TUCOM-NV Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Interview Invite for April 17 pm session. I was placed on hold pre-interview. I thought for sure I would never hear from this school again.

The admissions lady said the class is currently 3/4 full and there are 2 interview dates before April 17.

That is great to hear, as I will be interviewing on Monday, 4/2 so a better chance for acceptance is nice. I wasn't placed on hold, they (and I was also) waiting for my D.O. LOR. Any unique interview questions asked? I've had a handful of other interviews so I am comfortable with the standard why DO? Why Touro? What makes you a good candidate? etc. Others that are more unique would be good to know rather than be blindsided by them interview day.

It's based on your whole application, so be prepared to answer any possible questions that come up. You only have 15-25 minutes, so make sure you shine!

I was asked what I felt the weakest part of my application was and why...that was one I hadn't heard before.

definitely know why nevada...why touro.
they asked me what do i know about the curriculum here and how does it fit well in what i want
(ie very traditional curriculum..lecture based)
since its only MAX 20 min...they will not go into detail about any one specific area about ur application...rather ask one or two questions about each thing...
they also asked me about research...i explained in 15-20 seconds and we moved on.
lets see what else...ummm...we obv talked about my volunteer experiences and outreach work...
also something along the lines of either what i do in my free time or what i do to relieve stress....
last 2-3 min you will get to ask them questions...
its the most laid back interview...
all u need to do to prepare is to read ur personal statement...and your aacomas application. have a little idea about the timeline...ie. from which year to which year you volunteered at a specific place.
the rest of the information about the school itself will be given before the interview during the presentation.
hope that helps!
good luck 🙂

Orientation is tentatively set for Aug 1st, with class starting shortly thereafter.

Hi everyone. I am looking to see if there are any ladies that are comfortable sharing a place with a very respectful, clean, and quiet guy like me. I have had room mates of all types through the years, and I find it is easiest for me to communicate and share a clean and quiet living space with women. If any of you are comfortable with this, please send me a message. Take care.

Chances of scoring shot down, I understand your pain.

But seriously, this is not the place to do this. Go to the DO16 fb page, or better yet go to the tunlive.com site if you're looking for roommates.

You're honestly a joke man. Get your head out of the gutter.

Grow up man

Agreed. Grow up. Some men are more comfortable living with women than men and some women are more comfortable living with men than women, it is life. Not to mention, why do you even assume the guy is straight and would want to have sex with a girl? I hope you do a lot of growing up before beginning medical school, as this closed minded perspective and obnoxious commentary will do nothing but hold you back professionally.

Very well said my friend. I'm proud to call you a future colleague.

I'm pretty sure he's just joking. Calm down guys

Here everyone, please take one. They're called chill pills.

I poked fun at the overtly gentle way you wrote your post, no harm no foul. I apologize if you took offense, but if you look at it from a creeper's perspective you can see the humor in it.

As a personal anecdote, I lived with 2 sorority girls in college for 6 months in a house when I was 21 or so. You would not believe the level of nasty the bathroom gets until you share one with a girl. OMG.

Anyway, I would recommend against it. You think I'm crazy, but hear me out: At first I thought it was great: good-looking girls, had even better-looking sorority girlfriends that would come over or have parties, and I thought I was in heaven. But slowly, I started realizing I was the one getting the short end of the bargain. I ended up doing most of the cleaning, and the yardwork, and the repairs, and the heavy lifting, and so on and so forth. I couldn't have any of my guy friends over to hang out, I couldn't hang out in my underwear, and I dealt with the emotional disasters during certain periods of the month. I was pretty much relegated to my room only, or leave the house to hang out with my friends. You think it won't happen to you, but mark my words: it's not as good as it seems.

Can we all be friends now?

Can someone repost the FB page link for touro class of 2016, if it exists?

I knew you were joking if it makes you feel any better...eeeks.

interviewed 2/29
accepted 3/28

When I interviewed they said they were running a little behind on the interview schedule this year so there's probably more spots.

It's all good G. Funny, note- I am probably one of a handful of people to never have been on Facebook. I figured it would be okay to give a shout out about roommates here instead.

On another note- have people started to sign their MPN and apply for the gradplus loans, etc.? Should we take care of that after April 15th? Thanks everyone.

