I got a letter the week after I got the email, and you're supposed to send your deposit in within two weeks of receiving the letter...so if it's been awhile, give Roger a call...

I haven't started looking yet. I was thinking of looking closer to May or June. Hopefully the packet coming soon will give us all the info we need!! So excited! :D

Hi guys, can any one recommend a good hotel in Henderson (or close by) that they stayed in before interviewing? Thank you!

is anyone thinking of getting a house and having roommates? Have any of you looked at places yet? I am quitting my job in april and will be prolly headed down in may if I am not at my military training just to start looking for places.....

Hi guys, can any one recommend a good hotel in Henderson (or close by) that they stayed in before interviewing? Thank you!
I stayed in the Wingate by Wyndham. It's really new, right in Henderson, and the biggest thing for me, doesn't have a casino, which may or may not be high on your list. I personally didn't want to be walking through the noise & smoke everytime I came in and out of the hotel. They have free breakfast in the morning and I got a free upgrade to a king suite, which was really nice. Geared more towards business travelers. Can't go wrong here.

I have also stayed at Green Valley Ranch on other occasions and it's nice, decent buffet, $5 craps and blackjack tables, right in the middle of lots of shops & restaurants, can't go wrong here either, but is more expensive.

Thought I'd say hi to everyone here! I was accepted a little while back and am 99% sure Touro-NV is where I'll be this fall! Excited to say the least! :soexcited:

Just wondering if anyone has been able to get in touch with Roger Corbman. I've been trying to call/email him for the past 2 weeks and nothing.

Does anyone know when the financial aid packet and all that is due? I've finished my FAFSA and trying to figure out what's the next step.

Roger Corbman has been out of town. I think he's been at school fairs in Arizona. He should be emailing you back by now.

I also finished my fafsa app this weekend, so i'm waiting for my package too.

In the receipt letter, when you put down your $2,000 deposit, it said that we'd be receiving an information packet on financial aid, housing, dates, immz, etc... at the end of Feb.... but I don't think anyone has received it yet.

I've been waiting too... so hopefully we can get it soon so we can know when to fill out things and check out housing...

I can't wait to meet all of you... I think we are all going to have a great time in med school!! :)

By the way... does anyone know if there is an information session/open house thing in May... or do we just start meeting each other/learning more about the school in August??

Hi to the new people!!! It's starting to feel more real :D

I've also submitted my FAFSA, but thought it would take awhile before we hear anything back, no?

...also, it seems that our White Coat Ceremony is going to be later in the year, around October - can anyone confirm this? Thanks!

I'm so glad there are other people like me out there. I have been trying to get info on when all the financial aid would be available for a couple weeks now and haven't made any progress. Anyway congrats to everyone for being accepted and I'm excited to meet everyone. If any one gets any info on financial aid I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks !

Ah, didn't know about that end of Feb packet etc. As far as housing goes, I would look now as housing is not through the school. I looked for housing back in Nov. and should be getting a call from the lady sometime this month to see what will be available for July.

Roger told me the White Coat Ceremony will be in October.

Wow... October does seem late! But either way... it sounds so exciting to be having our white coat ceremony!

And thanks for the tip SupraDOc about the housing... I'll start looking more into that!!

Also... just a heads up to everyone about the info. packet... I emailed Roger today to see when we'd be getting more info. and he said he'll be creating our "class listserves" (not sure what that is exactly) within the next week or so... and he'll be emailing us information in the next few weeks. So... I'd be expecting information probably closer to the end of March.

:)

Hey thanks supradoc and missdo!!

just curious supradoc - where are you looking for housing?

I'm going down in a few weeks to look at apartments but don't really know of places beyond the ones that are mentioned on tunlive...like Remington and Allegro.

The class listserve is the email group for your class. that way roger can just type [email protected] (or whatever they decide the addy to be) and it will automatically email all of you guys, instead of making him type in each email addy one by one.

There are plenty of apartment building in henderson, its all just depends on how far you want to commute to school. Allegro and Timberlake are there, and VERY close, but if you are willing to commute an extra 10 minutes there are plenty of options. :D

there are apartments/condos/houses down stephanie, horizon ridge, eastern, etc. that are good options.

happy house hunting! :luck:

And thanks for the input on housing!

Cool he emailed you back, good info. My email probably got lost in his inbox lol.

