Tulane Class of 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What was the cost?

Depends on when, ranged from like 30-50 most of the time. If you talk to the manager stanley tell him you're a poor student here at Tulane Med and he may give you a discount.

Sounds good, (can I book this online?)

I'd check the price using the online site and then call the specific place to see if you can get a cheaper rate by booking over the phone....then do whichever ends up being less.

Hey everyone-

To check our financial aid status do we use a PIN that Tulane gives us or the one that we got from FAFSA?

Are our rewards posted yet?

Thanks

Im still waiting for mine, did you get yours already (And i presume that Tulane has their own assigned pins)

No I didn't get mine yet. It just said in that opening paperwork to check on your status, but it wouldn't let me using the FAFSA PIN I was given so I was confused.

Thanks!

I presume thats because that packet will also be mailed with the award packet, we just got a sneak peak of it.

This Apartment has been rented. Congrats to the 1st year student moving in next door to me - you're the lucky winner! If you're still looking for a place to live, I posted another listing for my landlord:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=5332055#post5332055

Welcome to all of the new Tulane students.

I'm a 4th year student and the other side of my shotgun house is up for rent. I thought I would post this for my landlord so that I might get two more med students to move in next door. I had two other med students as neighbors, but they're moving out. The place is dog friendly with an enclosed backyard.
Here are the specs:

Address: 1531 Hillary St. Google Map Link
Rent $1000 (Raised only $100 from pre-hurricane levels)
2 Bedroom
1 Bath
"Shotgun" layout (no hallways, one long apartment with room after room)
Central Air and Heat
Washer & Dryer
Hardwood floors throughout
Dishwasher
Offstreet parking for one car in the driveway
Enclosed backyard that is great for dogs.
Good location - short walk to uptown campus (Reilly Fitness Center & Library)
5-10 Minute drive down Claiborne to the Med School

**We can share cable and wireless internet as well!!! - save ~$50 a month**

I hope a med student can move in next door and save us from living next door to an undergrad (gasp!). We have a 2 year old dog that is very friendly and would love some company from another friendly dog in the backyard.

If you are interested give my landlord a call. Her name is Debra and her cell phone number is 504-338- 9919.

If you have any questions, just PM me or ask a question here and I'll do my best to answer.

There are also some photos of the place at my listing on the Tulane student forum here:

Thanks,
Jon

PS - Being near a cemetery makes the neighborhood very quiet. :) Oh, and if you leave them alone, the zombies are no trouble.

Thanks for the tip... I added a couple pics of the property.

http://www.som.tulane.edu/shuttle.html

EDIT: Theres also a shopping shuttle but I dont know any info on when it runs. As far as the above intercampus shuttle I can tell you that its not the most reliable transport...they're often late and sometimes they dont do all the stops....for no reason at all (from what I can tell).

Going from the med school to Reily generally takes 45 to an hour.

the above schedule is not current. look at the dates closely and you'll see they are all 2005. the som website has A LOT of out-of-date links. here is the current schedule. note that it is the summer schedule and only good thru august.

https://clue.tcs.tulane.edu/projects/dps/Uptown_Downtown_Summer_Schedule.pdf

sort of sucks cuz it doesnt even go from uptown to downtown before 8am so unless you're cool being late to class there's not much help. i took it some during the normal school year at it does start earlier.

Braluk-

My roomate & I might be able to help. We are living uptown near the Tulane main campus.

Ohh PM me with your name and contact info (and if you're on facebook already that would be cool :) ) I probably wont have a car until second semester (when my finances are in order) so I wouldn't mind paying for gas in the meanwhile if it came down to it

Anyone have any insight on "925 Common Street Apartments"?

It seems ok from what little I can tell. The biggest draw for me is how close it is to the med school. A couple of blocks at most.

Has anyone received financial aid or info for our new email accounts? just want to make sure I'm not missing anything...

whats with this snma scrub sale? is this something we have to order and deal with now, or can we wait till we get there. Its listed as a required form. How many sets of scrubs do people get? how do the sizes work (ie what do they correspond too in regular clothing sizes?) How am i to decide on colors that willl not clash with the walls of the anatomy lab? i absolutely must avoid looking ridiculous.

I have an immunization question.

I'm having trouble getting a Dr. to sign the form. I've had those immunizations done all over the world over the last couple of decades. Its physically impossible for me to track down these physicians, if they are even alive, to get the signatures.

Every doctor I've taken it to so far says they will only sign for immunizations they or thier staff have done. I have all of the documentation proving I've had the immunizations but getting someone to sign a form is proving tremendously difficult.

Solutions anyone?

Scintillation,

I have the same scrubs questions. They have numbers next to the sizes (i.e. L = 14-18) but I can't tell you how little that means to me. May help the ladies but it means jack shiit to me.

