FAQ means?

Can someone recieve the offer of a seat and accept on my behalf?

I estimate that this rarely results in a person from the alternate list being accepted in place of someone that has already been accepted (and declined the offer). However, there's always the chance that someone might read this posting and contact someone from the alternate list.

I'm still trying to understand this whole process.

I believe this means can a designated party receive the acceptance offer (a physical object: letter, phonecall, email) and notify the school of the agreement that the applicant does accept--an acceptance for you; say for instance you are out of country, etc, and don't want to give up the seat if you are selected from the waitlist. I do not believe someone getting an acceptance then designating another person to matriculate en lieu of you. That's what I pulled from your Q.

Ha, that would be hilarious. The idea that some stellar applicant could be accepted but then "gift" their acceptance to some unqualified mouth-breather in their place.....yea I didn't think that sounded right.

In other news, I am interviewing at Touro-CA this Monday (Nov. 8th). Anyone else interviewing on that day?

For those that have already interviewed, what were your thoughts regarding the school and the interview process? Also does anyone know what percentage of those interviewed are accepted? Thanks.

I thought the school was pretty fantastic personally, especially if you want to do any research. I know the barracks motif did not sit well with some people but Mare Island was pretty nice and you really can't beat the weather. Know your own file very well prior to going in and know why you want to be a doc and a DO and you will be fine. As far as percentage accepted the deal is that if you are invited to interview you have a decent shot at an acceptance. It's still pretty early in the cycle so I would guess they are still accepting a large portion of each group.

Is it too late to apply here?? I wasnt origionally going to apply here, but now I kind of regret not doing it. I submitted my initial AACOMAS application to 5 schools, but now want to add Touro CA..is it worth it applying this late?? 😕

Thanks!

So if your not accepted that makes you an unquilified mouth-breather. I hope you get accepted because you set some pretty rough standards for people; either your accepted, or your an unqualified mouth-breather.

Good luck with your interview. Let us know how it goes 🙂

Ha! Well I didn't mean to suggest that, I was just making a point using an extreme case. I was saying that obviously it would be an absurd policy if an accepted applicant was able to hand over their acceptance to anyone, regardless of how unqualified they were (and I just like the term "mouth-breather").

Thanks for the good luck wishes. From what I've read the Touro-CA interview can be a bit intense, so I just need to be prepared.

For those that have interviewed, how many applicants are in the group interview, and who actually conducts the interview (are there several faculty members, students etc)?

Also, if anyone can recall any of the questions asked, that would be great. Thanks

Each interview has about 6 students in the room interviewed by 3 people (1 basic science professor, 1 other faculty, and 1 current student). Some of the questions are basic (why doctor, why DO, etc.) but most are very specific to your application.

Still apply. I didn't get my completed app in until march, interviewed in April, waitlisted, and then offered early acceptance for this year. There were others in my interview group offered seats, so anything can happen. (i'm also a local, and they said that helps since you can move up without much trouble)

congratulations on all your acceptances! that's quite an accomplishment! =]

tucom-ca is my first choice and i'm interviewing there on nov 23rd. i was wondering if you could tell me what your stats were. i'm trying to figure out if i stand a chance.

Congrats to all of you that have been accepted 👍

Anyone else interviewing on the 16th?

Got accepted to this school, even though it is in CA and close to san francisco, I am still not quite sure about the school itself...

I know TUCOM-CA has a strong match list in the past year, but the school environment itself is a little questionable...during the school tour, I went to see the anatomy lab and OMM lab, well...not as steller as other schools that I've interviewed at...especially the entire campus seems a little old and not well-maintained...I think the most serious drawback of Touro is its school environment..

also, the deposit is $2000!! and it is due within two weeks of the acceptance notice!! they really don't want us to have a choice, they want our money now and lock us in perhaps? hmm....😕

I have an interview scheduled in a few weeks. I have the same concerns that you mentioned though, and I'm doubting if the price of a flight from the east cost is worth it to attend the interview.

By environment, do just mean facilities, or other aspects too (students, faculty, campus feel, etc.)? Also, did they mention much about their rotations? I've been wondering about that.

Thanks!