Yea, there are LOTS of places to look but the Green Valley district seems to have the nice places (about 15min/6mi from school). I looked at a lot of possible places online to add to the list they gave us at interviews (apt list websites for Henderson). The thing that made it easier for me to narrow the list down was that I really wanted a garage. After visiting a few, it was really clear where I wanted to stay: Horizon Ridge Villas due to costs/atmosphere. There were some places I'd walk into and immediately know I didn't want to live there. Just make a list, bring out the GPS, and have fun!

thanks supradoc! i'm really excited to visit the area and soak in the sun! where are you moving from?

and i just got an email about the "DO-13 admit" mailing list - hooray! it's becoming more real!! :D

It sure is becoming more real! I'm getting excited lol. I'll be moving from Virginia Beach, VA... cross country in mid-July. How about yourself?

Hmm, so that's 3 out of DC or so. Do you know the others??? I was debating about driving my car out there but I might just have it shipped out. We might as well have all the east coasters caravan out there LOL. I've done some long drives but not anything cross-country.

So has anyone found a good bank to go through for your stafford loans? I have researched a lot of them and they all look pretty much the same. 1 % origination fees, 1% default fees, and all give you some small interest rate deducation for direct payments. Is there somthing I am missing ? I heard rumors of banks that don't compound your interest while your in school, but haven't found any that actualy do . Any help would be great !

Thanks

I was talking to one of the first years about this along with a friend in pharmacy school and they said they're basically all the same. Or if you can find one that has the lowest interest rate but they all seem to have the same one. The first year did tell me to wait till the end of March to apply for a lender. At least that's what Touro-NV has told them to do.

haha no i don't them personally but it's nice to know that there's a dc group of us!

are you guys waiting to apply for loans then? i already applied through my current lender, thought it would just be easiest to keep things with the same company and i've been happy with them these past few years.

also i was under the impression that most companies have the 3% origination fee b/c it is required by the government, unless you do a private loan?

Most lenders are very similar. The interest rates are controlled by the governement, 6.8 % on stafford loans and 8.5 for grad-plus loans. However, fees are not always the same. 1% origination fee is pretty standard for the stafford loan and 3 % is typical for the grad plus. But fees do vary from bank to bank. Through some research on SDN I found that through Discovery you can get 0% origination fees and 8.25 interest on your grad-plus loans. I am currently researching discovery loans to see if there are any draw backs.

Put my $2K down! I'm relieved and excited at the same time! Can't wait to meet you all in August. :)

Did you guys get Roger's emails this morning, including the financial aid estimate for this year? $75,113!!!!! Looks like the numbers went up about $4K from last yr.

I've never had ANY debt before and all these huge numbers and just the actual prospect of being in debt are freaking me out. I know it's necessary and almost all med students have some sort of financial aid, but if cost of attendance rises $4K each yr, we will be approx. $324,000 in debt by graduation!

Does anyone have any advice or encouragement? I'm kinda scared!

I know this isn't going to give you any comfort, but $ 324,000 is with out 4 years of interest added to it. With interest it will be more like 400,000 + and if we take 25 to 30 years to pay it off we will end up paying over 1 million dollars over the life of the loan. I know it is very overwhelming. However, as the average doctor can make close to 200,000 a year we should be ok. The payments will be around 2,000 a month, which means that you can still live somewhat comfortabely even with a large amount of debt. And hey since we are going to be living so close to the strip it is possible to win it all back in one lucky night!!

i already have a sizable amount of debt from school :(
but the COA is quite high and you don't have to take the maximum amount. it's a crazy amount of money but there's scholarships, loan forgiveness programs, coupon clippings....it'll be okay!!

Thanks heman & thriftnuh! I set up a meeting with my parents' financial adviser and hopefully it will alleviate some of this overwhelming-ness! I have so many questions and I don't even know where to start, so I hope this meeting will point me in the right direction. :xf: I'll be sure to post anything interesting I find out.

Did Roger send out a list of immunizations we need? Like a school physical?

Just wanted to start a thread for my fellow classmates that have been accepted at Touro-NV.

congratulations to the 2013 Touro NV Class! You will get a great education and enjoy life in Las Vegas.

First of all I want to congratulate all the Touro students class of 2013. I just joined the SDN so I am pretty new to this. I am actually a Las Vegas resident, but I don't know anyone from Las Vegas that is going to be attending Touro. Also, I am looking for a possible roommate. I am a very clean and organized girl and looking for someone as clean and organized as I am preferably a girl. I'm planing to move out of my parents in mid July and have been looking at apartments pretty close to the campus. Please message me if you are interested. Also, I have been living in Vegas for 8 years so I am very familiar with this town.
Cheers and see you all at the white coat ceremony yayyyy for class of 2013:thumbup:

I just spoke to Mary Ann and the white coat ceremony is on May 17th at Ballys :D see you there
