My heart goes out to Sondra and everyone else who has gone through this terrible storm.

I have posted in the Lounge in my Katrina thread sticky about MedicallyBlond's idea to offer phone calls for those who need them.

I don't know if this will even be possible, because if those who need to make phone calls don't have internet acccess there is no way for them to realize we are offering to make phone calls for them.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

I live (lived?) in New Orleans and am currently applying at Tulane. It is doubtful that anyone will be allowed to stay in the city for at least a matter of weeks, and I would imagine that the city will be crippled for at least months. The latest I have heard is that they will allow residents back in to the city maybe as early as the weekend, but they want people to survey the damage, take their belongings, and then leave for another MONTH.

Tulane Ave. is not too close to the UNDERGRAD campus, but the medical school and hospital are right on Tulane in downtown New Orleans. Tulane hospital and Charity hospital have been closed due to generator failures and flooding. As of Tuesday there was about a foot of water in the area with levels rising. Many homes of my friends are in about ten-twelve feet of water. Don't know anything about my own place or my truck...

For those of us applying to Tulane, I would imagine that this will dramatically delay the process. I would recommend trying to contact admissions via email next week, and if anyone hears differently, please post here. I can't imagine interviews being held until October or November at the earliest.

They're going to bus a large group of the Superdome evacuees to Houston to the Astrodome....it's been a while since the Astrodome was used as a rescue facility.

Text message

Cellphone users who share the 504 area code have had difficulty contacting each other in the aftermath of the hurricane. Here's a solution: Text message family and friends to stay in touch.

It works. I am currently txting someone who's in MS to give her info about what is going on.

Some have suggested that once the administration dept at Tulane get back their sanity and foothold, they'll start interviews off-site. Has this ever happened with other schools? High probability?

This doesn't quite seem fair, does it?

400 of the Tulane undergrad students are being hosted at my school, SMU, in Dallas! They got here this morning, and our school is giving them a free meal plan and dorms. They're even offering to enroll them for the fall semester, even though we started classes on 8/18. I can't even begin to imagine what it must be like for them.

I dont if this has been posted yet but this is off www.aamc.org

Hurricane Katrina Update for Medical Students
Tulane Update
AAMC staff have talked by telephone with senior Tulane University School of Medicine administrators this morning (September 1, 2005). They have requested that the following information be provided to all Tulane University medical students:

Tulane University School of Medicine senior administrative staff are in discussion with their counterparts at Houston-area medical schools about these schools assisting Tulane in continuing to provide medical education for Tulane students in all four years of medical education. Tulane officials also hope that similar plans for Tulane residents can be developed and implemented.

Tulane administrators are currently in different cities, and they hope to have a face-to-face meeting in Houston as soon as possible to develop final plans for Tulane medical students, including plans for housing in Houston. They request that Tulane students monitor the AAMC Web site (www.aamc.org) for updated information, but indicate that more definitive information will most likely not be available until early in the week of September 5, 2005.

LSU Update
As of Wednesday evening, August 31, 2005, the LSU-New Orleans School of Medicine Web site contains the following announcement:

“Please be assured that the LSU School of Medicine is intact and working to resume classes. The Health Sciences Center has set up an Administrative Office in the LSU System Office building on the LSU campus. The phone number is (225) 578-7269. The fax number is (225) 578-5524.

“We have made arrangements to hold classes at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center at 6400 Perkins Road in Baton Rouge. We expect to resume classes within the next three weeks.”

At the moment, school administrators have told us their first priority is the safety and security of their patients, students, residents, and staff. They are focused at this time on emergency operations relating to patients and the health and well being of the citizens of New Orleans.

The AAMC will post additional information of interest to Tulane and LSU-New Orleans medical students on this Web site as it becomes available from these medical schools.

Is that for real??? Crazy. FWIW, I saw both pictures, I think on the New York Times, site, listed as looters. I can't believe that one source has that difference, though.

I posted in the other thread that I got a forwarded email from Baton Rouge in which a woman said that Tulane Med was thinking of opening up in a month or two, I guess for 1st and 2nd years?, in Baton Rouge. I have no clue if this is a complete rumor or whether it is based on any sort of fact, but I thought I'd pass it along.
