Hey Mota --

The undergrad gym is pretty nice, and I know med students who use it regularly. For undergrads, we have automatic membership (it's covered under some mandatory fee), but I'm not sure about med students. The gym is usually pretty crowded, but there's a decent weight room and quite a few treadmills/ellipticals. I've also heard that there's going to be a student rec in the new Tulane Med building on Poydras, so that should be really convenient for the med students downtown. Hope that helps!

I am 99.9% sure the med students get automatic access to Reily (the uptown gym). There is a shuttle you can take for free between the med school campus and the uptown campus.

I just got a rejection letter from Tulane yesterday. I didn't read it through (and now it's sitting at home) but if I remember correctly from the quick glance, it seemed that the reason for rejection was that they are no longer interviewing-- like they've filled the class or something. Anyway, I'm not devesated about not getting to go there because I received my first acceptance last week to Mizzou, but what irks me more is that Tulane had lost my application in the hurricane, and didn't bother to tell me, but DID deposit my check the day the levees broke. So I just found out about the mishap about 2 weeks ago, sent in everything again, with a cover letter explaining the situation and reiterating my interest in the school. I feel like if they hadn't lost my application, I would have been considered earlier and could have gotten an interview. What was the $100 application fee for? I want to ask for it back, 'cause I need it for my mizzou deposit. Is this just my bitterness talking? Or am I justified?

sorry to hear that ahum. chances are it is bitterness talking, though. i know somebody who got an invite today. so they definitely looked at your application and chose to reject you for some reason or another. maybe they thought you wouldn't really go to Tulane. or maybe they had accepted too many females already. who knows. but rest assured that your application DID get looked at.

Yeah, I hate to bear bad news, but when I called the admissions office about a scheduling a second (or first?) visit to the school, the Suzana V. tried to put me hold, but failed, and proceeded to say "Ok Will (not my name), when do you want to schedule your interview?"...

So, they definitely are interviewing and they probably are scheduling them for people who call and show interest, so if you really want a tulane interview, I would suggest calling Suzana V. asap.

what do you mean "second (or first?)" visit? were you going for a second look weekend?

alas, I suppose my numerous transcript updates and glowing letter of interest detailing all the reasons why I wanted to attend Tulane was understood to mean I'm not interested.

ahum, i don't mean to be an ass but they also have their own criteria for admissions. who knows what it is, you know? i've showed LOTS of interest in several schools to no avail. you're sounding very self-righteous in your posts, assuming that just because you showed a lot of interest you DESERVE an invite. if that was the case at all schools i would have a lot more invites. you feel me? don't take what i'm saying the wrong way, i just want you to take a step back and try to rationalize your so-far emotional reaction. you win some, you lose some.

I'm sorry about your rejection, I could have predicted that my post would have caused some spite. Sorry for that.

I said "second (or first)" visit b/c I interviewed at Baylor in October, so I haven't actually visited the school yet, so I dunno. I guess its my '1st'.

Congrats on the Mizzou acceptance!!

no problem. With so many people griping on these here SDN forums, I guess I was just shocked by the immediate negative response I received (*ahem* mota!) and went on the defensive. Before I heard from Mizzou, I was in despair at my meager 3 interviews, and was intensely angry at Tulane when I finally found out that they lost my application. I really thought I had a good shot at getting at least an interview at Tulane based on the fact that my roommate was accepted last year, and we had very similar numbers. And now I'm playing the "what if they had reviewed my application earlier, would they have decided differently?" Blah blah. I know it's a crap shoot, I know you win some you lose some, I'm not being self-righteous, I just really need $100 to save my spot at Mizzou! And I feel robbed by Tulane.

ah well, I'm done here.

Werd.

I just wanted to clear it up that they def. are still giving out interview invites, as to not cause anyone else who is in limbo to lose all hope.

I just talked to someone else who was given an interview today... so, there's definitely still some movement going on at Tulane.

hey goose-d - i didn't call susana, but i sent her an in-depth email tonight (not too long though) - i figured i'd send her an email rather than call since i've never had contact with her before - you think that was a good idea? thanks 🙂

Susana will easily brush you off the phone if you are not very assertive, so the email may be better, depends on the person I guess.