Also. Why do we have to buy scrubs from this organization. Why can't we use our own. Are these special scrubs? Will they take my tests for me?

Sigh. I can't wait for all the BS to be over.

i don't care what they say about the scrubs. i'm going to buy them wherever i feel like. i doubt it will make much difference. unless you plan on those colorful decorated scrubs, i doubt anyone will be able to tell.

I think large is generally a good fit for most. But I would assume that most can just buy it when they get there.
As for financial aid info, on the facebook group, someone just got their financial aid packet yesterday so I would presume that it is in the mail and starting to get out to everyone so keep checking! Also Ill be down from June 26-29th, lemme know if you're around so I can bug you

You can get your scrubs wherever you want, they can be any color. They're just going to get covered in cadaver fat anyway. There's also a scrubs store in Metairie if you want to wait and try some on.

Hey friends,

Thanks for all your support and advice earlier on in the application cycle with advice about interviewing and the "acceptance range".

I just received ACP acceptance yesterday via snail mail. That means that I will be taking anatomy and histology with you all soon.

New Orleans will be a blast!

Danger

Guys, The scrub sale is just a fundraiser for that organization. You can wear whatever you want to lab that you won't mind parting with at the end of the class (most people wear scrubs, any color you want, some wore scrub pants/tshirt etc). Try not to stress! I remember there being a lot of forms and uncertainty, but you'll all be ok!!

Did anyone receive a PIN to log onto the financial aid site?

i share this problem. anybody have any thoughts? i have copies of all the pertinent immunizations/titres but do not currently have health insurance so dont really want to fork up $80 or w/e an office visit is these days, just to have the doc sign the form or worse, tell me he wont. i'm in new orleans now, and i'm thinkng about stopping by the health center and seeing what they suggest. i'm sort of thinking/hoping they'll say, that's fine as long as you have the necessary forms to prove everything.

For the white coats, I don't know exactly how you're supposed to measure. Just make a guess, and if it doesn't fit, you'll be able to exchange it for the right size after the White Coat ceremony. Kai just had his hemmed, because it dragged on the ground.

More short cracks bectar, honestly? I think it's just sour grapes because you'll never know that rush of pure joy from wearing my white coat while you make me breakfast in the morning after a night of pudenal ecstasy. It's ok though, despite your venom, I still love you.

Harrah's will be the end of me. I've been in N.O. for a little while now and I just can't stay away.

Do any of the current students hang out there a lot?

Oh. One more question.

Does anyone know where the med school's bookstore is? I drove to the undergrad's bookstore and asked for their white coats so I could check the size and the lady tells me they don't carry them, only the med school bookstore does.

I didn't even know there was a separate bookstore.

The bookstore is in the medical school building (1430 Tulane Ave). Follow the right hallway back almost to the cafeteria, make a right before you get there, then a left and the bookstore is back there. Good luck

I have an odd request, but here goes. I'm in charge of getting people to respond to the 31 question's thread in the mentor forum and am looking for current students at all of the med schools of the US. So, I realize this is the class thread for the incoming class, but perhaps someone from previous classes has been helpful in answering your questions and giving you advice in this thread. I have no time to read through every single class thread to get this info, but if you could post some user names of some such people (or pm them to me, including what school you are from), I can pm them with my request. Thanks!

For anyone worrying about financial aid...

as I posted on Facebook, I got my award letter a good bit ago, but that letter only had to travel 10 minutes from campus.

Is anyone else waiting on their financial aid still? Can we check it online?

For New Orleans, which service is better: Verizon or T-Mobile?

Danger out.

Danger out.

I can't speak for T-Mobile, but I've had Verizon for 3 years now and haven't had any service issues. Immediately following Katrina I wasn't able to get phone service (text messaging worked), but I think that was the case for all carriers.

I had T-Mobile when I moved down here hardly ever had service. I switched to Verizon and haven't had any issues. So I'd say Verizon.

Expensive and parking is valet only in that building. Seems rather dead since everyone living there is a business person staying for only certain amount of time...

If the rent isnt a prob for you and you dont have a car it seems optimal.

Anyone going to purchase the 2010 noteset?

I'm kind of leary b/c 200 bucks is a lot of money and I'm not sure how much last year's notes will correlate with this year's lectures. Are we going to have the same professors?

Here is the e-mail in case anyone didn't get it:

Hello first years!