Are they still sending out Interview Invites or is TUCOM-NV pretty much done for this fall? Thanks 🙂

Someone a couple of posts before this said they may be sending out more invites. Best of luck to you.

I put up a roommate ad in the new Touro 16 forum...pm me if you're interested!

Hi everyone. I was just given an interview for April 11th..wasnt expecting this at all since I just took my MCAT. My gpa is rather low (3.3) and I didnt receive a secondary until March 13th. Received an email on 4/2 stating that they didnt have my LORs, called them yesterday to notify them I had electronically sent my letters through Interfolio. Woke up today and had an interview offer email. First and only interview this application cycle. Really excited and nervous.

Congratulations!! The interview is quick and will be over before you realize it. Relax, enjoy the moment, and give it your all. Remember: they invited you for a reason. Now it's time to show them why. Best of luck to you my friend.

High wait list, interviewed march 9th. Excited and hopeful at the chance to attend touro nevada. Does anyone know if the adcom will change my waitlist ranking if i update them with new activities/publications?

How did you feel the interview went? Any questions that surprised you..or pretty similar to the ones everyone else stated on here? Also if you don't mind sharing your stats with us?

Thanks!

I was told by someone at the school to send updated information aka a "letter of interest" if you are high waitlisted. I got pulled off the WL before I had to do this, but this information came from a TU representative.

I felt the interview went okay, I could have answered one or two questions better. Nothing really surprised me but I wish I could have been more knowledgable about the current health care debate.. I have since read up on a lot of stuff, just wished I had that knowledge when I interviewed.
Stats: 3.1 overall, 3.4 sci, non trad, 33 mcat, 2 publications, working as tech at ophthalmology practice & transmission electron microscopy lab, shadowed DO in ER for 3 months. Just started up a non profit with the ophthalmologist I work for. However my transcript is checkered w Ds Fs and Ws prior to pursuing medicine(I started a successful business during ugrad and almost dropped out). It's been hard recovering from a 2.5 gpa but it'll all be worth it if I get pulled off the wait list 🙂

Just cancelled my April 17th interview. The lady told me the spot will go to someone else. Good luck to those waiting for an interview!

I wish you the best, I think you have a great chance coming off the high waitlist.

I am interviewing on April 11th as well.

Was looking at the match list. Is it easier to get an ortho match from this school, or were there just a bunch of people who were interested in ortho?

There's an ortho residency right in town. That might have something to do with it.

I don't know that it's necessarily easier to get an ortho match from any specific school. But then again, who knows, because almost all of the people who applied ortho this year from TUNCOM matched (I believe 8 out of 10, if I'm right). I went to the ortho panel (every year the 4th years who match do a Q&A for everyone else), and many of them even matched into their 1st choices. That was pretty impressive, I thought. I think someone told me there are 60 DO ortho positions total (correct me if I'm wrong). Also, althought I do know that one of the students from the panel is going to the residency in town, many of the others were going out of state, so I'm not sure how much of a difference the program in town made to the match results.

One important thing to keep in mind when looking at match lists (although I did the same thing!) is that the specialties don't necessarily show how competitive the students are from the school. Some of our top students are probably going to still want to go into primary care, despite being competitive enough for a more "prestigioius" specialty. It's all about priorities. 🙂

is the 2012 match list available anywhere?

got the 'secondary being processed' email today. For those that received interviews, how long did it take between secondary being complete and interview invite?

One month, but that was back in september. I'm willing to bet they're going through them faster now bc it's getting pretty close to the end of the cycle. You should hear soon 🙂

I kinda figured things would go quicker at this stage in the game, but it's always nice to have my suspicions confirmed by someone else 🙂. Hoping I will hear something within the week!

Hey guys,

Just joined because I wanted to say that I am interviewing at Touro-NV on April 11th (tomorrow) as well, in the afternoon (12:45 pm) session. I received the e-mail invite from Jessica about 4 weeks ago. I think I saw that three other people who posted on this page of the thread are also interviewing on that date. I'm staying at the Hilton Gardens inn ( one of those three hotels they recommended in the interview e-mail), so if any of you guys wanted to grab dinner or something tonight let me know. I'm renting a car so if you guys aren't then I could pick you up if you're staying at a different hotel. Just shoot me a PM or respond in the thread here if interested and I'll PM you guys my cell phone number and we'll get something going.