I agree with this; email may be a better way to get in touch with her. I'm not sure though, just b/c all of my correspondence with her has been by phone.

To be honest, I've found that most of the time Suzana is an angel on the phone, othertimes it can be obvious how stressful her job is... totally understandle.

Good luck!

Not that this is helpful information but I just spoke with the Tulane admissions lady in NOLA and she said that Tulane got around 7,200 appilications this year, which is an increase from 2004. She also said that there were many less withdrawls as compared to other years. It appears that the school is more in demand than before. Just thought it was worth posting.

So what have you guys heard about that tornado that hit New Orleans today? This is getting kind of ridiculous...

Yeah, I called and heard the same thing! That's promising, although at the same time, there's a chance that it's made up of applicants who are borderline elsewhere who think they have a better shot this year, given what's happened? Either way, this special year is definitely going to cause an admissions nightmare... in terms of predicting yield, how many acceptances to hand out, how many people will accept the offer, etc. If interviewees are chosen based on their interest in the school (as opposed to randomly from a pile meeting cut-offs), it follows that yield is going to be higher. Interviewees who are more interested in the school (and have been proactive in securing an interview) are more likely to accept Tulane's offer, something the Deans might not have taken into account, especially if someone else is making interview offers. This means that the person offering interviews and the person admitting people have to be on the same page. Imagine if, out of 300 offers made, 200-250 accepted the offer! Not very likely, but just something I was thinking about.

On a completely different note, which budget airlines fly to NOLA?

southwest. ya, the admissions nightmare you outlined could be very real. i'm interested to see how it plays out. out of the 3 people i know who were accepted from my interview day, the other 2 are definitely going and i'm almost certain i am. hmm...

That storm was crazy......the lightning strikes were so close together that it was light outside like in the middle of the day (this was at around 2:40am).

😱 I heard it damaged the airport quite a bit. Hopefully nobody got hurt. It was probably good (in a way) that it happened at night when less people would be outside.

The best part was, the vibration from the crazy thunder caused the fire alarm in Phelps (one of the dorms) to go off (...or so I hear). So all those kids were running out of the building in the pouring rain. Then the building lost power. Of course, my apartment window faces Phelps... I couldn't figure out what was more annoying, the scary thunder or the fire alarm 😛 It's good to be back!

I know they have fail, pass, high pass, and honors in classes, which equates to a number grade, but this was pre-katrina, they had gone to p/f for this year temporailily, and I believe they are going back to the grading system next year.

thanks for the info. but i was referring to the idea that some schools rank their students #1 through whatever based on performance in med school. a lot of schools don't and i would expect that tulane doesn't because they try to limit competition as much as possible. i'm not sure whether or not they do though. anyone know?

All schools keep a rank based on raw numerical percentages... to help determine scholarships, etc. Whether this information is made available to those who need to know, that's another story. My friend knew she was in the top third because she received some scholarship, but wasn't told her rank, and this information isn't released to the external world. The Dean's letter that Dr Kahn writes for each graduating student is extensive and long, and he really makes an effort to get to know each student in depth and interviews everyone about career choices before he writes the thing (or so he told me).

I interviewed on 1/24/06, but still haven't heard anything from them yet. Man, I wish I could just call them and ask "So am I accepted or not?" 😀

i interviewed on 1/9 and STILL haven't gotten my letter. it got lost in the mail and they sent another one but i'm starting to think that one got lost too. luckily i have an e-mail confirmation that i'm in. and a verbal/e-mail agreement is binding enough. or so my law school friends tell me.

That was just a week ago! Chill out! 🙂 It took 7 weeks to get my first acceptance letter (from another school).

Yes, Tulane ranks its students, internally. On your Dean's letter, it's only reported as top third/middle third/bottom third. Or so we're told.

