Applicants,

I feel like it was just yesterday that I was in your shoes and getting my application together. I remember how grateful I was when residents would post thoughts and comments on the particular programs that they were affiliated with.

I wanted to tell you about the program at the Tufts University School of Medicine. We are primarily based out of the Tufts-New England Medical Center (primary teaching hospital of the Tufts University School of Medicine) in Boston, and rotate through Children's Hospital of Boston (Harvard Medical School), Rhode Island Hospital (Brown Medical School, only 45 minutes away), as well as a private practice group in the suburbs of Boston. It is the ideal combination of exposure to academic otolaryngology as well as ENT performed in the private practice setting. With all of these rotations, you have exposure to more than 35 otolaryngology attendings during your 4 years in the program [see list below].

In order to increase the degree of diversity as well as decrease the inbreeding within the program, we encourage 4th year students from outside medical schools interested in doing a sub-internship with us to please contact our department.

The primary attendings at Tufts – NEMC include:

Dr. Elie Rebeiz, Chairman and staple in the Boston otolaryngology community since completion of fellowship at Massachusettes Eye & Ear.

Dr. Richard Wein, our Residency Director, completed his training under Weber in Head & Neck Surgery at Penn.

Dr. Clark Elliott, our Pediatric Otolaryngologist who trained under the famed Zalzal.

Dr. Weiru Shao, our Otologist in practice for several years since completion of Otology fellowship under Paparella

Dr. Arnold Lee, former resident of our program, who went onto fellowship in Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery under the auspices of Thomas & Toriumi at UIC (‘nuff said), and now returns as our Director of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Arnold Lee, MD, Facial Plastic Surgery Fellowship at UIC with Thomas & Toriumi, current Director of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Tufts-NEMC

At the Tufts Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery program, we also have our own Multidiciplinary Cleft Lip & Cleft Palate Clinic run strictly by the Otolaryngology-HNS service. This is one of the few cleft programs in the country run by an Otolaryngology-HNS Service. This is usually run by Plastic Surgery at most centers. You get a good number of cleft cases. Additionally, there is opportunity to travel abroad with a non-profit (NGO) which is run by our faculty. One of our PGY-5s went to the Philippines and one of our PGY-4s went to Ecuador for a Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate reconstruction program through the NGO.

Our academic days, usually all afternoon each Wednesday, are integrated with the Boston University Otolaryngology Program (as the two programs were a combined program until the mid-90s). There remains a strong friendly relationship between the two programs, as you get to know the residents at the other program each Wednesday afternoons as well as during combined journal clubs.

Finally, I wanted to close this message with some words about Boston, for those who have never been to this city. Boston is a fun young city, filled with intellectual students, young adults in business, and some of the most dedicated (and fanatic) sports fans you have ever seen in your young life. The Red Sox and Patriots are always the buzz (oh, everyone uses cameras!), and now that KG is playing for the Celtics, things could get interesting. If you are into lobstah and chowdah, then this is your place. The summers in Boston are tight, and the winter activities in the area are at your fingertips.

Best of luck in this process. Before you know it, you will be looking back on it all, as I am now.

Care to elaborate on anything that isn't so rosey?

I think an overview like this has the potential to be very helpful but only if it's a little more balanced. I don't think you should bash your program or anything but I think each of us that are residents know there are things that could stand to be a little better about our programs.
