I originally posted this in the pre-vet forum, but someone suggested I move it here where the current students are. So here it goes...

I just submitted my application to Tufts and I wanted to ask current students, how is the atmosphere at Tufts? Class of 2011 how is your first year going? Older students are you glad you chose to go to Tufts?

first year is going pretty well. i've got my second anatomy exam tomorrow, so my opinion may change in the next 24 hours 🙂

most of my classmates are really nice, and overall we seem to get along pretty well. the dynamics between classes changes from year to year, but overall i've noticed that we have a lot less "drama" than most of the other vet schools, based on what i've heard from other first years at other schools. most of the class will be women (we have 12 guys out of 81, i think?), and our class has WAY more guys than any other one currently at school.

our professors are FANTASTIC. we have one who is notoriously....difficult....and many students have problems with him, but everyone else goes WAY out of their way to help you. Many will come in on weekends to help, and they will always stay late before an exam to make sure nobody has any questions. Even the professor who isn't nice in class is a great help if you go to see him 1 on 1.

as a first year, you do have some opportunities to get into at least the large animal hospital as a student tech, and i believe small animal critical care hires as well.

i chose between a few schools to come here, and i was really on the fence about my decision, but i'm really happy with my choice.

if you have any other questions, PM me and i'd be happy to give you my email.

Sorry about the delayed response--we've had a fun series of exams the last few weeks. But now we have a whole ten days until our p-chem final!😀

I agree with silverelf! I am enjoying Tufts and am very glad I chose to come here (over Cornell if you want my reasons PM me). Our professors are great and even the difficult one knows his stuff he just sometimes has difficulty passing it on to us. One of the things I like about Tufts is that we have clinical skills days were we learn to do basic handling and restraint with dogs/cats, horses, cows, pigs, and sheep. If you know this stuff already that's great and its a nice break from lecture.

You can get into the hospital either as part of small or large animal tech team or ICU assisting. Although I don't really find time to do it!

A possible drawback about Tufts is that it is in North Grafton while the rest of Tufts is in Medford. If you don't like cities this is a great thing, if you are expecting an associated undergrad community and the activities that brings you will miss that at Tufts.

Hi,
I just submitted my application to tufts and am keeping my fingers crossed. I was just wondering if either of you commute or know anyone who commutes to school. I know there is no on-campus housing or whatever but I'm planning on having a 30-45 minute commute and was wondering if you know anyone who has done this and their opinion of it.
Thanks!

it seems to run about 50-50 in our class. Many live close to school, and many (like me!) run a 30 minute to 1 hour-ish commute. I do a 1/2 hour each way, and I love it! I use the time in my car to eat breakfast and just relax, and I really like it that way. I find I'm much more productive in class than if I were to roll out of bed and walk to class (i.e. undergrad)
