I am considering Tulane, GW and the U of Southern California for an MPH with a concentration in international health. Can anyone give me advice as far as which program they think is best for international health? Anything in particular I should know about any of these schools/programs?
Thanks!

Hi kcmph,
I got my MPH from GW--I had actually been accepted in International Health program but I switched to Epidemiology by the end of 1st semester because I realized that my interests were more in Epi than in Intl Health.

The Global Health program is going through many changes. By the time I finished my 1st year, lot of my friends from Global Health were unsatisfied with the program and regretted their decision of being in that program--lot of them switched to Epi due to that. They thought that the program needed to be much stronger and they felt that they didn't learn anything new that would help them when they graduated. However, the good part is that the Dean is doing everything to make the program stronger and always has time to listen to her students. The new professors in Global Health are wonderful--and although the progress is slow, I think in few yrs, the program will become much stronger and much better.

Does this help? if you have more questions, feel free to PM me. 🙂

Thanks so much!! That definetly helps as far as gauging GW. I would actually be going in in the fall of 2007, so will probably steer away from the program.
Does anyone have any thoughts on Tulane and/or USC?
Thanks again!!

I started at Tulane in int'l health in 2000 and like another poster, switched to epidemiology. I wasn't particularly impressed with the rigor of the int'l health curriculum. There were lots of int'l students and a lot of opportunities to make contacts but having previously spent 3 years in various countries in Africa I wasn't learning much I didn't already know.

I'm not familiar with USC or GW. I did do my PhD at Univ. of WA in epidmiology and got a certificate in international health there. The int'l health MPH program is small, growing and challenged me much more than the Tulane program, so I'd recommend considering UW. They just got a large grant from the Gate Foundation and started the Dept. of Global Health.

Best of luck.

I went to to Tulane as an undergrad and took some courses at Tulane's SPH. I was accepted to get my MPH there but coming straight out of undergrad I did not feel like their program would leave me with a "skill" so to speak after coming out of undergrad.

I am now and MPH student at Emory in a joint degree between the department of Global Health and the department of Environmental and Occupational Health. I love it so far and I'm really happy with the program (though I've only been here since August!).
