I can't figure out which school is better/more reliable. Tulane has the post-katrina issues and GW has the probation issues. Anyone willing to weigh in on how to choose between them, leaving out subjective issues such as weather and location? I'm stuck in a rut.

Thanks guys

As a third year looking at residency possibilities, I have noticed that Tulane has a lot of unique combined programs that seem interesting. It also has a decreased cost of living.

Could you explain the probabation issues you're referring to?

I would not worry about GW's probation issue- even their biggest critics say it will be resolved, guaranteed. I think it is really hard to discuss GW fairly without talking about location/cost. Let's face it, DC is DC and there really is no substitute, but it is so much $$$$$$.

I was unaware of the LCME placing GW on probabtion, but my gut instinct is that this kid failed (got kicked out) and had some sour grapes against the administration, so he went to the LCME.

I seriously doubt there will be any accredation issue in the future once they resolve whatever the report (I don't think it's been released) says. The school has been around since 1821 and isn't going anywhere.

My selfish take on your situation is that you should go to GW, because I'm waitlisted at Tulane 🙂

Official accrediation issues or not, it does seem like GW has its share of imperfections. Not to say all schools don't, but GWs have definitely been in the spotlight lately. I just wonder, given the option to go somewhere else, why GW should still be in the running considering all the bad reviews it's been getting lately. Aside from the opportunities that DC has to offer, what is so good about GW?

I was accepted there. I didn't think it was that great after the interview. I didn't apply to Tulane because of the rebuilding craziness, but I would choose Tulane over GW. All just my opinion though. Others will probably disagree with me.

Hey guys,

I have several friends at both schools. Here's my take. GW provides a wealth of opportunities for students and seems like a descent program.

But keep in mind, for those that have the option of going elsewhere, it is the only medical program in Canada and the US
(>150 medical schools) that is on probation.

The probation issue is not entirely a lounge problem. It is largely to do with the curriculum not satisfying LCME standards.

Zuck

I've only heard of the lounge/study space issues. Would you mind elaborating on the curriculum issues? Thanks

My understanding is that the lounge space thing is the only information in the report that GW has actually publicly released. When I interviewed there, the students I spoke to did admit to some other things in the report that had to do with curriculum: they said something about how grading wasn't consistent, clinical stuff didn't completely correlate with classroom (??) -- I know this sounds vague, and that's kind of the complicated part of it. They aren't being open about it so a lot of this is up to conjecture. Obviously, it's pretty unreal that they would be on probation for lounge space alone.

I think the point is NOT that GW is going to become an illegitimate medical school and that the people who are going there are not going to earn a valid MD. That's not going to happen. They will get off probation. However, the mere fact that they are on it, and what that implies about the school and the quality of life there, is questionable... And that's what makes me nervous.

I am on the waitlist at Tulane so you should totally go to GW.

Oh, also it's really hot in NOLA in the summer and... being in DC puts you close to a lot of cool stuff!

Also, I want in at Tulane.

But mostly because GW is AWESOME!!!

Agreed. The school will definitely come off probation. If a school gets on probation in the first place, you have to wonder about how well they are running the place.

I would chose Tulane for the following reasons:

1) It's in New Orleans (need I say anything else?)
2) The school has done a lot of rebuilding post-Katrina, and the students I talked to said most of the changes that affected them because of Katrina won't affect our class.

Granted, there are some issues with the EM rotation down there. Tuition is another issue, but I think the cost of living in New Orleans is cheaper than DC.

Of course, I'm biased...

Edit: Oh yeah, you get time off for Mardi Gras!

I'm in the same rut. Both are the same high cost. Leaning towards Tulane because I liked it better. Also, Tulane stats are a bit better. I believe there are'nt any real post-Katrina issues. GW has the probation thing but I ca'nt imagine they wo'nt sort it out. Can it really lose accredition? Costs work out the same because although DC living is more expensive, its fees are slightly less. Which would lead to better residencies? Does being in DC mean anything?

👍
In my mind, there are more post-katrina opportunities, rather than issues.

I agree. I loved Tulane when I interviewed, everyone was really friendly and it seemed like a fun group. There are so many opportunities to improve the surrounding community, and the students that I spoke with were all very involved in different areas of NO.

Unfortunately, Tulane does have insane tuition 🙁 But since you're choosing between two expensive schools, go with Tulane! (especially if you want an MPH and/or want to work with the underserved!!!)

Edit: The humidity in NO would suck...also, if you're interested policy, then maybe D.C. is a better choice
