Hey, I think I interviewed with you! Were you the only guy with about half a dozen women interviewees? Don't worry ... the wait list will definitely move. Everyone was commiserating about the terrible traffic that morning, so I don't think it hurt you. Good luck. By the way, how did you hear?

No, that wasn't me. I interviewed with three other ppl: two guys and a girl.

Okay, so I'm back from my Tulane interview now. I had two interviewers, and the first one went well, but the second one gave me the stone-face. That threw me off because I was expecting a pleasant conversation, like with the first guy and like everyone has been telling me on here, but nope. So I don't think I did very well, but at least I'll find out for sure soon. Dr. Beckman said they would let us know in 7-10 days.

Med School Applicants Ready to Rebuild

Even though the Tulane School of Medicine is holding classes at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston this academic year, students and teaching faculty will return to New Orleans in July, and applicants for the medical class of 2010 already are flocking to New Orleans for interviews.

"More than 7,000 students have applied for admission to our School of Medicine, and their academic qualifications are similar to that of previous classes," says Paul Whelton, dean of the medical school and senior vice president for health sciences. "This reflects the confidence that applicants and their advisers have in Tulane and the future of healthcare in the city of New Orleans."

This year, the admissions process has become streamlined and more efficient, says Barbara Beckman, assistant dean for admissions. From the end of September through December, interviews with selected applicants were conducted in Houston. Now, interviews are being conducted in New Orleans, although the usual tour of the downtown medical complex has changed.

Last year, Beckman and Marc Kahn, associate dean of admissions and student affairs, interviewed 1,400 applicants. This year, they will interview about 400 applicants through the end of the month, concentrating on those who show a strong interest in New Orleans and its renewal.

"The youth, exuberance and energy of the applicants is delightful--the strongest applicants want to contribute to the rebuilding," Beckman says.

As one applicant from California wrote: "I believe that Tulane University School of Medicine can offer me the best education and training ... Since the Hurricane Katrina catastrophe, my interest in Tulane University School of Medicine has grown stronger. I admire the strength and persistence of the school for standing firm despite the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina. It would be an honor for me to attend a school with beliefs and virtues paralleled to my own. Furthermore, I would like to continue joining in the effort of rebuilding the city of New Orleans." This applicant volunteered for an American Red Cross fundraiser for the Katrina relief effort.

As is the usual practice, more candidates are accepted than the approximately 150 who constitute the incoming medical school class. But this year there has been only a fraction of the typical number of withdrawals, Beckman says. So far, the incoming medical school class will have more men than usual (166 men and 122 women have been accepted). Also, there are more accepted applicants from Louisiana, with 73 from the Pelican State this year compared to 43 Louisianans who were accepted last year.

"We've seen an increase in primary applications to Tulane since Hurricane Katrina," Beckman says. "Our process hasn't been seamless, but that doesn't seem to bother the prospective medical students."
 
I just bit the bullet and called Karen Joia.

First, they have to be nicest admissions staff ever. EVER!

So she said I wasn't admitted, but I was "in the admissions range." Is this what other people are hearing, or is this different from the wait list? She said it's unranked. I was expecting waitlist, or worse, to be honest, so this is good news.

Laisse le bon temps rouler ... maybe!
 
When I interviewed there Dr. Beckman said, that you'd be either accepted, rejected, or acceptence range (waitlist). But I would be very happy about your outcome, getting an interview this year (400 out of over 7000) is close numberwise to an acceptence in a normal year. Being placed on acceptence range is more a comment on people not withdrawing the normal amount, and not your creditentials. You are obviously very qualified but unfortunately they have accepted their quota early and have to wait for people to withdrawl. There is no doubt that if they go to their acceptence range canditdates you will be in a good position. I'd be hopeful.

I was there that day (2/7), but that's not me. 🙂 Dr. Beckman came and said they wanted to take a photo for an article, but they wanted it to be a female applicant "for diversity purposes".

hey tacrum, i am interviewing in a couple of weeks. i was just wondering if your interviews were open or closed file. and good luck, hope you get some good news next week.
 
HA. thats definitely not me (my hair is much redder). but i did interview in that exact same seat with beckman. but she wasn't all up in my face like that. she was behind her desk.

Interviews are closed file at tulane. Good luck. Anyone interviewing at this point will either be waitlisted or rejected. I wish you guys were interviewing with students in Houston, because thats the best part. Eventhough the Baylor students roaming the halls all suck.
 
So, has anyone heard anything about school next year yet? Ive been checking back and forth on the site and they have not really changed much since 12.02....fin aid/price for tuition, housing, etc?

I spoke with a financial aid person last week, they said they were really behind due to "everything" and planned to get the financial aid literature out sometime in february. As far as the other stuff, I do not know.

I am, of course, hoping to hear good news from Tulane, but the class is so full that I'm expecting the waitlist. Man, I really hope they don't reject me. That would suck. A lot. :scared:

They were both closed file, but one of the first things both interviewers asked was "What is your GPA? What is your MCAT?", so I'm not exactly sure what the point of them being closed file is. Maybe to see what you'll emphasize? Well anyway, good luck at your interview. Tulane is a great school.

i got asked this too. and then father don went on to talk about how he likes high verbal scores because "we can teach you basic sciences, but we can't teach you how to think"

I think that's because there's a question in the interviewer report that talks about 'academics'... I got asked the same question as well, although I didn't get any funny comments, the interviewer just wrote it down on his piece of paper.

so as for closed file, it's closed with respect to your extra-currics, personal statement, recommendations, etc. so you should be able to talk about yourself.

and yeah, the best part of interviewing in Houston was meeting the students 🙂 definitely a big plus, to see them dance around the halls, in contrast to the baylor clones.