My name is Drew Falconer, one of your T2 orientation leaders, and I'm writing you with something sweet we're doing for you. When we looked back at our first year, we thought, "What can we do for the T1s that we wish someone would've done for us?" And here's what we came up with, two things that were offered to us that we're passing on to you, but we've redone and revamped them and they now rock your socks off. We're talking about completed POs and detailed Class Notes which we've spent all summer putting together for you, which any T2 will recommend you all get, because they will make your first year sooo much more manageable. In short, we're offering you our entire 1st year, exactly what you're about to go through, as a resource because we only wish that this level of attention to detail and extra help had been offered to us. This is what we've got for ya:
Detailed, completed Anatomy Performance Objectives (POs) - When you start anatomy, you will be given a thick course packet for each block chock-block full of learning objectives/questions that are in essence, everything you need to know to ace Gross Anatomy. The problem we found was that the performance objectives were so thick and detailed, we would spend all our time trying to research and answer all the questions, that there was little time left afterwards to study and absorb the information. So we put together detailed, question-by-question completed POs that are money. Literally, the POs were all many of us studied for Anatomy, and we did extremely well. Even if you want to do the POs yourself, I'd still recommend purchasing a completed set from us to use as a resource on all the questions that you can't find the answer to. And once crunch time hits before a test and you're way behind on the POs, you can always use these as a backup because they rock. We also highlight what information was most important on the tests, how detailed we need to know certain things, etc. Straight up, everyone should buy these, as they are truly a must-have. The price is $50 for three blocks of Anatomy, all done.

Detailed Class Notes - We also compiled for you a detailed set of class notes for every lecture you will attend during your entire first year. These notesets go beyond just a verbatim reiteration of the lecture (which is also included) and into explanations, references, and a complete view of the lecture as well as answered questions, practice tests, pictures, diagrams, and more. These notes have been prepared by a selected few official note-takers whose job it has been this past year to compile these notesets after the lectures as if they were teaching the information. Fall and Spring semesters, all 6 classes, all 7 blocks, these class notes will serve you very well as a resourse to clarify foggy ideas, to answer questions, and to be there in case you just don't feel like going to class one day. We designed these to supplement class so well that missing a lecture is no problem with our notes. I occasionally missed classes mainly to study instead of sitting in lecture, and these notes allowed me to stay at the top of the class. They are also great to follow along with in class when you do attend, so that you can actually focus on the material being taught and not have to frantically try and take notes (we give you margins for that!) For your entire first year, every class, both semesters, every lecture detailed and explained, only $150. This is a phenomenal deal.
We're taking pre-orders on these packets, almost 3,000 pages of gold, so that we can have it all ready to give to you at orientation. If you are interested, please drop us an email at
[email protected] or respond to this email and tell us what you'd like and how you'd like to pay. You can pay us in two ways, mail us a check written out to NoteService2010 to the address at the bottom of this email, or even better, go to the following web link on our class' noteservice website where you can pay via paypal or credit card. At the following link, you will see your options under "Class of 2011, First Year Medical Students". Just add what you want to cart and then "view cart" to checkout.

http://www.noteservice2010.com/purchase/purchase.htm

Get ready, the first year is amazing... hard, but so worth it. And the best advice I can give you as one who just did it is to get these two resources to minimize the busy work! They're the reason many of us rocked our 1st year, and we've made them even better so that you can do the same.

Any questions you may have about ANYTHING, feel free to email me personally or any of the T2 orientation leaders.

Thanks and congrats on making it in!

Im probably not going to get it unless I really need it, but I have friends that are upperclassmen that will probbaly sell it to me cheaper or give it to me. Ill probably get it if I realize that I really dont want to/need to go to lectures, but otherwise Ill be most likely taking my own notes. Holden- we had a good game of phone tag down in NOLA lol

Brandon,

I'm putting you on notice now...

I won't let you avoid me anymore come August.

Do any of the 'old' kids have any commentary on getting the note set? Is it essential or just helpful? Thanks and I am excited to meet you all!

Anyone here (im looking at u holden) want to be my casino buddy? Im big on roulette and have made a pretty penny from it, but Id like to hit up the holdem tables too :D

Harrah's will be my downfall.

I don't see how the med students are able to stay away.

I bought the old POs for anatomy and it was worth it. The first block I had great intentions of doing them all myself but I always ran out of time and didn't finish. Then I bought the POs and it definitely helped. I found trying to do them myself was very time-consuming and low-yield for the amount of time it took.

I didn't buy the old notesets last year, but I can tell you (as a notetaker for NoteService) that our notes are really good. They saved my ass numerous times this year. We spend a lot of time on them and they're very complete (notes, diagrams, things like when the professor says it will be on the test...). I'll ask Drew if he could maybe send a sample noteset or something so you could see what they're like.

Rebectar,

A sample noteset would be awesome. Maybe 1 day's lecture? Would that be too much?

RollWave,

Pretty much everything. Craps, Baccarat, Blackjack, Slots (Wheel of Fortune), No-limit, etc.
