TUCOM-NV Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those who got accepted off waitlist, how were you notified? Email, phone call, letter?

For those who got pulled off the waitlist already mind sharing your stats? You can PM me if you want.

got the 'secondary being processed' email today. For those that received interviews, how long did it take between secondary being complete and interview invite?

Edit: Sorry, I didn't see your earlier post saying that you received an interview. Congrats! I had just finished filling out a post with the relevant data but now I see that it's no longer applicable or necessary.

Does anyone know how many people have been accepted so far? I assume no one knows but I am just interested.

When I interviewed on 4/11 they told us that 80% of the class was full.

I just interviewed this past Wednesday and I felt it went okay.

My stats:

Alright, it's been 2 months, and last year's came out in mid-April. Where's the match list?!

Hey everyone. I am a second year student at Touro. I have a friend that is starting here this next year, and he asked my advice about a few things and recommended that I post it here for people trying to decide where to go. Kind of a "here is my honest opinion, the good and the bad" type thing for those of you that have been accepted to multiple schools and are trying to make the decision. I know when I was trying to decide, it was difficult to find somebody to give an honest opinion that wasn't somehow part of the admissions process.

I think people are going to find things to complain about no matter where they go to school, so take any complaints you read about with a grain of salt. I have overall been fairly happy with Touro. As a school, TUN is fairly responsive to student needs. Overall, the teachers are good. Some are really good, some aren't. I didn't really have any major complaints about academics the first year other than the common "I can't really understand that teacher," or whatever. You are going to find that type of thing wherever you go.

As a second year, I have two things that bother me, and I think they are significant enough that I'm not sure I would come here again if I had to do it over again. First, the pathology at TUN is only partially "taught." We have several pathology professors, and the main one really doesn't teach path. He gives a huge single spaced word document (with no pictures) that you are supposed to learn from (like 200 pages long per lecture), and then class is pretty much just spent doing review questions. That type of learning works for some people, but it doesn't work for me and the vast majority of my classmates that I have talked to. So, pathology ends up being almost a self taught course at TUN. That might be appealing to some people, but it worries me that the single most heavily tested subject on boards is self-taught. We have brought this up to administration, and there seems to be no interest in changing how things are done. TUN has traditionally done fairly well in the path section of boards, but I think that is because we are so worried about the class (his tests are REALLY hard) that we almost neglect other subjects to teach ourselves path.

Secondly, most other schools realize that the second semester of your second year is a time most people use to prepare for boards, so that semester is purposely light. At TUN it has been the busiest semester so far. I had planned on studying for boards a lot more than I have, but classes have been so busy that there really hasn't been time to do too much. Again, this might not bother some people, but boards scores are ridiculously important (much more so than class grades) so I would appreciate if this semester were lighter to allow for studying, like most other schools do.

Those two complaints might not be a big deal to some people, but I feel like they directly affect how I will do on the boards, so it bothers me. The rest of our faculty is actually pretty good. I really like our pharm department, and I think the micro department does a really good job getting us ready for boards. I'm not just looking to complain, because most things are really good at TUN, I just don't know if those two complaints are acceptable to me or not.

Good luck to everyone in the application process. It can be very stressful and annoying if you let it. If anyone has any questions about living in Henderson, or going to med school with a family/kids, or anything else, feel free to PM me, I would be happy to talk.

Edit: Forgot to add something I really like about TUN- the students aren't out to get each other. At least in the 2nd year (do14 class) it seems like everyone is more than happy to help out classmates--sharing notes, helping study, etc. I always heard before med school that it was so cutthroat that people would purposely try and hurt classmates' chances, but I haven't seen any of that here. Not sure if that is unique to my class, or unique to TUN, or what, but there you go.

Hey guys, I have an interview coming up this Monday 4/23. What sort of questions should I be preparing for? Are there any out of the blue questions that I should be aware of coming in? Also, are there even seats still open for the class of 2016? I just want to know my chances of getting an acceptance.

I interviewed yesterday. They told us the class was 80% full, which would mean there is still appx. 27 seats left. The interview questions were pretty straight forward (glad I didn't get the 'what do you think about the healthcare bill' , lol). Be prepared to address any weaknesses in your application (should they ask about them), and what you have done to strengthen those areas. Overall, it was a great experience. I feel this school has a lot to offer as is definitely one of my top choices, so I am hoping for some good news in about 10 days 🙂!

One of the biggest things I learned during all my interviews was don't wait for them to ask you the golden question you're hoping for. If you have something awesome in your app that you feel they neeeed to know, bring it up! You'll be much more confident talking about something you love instead of answering some dumb question about what kitchen appliance you are most like, right? Good luck!

To people who have been accepted ... do any of you mind sharing your stats? (GPA/MCAT)?

For those who interviewed recently: a I little bird told me that letters are being sent out today (in case anyone on here was wondering, I know I was, 🙂).

Are you sure? I just called yesterday, and I was told they weren't going to start mailing them out until Thurs.

You're right. Just called to update my change of address and they said they'd send them out by either today or tomorrow morning.

Just got my letter. High Wait-list. Gotta keep my fingers crossed..anyone else hear back?

Not yet. Still waiting on snail mail. What state are you in? I'm in Texas so I figure the soonest I will get something is tomorrow. High wait list is a good place to be.

I'm in Nevada. Good luck to you!

Got a letter from the Dean of Admissions today (addressed to us accepted students):

.The Office of Admissions has received a large volume of phone calls and emails in regards to the final $1,000 deposit. If you have submitted your final deposit, there is no need to submit proof of payment. We will verify with the Bursar Department on May 2nd which students who have paid or not paid the total deposit of $3,000. There is no need to submit any sort of evidence to the Office of Admissions for the remaining $1,000 deposit. .
. .
.If you have not paid your final deposit of $1,000, you have until May 1st to do so. If you are not able to find your TUN identification number, please feel free to email me and I would be happy to provide you the information. At this time, there are no extensions and if you do not proceed to make the final payment, you will immediately receive an email notification on your removal from the class. If you have submitted your full deposit, there is no need to worry. .
This means that the school will drop all those who haven't sent in the whole deposit on the final deadline of May 2nd, and that we should expect considerable waitlist movement from that date forward. Good luck everyone!

To anyone that withdrew their acceptance after paying the deposit: How much of your deposit was refunded out of the $2000 or $3000 deposit?
