Hello all!

I was looking into tuitions and cost living schools provided in the 2015 guide. I found that most schools list around $20,000 for cost of living (of course it depends on the location) but some schools only listed about $10,000. I'm assuming they only considered rent where as other schools considered rent+transportation+...

Anyway, my question is, which one do you think I should go by on deciding which school to apply? Assuming tuition is more of a standard quantity compare to cost of living because not all schools include the same things in the cost of living...

Thank you in advance! 🙂

Keep track of how much you spend... sign up for free online budgeting software or something

For example...

rent/utilities: 480
food: 300
health & car ins: 200
gas & car repair average: 300
shopping: 100

total: 1,380 per month, or 16,560 per year

I think that would be a pretty disciplined budget for a single student at a suburban dental school... maybe others can qualify those numbers

I'm using the numbers they provide as an accurate overestimate, based on cost of living in the area. For example, rent in NYC is surely higher than most other areas. However, I do know that some are overestimates. My undergraduate institution is listed as $21000 per year when I can get by spending ~$12000 per year with no car.

Roommate situations will impact your overall costs too. From what others have said, the costs are overestimates, but, for the loans, they are based on the cost of attendance so it's a good thing they are high if you should need all of that money for some reason.

If estimated total cost is available, I would use that to determine which school to apply. Different schools have different smaller fees(equipment, rental, etc.) that adds up to quite a sum so tuition isn't always the best measure of the true cost of the school. If the figure is not available in your book, you will have to google it and find it on their school webpage.

Great point, thank you!

Or you can go with the non-westerner approach and if you have the opportunity to get into an in-state school and live with your family, you are set. Then again people might mock you for living with your parents, and say grow up. But in deep reflection you realize they are indeed idiots. lol.

That's my plan if I get into my in-state. I don't care what anyone thinks and my parents would prefer I not spend the extra money to rent a place when they live 20 minutes from the dental school 😀. One of my friends from college is hoping to go to Med School there too and my parents have already offered him one of the extra bedrooms to save costs for him too.
