so, on my interview day, father don said that MD/MPH would give tulane students a boost when applying for residency. MD/MPH almost always looks better on paper compared to just regular MDs.

Whoa. That match list is sick!

Its not just WHAT they matched in, but also WHERE...

Ortho at JHU, Barnes Jewish (aka WashU), Jackson Memorial...

Derm at Mayo-Scottsdale? ENT at Baylor?

Holy Cow!

Just got my MD/MPH info also...when did they say finaid was coming?

Can people talk a little more about MPH - i just would like to hear more. That packet was not really helpful.....are there any current Tulane students on SDN that could answer this a little more? Also, has anyone else heard about fin aid or housing yet? And lastly, in terms of federal loans, does anyone know what the max loan amount is per year? It seems higher at Tulane than other schools....

Thanks

This website should help out: http://www.sph.tulane.edu/mdmph/ as well as the public health website http://www.sph.tulane.edu/ and also the catalogue for the public health school explains each department and class descriptions http://www.sph.tulane.edu/main/academics/catalog.htm . I am currently an MPH student, so let me know if you have any questions, although I don't have too many specifics on the combined MD/MPH program and am in the process of finding out more about it myself.

Basically you choose one of the concentrations - epidemiology, international health, environment, tropical medicine, biostatistics, epidemiology or community health sciences and you are responsible for completing the 5 core classes (biostats, epidemiology, health systems management, environment, social & behavioral aspects of global public health) plus the medical school requirements (which I think you take anyway) and the classes in your department plus an MPH rotation and a capstone. If you click on program requirements on the MD/MPH page and then click your interest, it will show you when you are supposed to take which classes.

Core classes can be taken in the summer and also online. The classes in your department can sometimes be taken in the summer or med students have wed and fri afternoons off after the first semester of the first year and can take classes then.

The capstone is flexible but is supposed to be work/project experience in the public health field. There are lots of international opportunities (or were, I'm not sure if they'll stay) and also the capstone can be combined with the rotation.

As far as financial aid, we're charged per unit - something like $750/unit, which can get pricey.

I like the classes a lot. We talk a lot about disease but in the context of social/political/environmental aspects. There are a ton of returned peace corps volunteers, clinicians and international students learning there, so it's a great environment.

Everything is a little different, though. The first floor was gutted and there's no student lounge or anyplace to eat within the area. The elevators aren't working properly and there are more budget constraints which I'm sure will become more apparent later - they're thinking of cutting international classes, etc. However, it still has a great feel to it and so far there are lots of opportunities to be involved in rebuilding and the community.

Let me know if you have any questions.

So I have been waiting around to hear something from Tulane...finally I asked and they said that my LOR from my school were never sent!! After I went to the head of the LOR committee and brought him the new address ASAP after it was released. I was told that it was already taken care of!! I am so upset. They said to go ahead and have them faxed over, but its so late now! Its not as if this was my only choice, Im just frustrated that it wasnt taken care of! I hope no one else at my school had this prob!

Hey Everyone,
Just a note on the MD/MPH. If you do the combined degree, you pick up the same degree (MPH) I did for a whole lot less than just doing the MPH. I think its like 10K extra for the dual degree and trust me I spent way more than that. Congrats to everyone who got in I think I'm done waiting on TU, but I have no hard feeling, I love the school. As far as the MPH goes, I did mine in Epidemiology, and the course load can be pretty heavy, we only had 1 or people try to tackle it with med school. Most of the med students I knew did Community Health. Either way, I would reccomend going for both if you'll be @TU.

just for anyone out there who's still waiting to hear back from tulane, i got a call today for an interview.

congrats gintien.

did y'all get your acceptance letters sent to your preferred or permanent addresses? mine was sent last tuesday but i still don't have it.

Congrats on your interview! 🙂

I haven't gotten my MPH/MD combined degree info packet yet, I'm a little worried.

AMCAS preferred here, but my friend's was sent to his parents' address (permanent), so I'm really not sure what they do.

Sorry to be of absolutely no help whatsoever!
🙄

does anyone know more about the MD/MBA program? I just know that you apply during your first year after taking the GMAT but is it basically an automatic acceptance like the MPH program? thanks

It took me a very long time to receive the actual acceptance letter....the whole USPS system down here has been sloppy and slow since the hurricane.

actually, i have no idea if they're still doing this, but they obv. have in the past... spots have been extremely limited and soon-to-be-T1s have fought over them. One of my friends who's a current T1 took histo and she said it seriously cut down on her workload... if I'm at tulane next year, I would definitely opt for this!