It all depends on what your idea of a school is? Some people are totally off-put about TUCOM-NY looking like just another building in an extremely dense metropolis, others love it. Does brick and mortar matter in your path to become a doctor? I would suggest, if anyone has qualms with their clinical education, why not speak to their dean of clinical education instead of neurotic pre-meds? I did and it was extremely helpful, I'd post the dean's responses on him but I don't have his permission so I implore you to contact on your own.

In regards to their anatomy lab, sure they don't have a flat screen and computer at every location; but is that what you really need? Did doctors twenty years ago gripe at lack of slide projectors in every room? Has there been anything to prove that this makes you better doctor? From what I recall one has access to the cadaver lab nearly 24/7, except for Friday night (in observance of a Hebrew practice). I loved the fact that you work on the cadavers for both years, and you get two fresh cadavers throughout your studies. Plus, air circulation is great in there (it smells like a clean dentist office).

I loved the feel of student culture on the campus, I felt it was more alive and vibrant than most of the schools at which I have interviewed. Also, you have to like the area for your own reasons--there are plenty of people out there who think Vallejo is complete trash, or that Oakland is only filled with gang-bangers. To each, their own.

I just canceled my Tuesday Nov. 9th interview at Touro CA. I know it is late notice but it took me a couple of days to decide.

I hope someone can take the opportunity and snag the slot. I think the program would be really great, it's just not a good fit for me.

I just canceled my 11/9 interview as well - I hope someone can come in for an earlier date. Flights were actually about the same price today as they were in Sept. when I booked the flight.

It was a difficult decision, but I just couldn't justify the money and time off of work/ school to attend the interview with a low likelihood of actually attending if I was accepted. The thought of moving back to CA and the research focus of TUCOM was a pretty strong motivator though... ah well.

Good luck guys!

Just joined the forums. But interviewed 11/2 (Tuesday) and got an acceptance on 11/5 (Friday).

My review of the place:
Before I start, I'll let you know that I'm a mid-20's male having lived in LA my whole life. Now on to the review:

Note: If this is too long just scroll to the bottom

It was a really friendly school. I showed up two days ahead to check out the city and school for myself before the interview.

On Sunday (10/31) I left LA and drove to Vallejo. I got there around 1:00pm to the Courtyard Marriot (CM) and then left to go around town. The place around CM was fairly pleasant but the surrounding areas were kind of sketchy. I went to a shopping center near by where there was a Target, CVS, GNC, Taco Bell, etc... Vibe from there was ok (not good, not bad, but ok). Later on in the evening I went to a local 24 hour fitness to workout - BAD PLACE!!!! It looked like I was going to be mugged in that area, or get my car stolen. The gym itself was run-down. I guess they have one that's a lot better about 15 minutes away. That pretty much sums up Sunday.

On Monday (11/1) I went to go visit the school. I immediately went to the library and approached a second year (Person Y) who gave me lots of advice of what to see and what the school was like. Upon going around to meet some of the faculty I came across a first year (Person X). X took me around to meet some people and spent a good half hour of her day showing me around. Note that the week I went, everyone was studying for a test they had, so the vibe I got was that the students are super friendly. Everyone I met that day was telling me to be more laid back about the interview, be myself, and be as honest as possible; they've already gone though your app extensively before you came for the interview, and now they just want to see your character. After my visit, I went to eat, and prep for the next day (get my clothes ready, shave, etc...). Later on that evening Person Y joined me for a brief dinner (about an hour long) to give me further information and help ease me for the interview.

Tuesday (11/2) The Interview: The day started out well. It was sunny and at about 9:00am we met Dr. Haight. He was such a nice person. The people I interviewed with (the potential candidates) were outstanding and friendly as well. All seemed to have a good head on their shoulders and look like people you could build life-long friendships with. As for the interview day, after a session about the MPH program, Financial Aid, and student tour, we were broken down to two groups of 5 for the interview. The panel (1 basic science professor, 1 d.o. professor, and 1 student doctor) asked us each separate questions pertaining to our application and us specifically. I made sure to pay attention to what everyone had to say, keep eye contact, and smile. 😀
I came out thinking I did horrible -- so much so that I caught a cold right afterwards and was stressing until Friday.

Pros 👍: Friendly staff, super friendly students, Mare Island is good

Cons 👎 Vallejo feels sketchy

Potential Pros/Cons: Some people (dis)like the Island's history and the cozy feel of the school

Any more questions PM me

Edit: Oh btw, I had negative ideas about the school before going there based on what I've read others say about it but it went from somewhere low on my list to my #1 place.

