I wanted to start a thread for those who are considering Tulane because I definitely am! I am in for Global Community Health and Behavior Science. Feel free to post!

I haven't *officially* heard from them but I was approved by the department a few weeks ago and today I got my number for financial aid and all that.

I really like the program and Tulane in general. The 1.5 years vs 2 years is a big plus. I'm in Global Health Systems and Development but I'm thinking about changing it to Epi. You can change there easily (which is another big plus).

Hi! I just officially accepted Tulane, so I will definitely be there in the fall 🙂 I'm doing the MSPH in Parasitology and Tropical Medicine. Have either of you visited the campus? I'm hoping to go later in March 🙂

Did anyone know there was a supplemental FA application? I just found out 😱 lol.

I haven't been there but my parents used to go to NOLA all the time. I would need a plane to get there so I'm going to wait to see what schools I could afford to go to before I start booking plane tickets to visit places.

Hey! I haven't been there yet but I'm a nerd and was looking at student reviews of other schools online and everyone talked about how nice everyone is in NOLA and how they didn't see it at other schools they visited. I definitely want to visit but I am also a plane ride away so I want to see what would be the smartest financially but I would love to go here. I looked at all the pictures of the campus and it looks so beautiful.

Currently an MSPH in Parasitology and Trop Med at Tulane if anyone has any questions. :hello:

Ooo, awesome! I do have a question for you HSUReddie. I've gotten 3 different answers as to how long the MSPH in Parasitology and Trop Med program actually is. How long would you say people usually take?

I would say most people could get it finished in three semesters (plus maybe one summer). You could do it in a full four semesters and forgo the summer thing. I also know a few people doing that. There's also a couple of us who are doing the entire thing in a year. I started in June of last year, and I'll finish at the end of July of this year.

So, that kind of probably gives you the same answer you already had, but the truth is that it really is all over the board. I would say majority probably do it in three semesters and a summer though. But you can really do it at a pace to fit your needs. I was hoping to matriculate to med school in August, so now that I'm in, I'm glad I already buckled down and decided to do it in a year.

WOOT WOOT!!! Just got into the Nutrition (and Maternal and Child Health) Program! 😀 Still waiting to hear back from other schools, but since I'm planning on doing the MI Program I'm pretty much sold on Tulane. Plus I'm a native, making the choice that much easier.

@ging

What's your program?

Congrats guys! Glad to see people are posting on this thread again.

I am in for the same as you! I didn't want to pick community, MCH, or nutrition so I just left it general. I am between Tulane and Emory but I really really like the research and course selections of Tulane better. Emory I applied for BSHE but in order to take MCH classes I would have to apply for a certificate whereas at Tulane I could pick and choose. I have never been to NOLA so I should visit before making a decision. I can make a facebook page at lunch today! I'll post the link on here.

Congrats again guys!

@ Suf

Awesome! 😀

People that dislike New Orleans don't exist...

I was accepted into Global Community as well. Does the department assist you with employment? What do you plan to do with your MPH once you graduate?

Yes I agree. How are employment opportunities? This is a concern of mine as I felt like public health was lacking in people going into it but it appears that people are having a hard time finding jobs.

I have no idea how public health employment opportunities are in NOLA/Tulane. Location is very important. I'm really considering going to NYC where NYU has a MPH program that is accredited by the CEPH. Having a job is imperative you know...

I agree that it's probably best to go where you want to work after program completion.

By the way, you made it sound like Tulane isn't accredited.:scared: You know that it is accredited though, right?😉 👍

Good luck with your choosing! There's probably no wrong choice between NYU and Tulane.:smack:

I feel like it's 50/50 as far as staying where you are after program completion. I want to go on to more school so I definitely would want to go to a different area. But NYU is a great school as well and you will definitely have plenty of opportunities!

I know for the most part in Trop Med students just get jobs with the department or medical school in research labs - for employment while in school - and the majority of us go on to do MD's or PhD's. We're sort of a weird group I guess.

I am in a Global and Community Health class (outside of the core required one) this semester though, and they have speakers come in from different applicable public health organizations in the city. There really seems to be a lot going on. And New Orleans is definitely a city in need of creative public health strategies in my opinion.

And in addition to the accredited comment, I'd like to add Tulane is the oldest school of public health in the United States. 😎 👍

I know Tulane is CEPH accredited. That's why I applied there and was accepted as well. This was illustrated in my first comment. There's no reason for you to be condescending.

Sorry about that, I didn't mean to come across as condescending. The way your post was phrased led me to believe that you didn't think Tulane was accredited. I was just trying to be helpful.

I just got in! Department of global community health and behavioral science!

I love the program at Tulane, but I'm still waiting to hear back from everywhere I applied first. I'm also concerned about whether the high cost of tuition will be worth it. Any current students care to weigh in on that?

Hey current students!

I'm currently looking at my options regarding loans for next year. How easy would you say it is to get a job on/near campus? Also, for the jobs on campus, do they typically pay? Trying to figure out how to defray costs as much as possible >>

I don't know what kind of a job you are looking for, but the campus is right on Canal St. (a major avenue of the city) so there is a ton of restaurants, bars, hotels, and even a shopping center and casino within walking distance. I've also heard there's a lot of money being put into developing that part of the city as a center for science. That means there might be some interesting science related job opportunities to be had as well.

I'm not a current student, but I hope that helps a little bit. Hopefully a current student can give you a better idea of the job opportunities available from Tulane. I know I'd be interested to hear that as well.