Ah, the truth comes out, I hadn't heard that. Good to know though. There are lots of downsides though - you still have to pay full tuition during the next year, can't do public health classes and it eats up a summer. I'd do it though...maybe I should remove the post 😉

I haven't posted much on here, but I read what everyone has to say quite often so I though I'd add what little info I have to offer. Last Tuesday I called and spoke to Susana to see if my application was complete. She said that it was and that she would call me back later in the day. A couple of hours later she called to offer me an interview that Thursday. I went to NO and had a fantastic interview experience. Dr. Beckman and Dr. Pisano were really great people to talk to. So today I emailed Dr. Beckman a little note to tell her thanks for the interview and how much I enjoyed it. She emailed back maybe 15 minutes later telling me that I have been accepted. I couldn't be happier, the people there are great and I really liked what they had to say about the future of the school. I do have an interview tommorrow at LSU-NO, which I will still give my full consideration, but I was very impressed with Tulane. I don't know if this info will help anyone but I really just like telling everybody I can that I've been accepted!

CONGRATULATIONS!!! THAT'S SOOOO AWESOME!!!

OUt of curiousity, who's susana? Do you have to ask for her specifically when you call, to get to talk to her? I'm really interested in teh school, and would liek to know if i could get an interview....

Were you calling for status, or to see if you were complete? Did you snsed stuff just recently? Thanks, as your response could help a prospective applicant like me! 🙂 again, awesome news!!!

Congrats MSTALD! Susana is the person who coordinates all the paper-work for admissions, etc. I'm not sure what her official title is. Her name is Susana Vargas and she has her own personal telephone number, though I don't have it anymore, sorry! 🙁

For anyone who interviewed while they were doing it at Baylor and who hasn't actually been to Tulane itself yet, I e-mailed Dr. Beckman and this is what she had to say:

"We won't have a formal second look weekend. I would advise coming when convenient for you, but definitely towards March or preferably April. Call the Admissions office ahead and ask for Karen Joia who can arrange a tour or visit for you."

It seems like most of you on here interviewed after they moved back to Tulane, but for anyone who didn't, hope this is helpful!

Thanks! That's VERY helpful!

Hey y'all. I just interviewed on Thursday and I have to say that Tulane is one of the most interesting real-people oriented schools I've ever seen. Seems like they really dont want a bunch of "gunners" there, which is great- they're interested in having actual humans in their classes instead of a bunch of grade-grubbing drones. I really really liked the feel of the school. My interviewers were super-cool - one in particular, Dr. Carr, a psychiatrist, was just a very real up-front guy (it was like we were talking in a pub- he started telling me about good bars around the area). Dr Beckman is such a sweetheart, and very positive. Good energy. I loved my experience there. If you interview, just relax and have a good time. Awesome school. I am excited to have the opportunity to re-build with a group of interesting, compassionate, talented people. What a cool place. 👍

warning for any recent interviewees:
they send their decision letters to the preferred address ON THE COPY OF THE AMCAS THAT YOU SENT IN WITH YOUR SECONDARY. so if you update it electronically later on, they will not know. i had to learn this the hard way. they sent my letter to the address at berkeley i no longer live at. eventhough I changed my amcas they don't know that = disaster.

You hit the nail on the head. My student interviewer said that one of the reasons they began doing student interviews was so that the atmosphere of Tulane would stay the same--laid back and low key. They didn't want the administration to change the feel of the school. This is why they are so big on making sure that they accept people who are a "good fit."

Agreed. My interview was in Houston and I think you could really tell the Tulane students from the Baylor students. The Baylor students would pass by you and not say one word, even if you looked lost, but the Tulane students stopped and talked to us for 30-45 minutes. They were so friendly, I think that's what I liked best about Tulane.

After interviewing other places and seeing how impersonal and bland the students and faculty could be, and then seeing all the tulane students and teachers be so upbeat and eager to get back to NOLA even though Baylor was an amazing facility really spoke volumes about the school itself. They acted like real people who laugh and actual have social lives outside of class. All involved always tried to put the interviewees at ease, not on edge. I am equally happy to hear people who share the same sentiments and are ready to take on this challenge.

Dr. Logan was the older gentleman who also was interviewing. Sweet guy. Graduated from Tulane 60 years ago.

The interviewers were all volunteering their time, too.

Anyone from the Pharm program have anything to say? You guys are there... What do you think about the instruction?

I was wondering if anyone knows if Tulane is going to be offering Histology the summer before MS1 (this summer!) like they have in the past...It would be a good class to knock out early

and is anyone going to be visiting again in spring? I'd love to check out the place or meet some of you. Orbitz has some great 'go for a weekend' flights to MSY (new orleans).

I've been looking into the histo thing, haven't had much luck....they usually keep this on the DL though, so that is to be expected. Will post if I can dig up any info.

Yeah.. I spoke with my sis (MS1) and she said that she hasn't heard anything either...Someone had brought it up in interviews with me so I thought I'd post it....but I did hear thought that the official med school was going to start in NO in July (I know admissions are back) so I don't know if that would be enough time to take Histo.