That's AMAZING! How did you get your acceptance so fast? They told us they use USPS exclusively for notifications! They must have had your acceptance letter printed and mailed while you were interviewing. 😕

Congrats!

EDIT: They did say they would notify you by email; however, I emailed them and requested an email notification and I still had to wait for the snail mail.

Well, the admissions committee was coming to make their choices that Thursday for the previous 2 weeks, so I just lucked out that I only had to wait two days for them to make a decision.

Who'd you e-mail? I got the USPS letter yesterday (11/8) but got an e-mail on 11/5 from Dr. Haight after I requested e-mail notification.

BTW Thanks for the congrats!!! Now to come up w/ the money

FOR THOSE LOOKING TO SAVE MONEY ON THE HOTEL:

I stayed at the Courtyard Marriot for $65 per night as opposed to the $130ish that they advertise. The night before I left I went to priceline for the 'name your own price.' I chose the section for Vallejo and chose 3-star hotel. The Courtyard is the only 3-star hotel in the Vallejo section. Then I started with $50/night and went up to $65 until they finally accepted that price.

Hope this helps 😀

i've been wanting to go to tucom-ca for medschool for so long now...and i my interview is in a little less than two weeks! soooo nervous!!!

hey guys
So I had my interview at Tuoro-CA earlier this week, and I was really really impressed with the school.
Some people might find Mare Island a bit creepy, but I thought it was great.

I have a question for those who have already interviewed and received a decision:

Dr. Haight really made it sound like at this early stage of the cycle, if you have been invited for an interview and do even reasonably well in the interview, you will be accepted. He really seemed to stress this point several times. He stated that they interview 425 and accept 270 people for their 135 spots (from past years they know that about 1 in 2 ppl accept the acceptance). He added that since it is still very early in the cycle, they are accepting a very high percentage of those interviewed.

So, I was curious if anyone here who has already interviewed was not accepted. Again, Dr. Haight really made it sound like if you are being interviewed this early, you are almost certainly going to be accepted. So, has anyone here been rejected/waitlisted? If so, do you feel like you really blew the interview? Thanks.

At this time last year I had already interviewed and been placed on the medium waitlist. I felt as if I had a very good interview - in that not only did I enjoy myself but thought that I remained calm as possible (at the time I had not interviewed anywhere else) and thoughtfully, intelligently answered all the questions.

Looking back I'm sure my relatively low MCAT and still rising GPA held me back, and that I was invited to interview despite those aspects of my resume.

if you don't mind me asking, what were your scores? my stats aren't that great but i really want to go to tucom.

I thought Dr. Haight stated that if you made it to the interview then the MCAT and gpa were no longer of importance. It was just your performance on the interview. I may be wrong though.

I pretty sure all schools and admissions/administration people say if you received an interview invite that your stats are fine. However, because your entire file gets re-reviewed before the final decision, I'd imagine that your numbers matter somewhat. But in general, I wouldn't worry about your numbers too much... To get an interview, they were really interested in your application as a whole.

This is what I've imagined what happened to me. I have great extracurriculars. Prior to returning to school I had started and ran a successful business, I am also a published author (short stories in magazines and collections) and had been working, at the time of the interview, in an E.D. for nearly 2 years. However, my MCAT was an unbalanced 24 (with a 6 in P.S. and an 11 in V.R.) and my GPA wasn't so hot (Cumulative = 3.65 but my Science = 3.05). And for better or worse, I had yet to graduate, which I did this past spring. I think the committee review after the interview saw my numbers and decided to waitlist me.

Seeing as how I was placed on several other waitlists last year and that I was able to communicate with them as to why I wasn't outright accepted, I found that, not surprisingly, my low numbers were holding me back.

After graduating and retaking the MCAT this past spring I was able to improve in both areas. I earned a balanced 31 (10,10,11) on the MCAT and brought my Sci-GPA to nearly a 3.20 accompanied by a higher cumulative.

And, as some of you may know, I was offered an early acceptance off the waitlist at TU-COM CA which means that I had to get all my applications together way before I was offered the seat. Since then I've continued to be offered interviews (D.O. & M.D.) that I turn down, all though its a bittersweet experience to turn down interviews after working so hard all these years.