Has anyone heard anything about any funding from Tulane? It's really frustrating. I submitted my financial aid supplemental thing and it was received 3/4. It was supposed to be processed within 10 days. I work during their hours so I can't call. I've emailed several times over the last few weeks without a response. Tulane is the last school that can sway me from U of M but this is ridiculous =/

A couple of (maybe) obvious questions for you guys:

-when do we have to let Tulane know our decision? I've looked everywhere for a date and can't find one. two of the other programs I got in have a date of April 15, so I guess I have to decide by then, but wanted to make sure!

-how long do most students take to complete the program? It says the program is 45 credits- is it normal for grad students to do 15 hours a semester and complete it in 3 semesters?

Is there a day we should let them know by though...? Does the program fill up and not let you in if you don't get back to them by a certain date?
Sorry, these are questions that I could call and ask the school, it's just easier to shoot them off here!
The only reason I'm wondering is because I'm still waiting for another school and I just want to make sure I don't lose my spot!

Hi guys,

First time poster here. I recently applied to GWU and Tulane's MPH (global health) program. I'm really more interested in the Master's International program. According to SOPHAS, my application was mailed out today. However, I e-submitted my application (all transcripts/grades/letter of recs were in) on 4/15. I see here that most of y'all applied much earlier in the application cycle than I did. Are people still likely to be accepted this late in the game? I felt pretty good about my application, but am now worried that I applied too late.

Stats if you're interested:

GPA: 3.68 (from a top 5 public university)
Major/Minor: Biology/Chemistry
GRE: High 150s on both V and Q, (I had to take the test last minute (2 days to prepare) and haven't received official scores yet.)
Extracurriculars: Lots of them (but most are not related to public health). 2 years of undergraduate research in a microbiology lab.

Thanks, guys! Congrats to everyone who got accepted and good luck to those still waiting!

A question for those who got into Tulane MPH/trop-med programs: what kind of GPA/GRE scores did you have?

I'm an MSPH in trop med...

GRE was a 150 VR and a 153 QR. 4 on writing.

3.82 cumulative GPA. 3.73 science GPA. 4.00 everything else.

For MPH admissions at Tulane, how much weight is given to GPA/GRE scores, how much weight is given to letters of recommendation and how much weight is given to the extracurriculars?

Catria-

I'll be attending the MSPH Parasitology/Trop med program next year, I had 167V/159Q/4.0 W, and 3.0 GPA (And majored in History)

Hello Everyone,

I've been accepted into a one-year master program at Tulane. I'm looking for a clean (male or female) roommate. Please pvt me if you are interested.

Is there a lot of failed premeds in trop med? I always had the impression that the MSPH in trop med was filled with failed premeds...

It seems like my trop med classes were primarily premed, med student, or doctors. I took two trop med classes even though I was EHS.

I got in to Health Systems and Development(GHSD), however I wish to change to Biostatistics. So is there any chance that I can change my concentration to bios?

Yes. There is a form on the website. You can also complete a certificate in biostats if that will suit your needs.

Tulane students-I am very interested in Trop Med but I am wondering what are the employment options after graduating from Trop Med? Or do most people just go on to med school afterwards?

MPH students in the trop med department are about 50/50, or thereabouts, pursuing medical school afterwards. I'm told that this used to be much higher, to the extent that every MPH student used to be eyeing medical school. However, that hasn't been true/relevant in a few years. We had a new chair come in few years ago who really refocused our department on research into tropical diseases. Of the ones who aren't looking at med school it's sort of hard to say what they do because a lot of them have very different career goals. Some plan to continue in academia (PhD) and in general those who do were very successful- the one who did this last year was taken by a translational medicine program at UT with full funding. Others are more into careers in public health or labs, and are more about seeing what opportunities come up. Some students have trouble finding employment, but I don't see anyone from this year's graduating cohort complaining about employment on my facebook feed, even if I don't know what they're all doing. I heard some kvetching by this year's graduates about the job market, but I also don't see reason to believe this goes beyond what happens every year to every graduating class at every institution.

Two relevant things came up when students were interviewed this year for our regional accreditation review. First, there's poor job placement for all the MPH programs at Tulane with the exception of the MHA program. Not that you can't get a job, but Tulane isn't doing as much work as it could/should be to connect graduates with employers. Second, a lot of students come into the trop med program thinking that we're a strongly clinical or microbiological program. This is less of an issue for PhD students because in 5 years we can get a lot more experience under our belts and also have a lot more freedom to self-direct our careers. Our classes are really an even-parts mix of clinical science, public health, and microbiology. Labs in our department split roughly between microbiology and public health. That said, you can more broadly divide our labs between the mosquito labs and the malaria labs. If vector control and malaria are things that interest you, this department is a great place to be.

I strongly considered the Tropical Med track, not as a pre-med, but as pre-vet. Ultimately I chose environmental health though, because I felt it had more opportunities as a "backup" if I didn't get in to vet school. A lot of TM students are medical-oriented (premed, med students, doctors, nurses, PAs, and so on) but not all. However, I see the career path for a TM degree holder to be iffy and uncertain if you don't have a professional degree/training to go along with it (or you get a PhD rather than just a masters)...hence why I didn't choose it.

I really appreciate your post! I am considering applying for the Tulane MPH program this fall but am worried about job placement/career opportunities. I have never been to New Orleans and not familiar with any public health organizations there.