Despite having only P/F grades for first and second years this year, actual numeric scores are still being recorded for internal ranking purposes. Third and fourth years still have grades for rotations.

i actually found out of my acceptance the morning after my interview.

what you can do is get in touch with a lady-- karen digioa. she personally takes care of all the acceptance letters and gets the list of aceptees straight from beckman.

if you call her, she will look for your name on a list.

i had actually gotten worried about my email acceptance, so i called the office. they directed me to karen, who is a very nice lady, who then checked her email forthe list, and told me congratulations.

i got my acceptance letter 4 WEEKS later. it got lost in the mail though so they faxed me a copy and sent me another letter. i got the fax and both acceptance letters in early jan.

Yeah from what I have learned from people down there, the mail system is totally messed up and slow (if at all) right now. I was worried when I sent my acceptence letter back to tulane that it wouldn't get there in time, but it eventually did, and they are well aware of how bad the mail is currently.

theunderdog said:

The morning after?? That's a tad OCD, don't you think? 🙂

As for mailing stuff back, I was advised to fax back my acknowledgement of acceptance, in addition to sending it by mail, just because the mail system is still a little shaky... maybe something that other people can do as well if they're worried about delays.

Yah, by the time I got my acceptance, which was mistakenly mailed to my flooded New Orleans address, it was too late to possible have them get my acknowledgement of the acceptance, so I called them and the let me e-mail it to them. Definitely a good idea as the mail system is crazy screwy . . . I keep on getting the strangest things in the mail here in Connecticut that were mailed to me last august . . . I got a paycheck that expired two months ago and bill from my dentist from august this week!

I sent my acceptance letter via registered mail so that I was sure someone would sign for it. About a week and a half ater I got the little green card that said it got to the address.

i don't know her direct #. i just asked susanna if i could speak to karen joia. she kinda hesitated at first until i told her that dr. beckman had asked me to get in contact with her (which was true, and she hadn't been responding to my e-mails) at which point she immediately put me through to her. they all work on the same floor in a small area so they're definitely in close contact with each other.

alright, i just found out that i got waitlisted at tulane. is there anyway you can find out why you got waitlisted? it really sucks bc i was late for the interview. they said to be there at 8:15am, but i didn't get there until 8:35am. i left baton rouge at 6:00am to give me 2 hours to get there (which usually only takes 1 hour), but i still didn't make it in time. dawm traffic. however, when i got there, dr. beckman wasn't there yet. there was only a medical student there talking to the other interviewees. i found out that she only got there 5 minutes b4 i did. do ya'll think that has anything to do with me not getting accepted? i really want to find out. should i email dr beckman and ask her?

My guess is the class is basically filled and that your lateness had little or nothing to do with their decision. On the bright side, a slightly higher number of people than average who are already accepted may decide to go elsewhere (due to the current situation), so I am assuming your chances of getting in off the wait list are slightly higher than an average year.

its definitely because the class is filled. probably has nothing to do with you at all. you're definitely gonna be high on the waitlist and many people will rescind acceptances so you'll have a good shot of being given a seat. best of luck.

well gameboy,

you asked the right dawg, an educated one. i'm sorry to hear about your waitlist. karen's number and email is [email protected] and 504 988-6660, not respectively.

in all honestly, beckman said that the class had been 2/3 filled when i interviewed back in early december. 100 seats had been taken already. 55 were left. keep in mind that i'm not talking about number of acceptances. i'm talking about number of seats available. there are 155 total roughly in a given year. she said that at the rate of acceptance tulane was going, the class would have been filled by mid-january.

i don't think being late has anything to do with it. frankly, no one remembers that you're late and no one writes it down. the med school in the room you first see makes no evaluations whatsoever.

-underdog

According to my info, there have been 400-500 interviews offered, and 300 acceptances extended to fill the 155 seats. I do believe they are now waitlisting most if not all interviewees.

Oh come on. I got here as fast as I could. I am now sitting in my hotel room in New Orleans...and now I find this out.

AAHHHHHHH. I don't want another waitlist. Let me in! Stupid competitive medical school admissions process. Grrrrrr. 😱 😡 :scared:

P.S. No offense to you, but hopefully, your info is wrong.

Okay. Was a little stressed just then. I'm better now. Whatever will be will be. I'm thinking positive. I love Tulane. Maybe for once a school will love me back. 😛