I didn't have Dr. Don for an interview, but he had lunch with us interviewees along with Dr. Beckman. He seems like a cool guy; lots of interesting stories to tell. Lunch there was the best food-wise I've had too. 🙂

i dont want it to be a repeat of my college where it's 70% guys and 30% girls!!!

right now, if my math is right, it's 58% guys, 42% girls... have been accepted

Just like to add that I'm getting conflicting reports about what "acceptance range" is. In official correspondence with the school, I was told that everyone placed on that list last year was ultimately offered a place. However, I've also heard that 700-800 were waitlisted last year. So maybe acceptance range is a step up from the normal waitlist. Also, Dr. Beckman mentioned that last year, about 20 people had withdrawn by early February. This year, the number was 6. I'm not sure if that's really cause for concern that the class will be oversubscribed; those accepted have until May 15 to pay the deposit.

Yeah, i thought so too. when i called, karen joia told me i was on the acceptance range. i was so happy, so i asked her to confirm what acceptance range was. she told me that it was the same as waiting list. if you look at the tulane admission manual, it says that acceptance range is the same as the waitlist. and also, there is no rank in the acceptance range.

I imagine that a lot of people are holding onto their acceptances until they see how much progress Tulane has made with its rebuilding by May 15. Also, there's no point in giving up your acceptance if the school isn't asking for any money to hold your place. Historically, the most waitlist movement occurs in May, when people either have to withdraw or cough up some serious $$ to hold a place. Also, keep in mind that even though 20 people had withdrawn by February last year, it was still a very tight year for those on the waitlist. Not nearly as many people got in off the list as in previous years. Whether that's due to an increase in the number accepted immediately post-interview, or better targeting of whom to accept, I don't know. Maybe a little of both.

Hey Guys, just popping my head in here once in a while. I wanted to comment on the fact that the last two years has been the same ratio from males to females (roughly 58/42%). But, I am a girl that has been accepted and I am attending Tulane in August; so you can count me in! 😛
 
I am beginning my search for the most appropriate Laptop for med school @ Tulane, and I was wondering if anyone had any insight on what Tulane recommends (PC, MAC) or what applications we will need to run for school.

Not sure about the med school, but the uptown campus is really set up for PCs, although Macs are used for graphic design apps, etc. In general, it is safer to stick with PCs wherever you go.

Hey guys,

I'd like to get your opinions on my current situation. I went to Tulane for undergrad, then got my Masters at Tulane. Average MCAT and GPA. Got called for an interview in the last week of January, then interviewed in New Orleans in the first week of February. Today I called the school and found out that I have been placed on the acceptance range/waitlist. In all honesty, what are my chances of getting in this year? And what, if anything, should I do to improve my chances? Thanks for your help.
 
I'd say your chances of getting in are pretty good, however you may not hear until the middle of May (due to the late deposit deadline). A LOI may increase your chances in the long run. Good luck.
 
I was recently accepted and fully intend on going to Tulane. However, I am a little concerned about the cost--I could be $250,000 in debt after 4 years. I know it's probably a good investment, but is anyone else having these concerns? Also, what kind of loan assistance are you guys looking into? Thanks for your input.
 
Do any of you who plan on attending Tulane next year know what the housing situation is like down their? Where are the best places (websites) to go and start researching places? Craig's list? Will rents go up as the year moves along and people return or go down as more housing becomes available? I really don't want to show up Aug 1st and be scrabling to find a place.

i was under the impression that most M1s live at Deming Pavilion. Its really close to the medical school building and reasonably priced. Housing in New Orleans is a B*TCH right now from what i hear so i think this will be our best bet.

With the damage from katrina and the larger than normal class, I think the deming housing will be a sought after commodity. I am curious as to how Tulane prioritizes ( by class year) room assignments when it comes to shortages; it should be interesting. I would go down if I had to live in a tent outside Cafe Du Monde. (best coffee ever)

I went down to NOLA three years ago for a conference, went to Cafe Du Monde and got totally adicted to the coffee and beignets. Ever since , I have gotten a case of the coffee for christmas and have some pretty much each morning. I'd say its at least 50% of my decision to go to tulane.
 
Interviewing Thursday!!!! I hope the Abita brewery is still making their lovely amber beer, because I'm gonna need one. I'll bring the camera just in case we get a chance to tour the re-opened med center (probably not gonna happen).

http://deming.tulane.edu states that they won't be accepting apps till April 2 (except from previous residents, who can fedex in their requests for next year). I think I'm going to fedex my app the day before...

what about the monthly terms? it's $50/month cheaper to sign for 9 or more months. how long is one normal year? 9 months? 10?

Not only are they still making Amber, PurpleHaze, TurboDog, and all the other brews, they've come out with a new "Restoration Ale". A portion of proceeds goes to hurricane relief.
Yet another way to do your part! 😎

I interviewed in Houston and have been selling the Tulane name ever since I got the good news. Only problem is, I still haven't been properly introduced to NOLA.

Dr Beckman and I talked about this during my interview, and I solemnly swore to her that I'd visit New Orleans towards the end of February should I be lucky enough to get in....

So, PM me if you'll be around and feel like showing a novice a good time. The first round is on me!
 
So anyone interviewing next week or is Friday the final day?