While it is true that I may have interpreted my performance in the interview incorrectly, after sitting for many more interviews since that one I really think I did do well. Especially compared to my interview last year at PNWU which I think I blew -- and, wouldn't you know it, that was the one school which did not even consider me after the interview!

Good luck everyone.

Yea, I am also confused about the whole waitlist policy. At my interview, Dr. Haight also stressed several times that they do not like to waitlist students and that he felt it was cruel and unfair to put someone on the waitlist. But from looking at this thread, it is obvious that many people have been waitlisted there this year.

Perhaps Dr. Haight's own personal feelings are that he is not in favor of waitlists, but that the admissions committee may disagree with him on this point. Still a bit confusing though since he was quite direct about his aversion to waitlists.

Anyone else anxiously awaiting a decision from Touro-CA this Thursday?

For those that have interviewed there during this last 2 week cycle, this Thursday is the day they decide and they stated they would contact us this Thursday with the decision. Soooo nervous.

I still want an interview here if for no other reason to give it a shot to compare AZCOM to. Plus I could go visit some friends up north. Good luck to everyone who has already interviewed/been accepted.

Yea, you should def check it out if you get a chance. I really loved the school and got a great feeling from them. I find out in 2 days if I got in and right now it is my first choice by far. Good luck.

good luck! i hope you get accepted! =]
tucom-ca is my first choice too! i'm interviewing there next week.

I just interviewed yesterday. Have to be honest...I didn't know what to think going in, but I LOVE this school and I am praying for an acceptance. I have no problem sending in the deposit after 2 weeks. That's how sure I am. Everything about this school--location, faculty, and students--are amazing. It may not work for everyone, but it definitely works for me. It's the perfect learning environment. We find out in two days! I could not be more excited. I don't think I've ever wanted something so badly in my life! By the way, everyone of you who are worried about the "group" interview...stop it. It's much better this way because it gives you time to slow down and gather yourself again. No rapid fire questioning where if you give a bad response, you start doubting yourself and keep going down hill. Since it takes the interviewers some time for them to ask you another question, you have the opportunity to give yourself a mental pep talk and start fresh again. I loved it and it's not like they're asking the students to debate or even discuss the same question! So no worries about the last guy taking your response. Anyways, if anyone has any more questions, feel free to message me. Good luck to everyone that has interviewed, everyone that will be interviewing, and everyone waiting for an interview invite. Peace.

It was nice meeting everyone at todays interview! Best of luck to all of you 👍

+1 👍 Hope you had a good lunch with your mom! 😛

I loved the atmosphere yesterday. The campus has a beautiful view, and everyone was really nice! Lots of :luck: to all of us!! Great meeting you guys!!

I also interviewed yesterday and it was great meeting everyone! We had a super cool group of interviewees and we even shared e-mails with each other.

I want to comment on the panel + group interview format. I agree with AI1 in that it's absolutely nothing to be intimidated by. However, it is a unique format and I'd like to share some info for future interviewees...

There were five people in one interview group and six in the other (and three interviewers on each panel). I think I was only asked three or four questions (about one question per interviewer). I did take the opportunity to ask questions at the end, however it was still much more impersonal than other interviews. I'm not complaining about the experience (I loved it there), but the interview is supposed to be the most important part of their decision-making process and I don't see how they can come to a sound decision when their experience with each applicant is spread out so thin.

In other words, the interviewers will be basing their (very important) decision on a somewhat brief encounter with you. Go through your application thoroughly as if you didn't know who you were and generate some questions about your application. Then think of an articulate way to answer those. I'm not saying to rehearse answers, but be prepared for this interview. And if you're asked something you're not prepared for, just speak from your heart. Be genuine. You have limited time to shine. If you feel that you stumble in the beginning, I think it's a little harder to recover because you have to wait until someone comes back to you (or if they they come back to you).

How was SF? 😛

haha you must be tired after all that driving! SF was awesome! We went to Union Square when they were stringing up the lights on the giant Christmas tree. The smell of evergreen put me in the Holiday spirit. San Francisco is my 2nd home. 🙂 Too bad you couldn't come out with us, but I'm glad you got to be a good respectful son. haha 😉

Yikes!!! The admissions committee meets tomorrow (Thurs) to decide on all of us who interviewed this past 2 week cycle.
They will be notifying us via email on friday regarding their decision.

I am so nervous/anxious. I really loved the school. Good luck everyone.
