Turning down acceptances and reapplying in the future?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I read the OP and just want to do this...

From someone who watches UFC/Pride like crazy, I can stomach some violence but this is just off da wall!!! I mean cartoon ain't supposed to bleed especially at the hand of a PC... but it's funny n apt (b4 the gore)...

OP ...... we could use some statistics on re-applicants who declined a prior acceptance, let us know how u fare... Plus, if think is how u think in an unaltered state of mind, then, seriously, never do drugs...

you can find unhappy/bitter students at ANY medical school i'm sure. defer for a year if you can but turning down the acceptance as others have said is a bad idea.

If he wants to drop it, let him drop it. UF won't have any trouble filing his spot.

I seriously believe if other schools couldn't check and see if re-applicants had been admitted somewhere before, some students would spend 20+ years re-applying until they got accepted to Johns Hopkins/Harvard/etc.

sssoooo....if you don't take the seat, what do you plan on doing the next few years? You will SO regret this decision in a year or two, when you realized your wasting time stalling when you could have been complete with school!

I don't know why everyone is freaking out about that keyboard gif. It's been circulating on the internet for a while.

Okay, okay, that was a pretty stupid idea I guess. I just got really concerned after hearing from three different people (out of four I talked to) that they wish they would've gone elsewhere.
It wasn't a stupid idea. It's quite possible that the people in this thread calling you names vastly downplay how much your surroundings can impact you. If three out of four people you spoke with hated it, it's not a stretch to wonder whether most of the students there have low morale. You're looking out for your best interests - performance, health, happiness, sanity, etc.

Unfortunately, when it comes to medical schools most of us can't be picky. Since you have one acceptance, you do not have the luxury of choosing a place that you feel you might be happier and/or more successful at. You need to make the most of it. Whether it's competitive or whether there's low morale, you need to focus on yourself, try to enjoy what you can from the experience, and just get through it.

And while I'm speaking with a relatively negative outlook, don't go in with a negative outlook! As was echoed here before, there will always be people unhappy with what they chose. You're not them, so it's not necessarily true that you'll dislike the place and the experience. Stay positive.

This is probably a worse idea than mentioning sexual orientation in a PS and bringing a musical instrument to interviews.

I am 90% sure i remember reading somewhere that this is a terrible idea because they keep on your record that you turned down an acceptable and in the future it will be extremely hard to get another one.

As you probably see, many people including medical student and school admin recommend you not to do it. It's probably a wise choice to attend your state shcool.

Bloody mess = Cute?!?! 😕

hmmmmm...

Its meant to be a joke to show the ridiculousness of the post. Thats what made it cute, not someone who would do that in real life obviously. But clearly, people are taking a cartoon animation too seriously.

Thank you everyone for your comments. They have definitely helped me realize how ridiculous this thought was (although I have done many ridiculous things in my life, many of which turned out wonderfully). I just wanted to throw the idea out there see what others thought.

Anyway, a little background on why I even entertained this idea. I wasn't very serious when I applied this cycle. I was actually planning on taking a few years off, but I just wanted to see if I could get into a top school right off the bat before my MCAT expired. I only applied to 7 schools (most USNWR top 20) and was rejected by all but UF. To make things worse, I didn't even complete any of my secondaries until early October. I spoke to an adcom who had rejected me, and it sounded like all the gaps in my app were rectifiable--I had weak clinical and volunteer experience and my PS was unfocused.

I hope this helps people understand my intentions and maybe they will sound a little less ridiculous. I'm definitely going back for a second look and unless I find something to my extreme dislike, I'll be a Florida Gator next year.

I don't know what a troll is but I think the OP may be one. Who the ^&%^ would turn down their only med school acceptance when it is so freakin' hard to get in and only gets worse every year???!!

you need to man-up! like who cares if the school isn't likable, you got accepted, toughen up, this is not the last time you're gonna hear something negative about school, medicine, clinic, whatever, sorry the world is not too rosy, but if you'd prefer it that way, medical training would be tough on you whether you go now, 10yrs from now, postmenopausal....postarthritic...

I hope you're an atheist, because if you believe in any kind of Karma this is really pushing it. How many people applying would love to have been accepted to even one school? If you're having second thoughts about a physician's career or have a serious personal issue then that's one thing, and the reason they invented the deferral, but to bail out now and come back later to get a more favorable placement? Well it strikes me as the kind of thing that could backfire.

I'd seriously reconsider what you're proposing. It could be a huge mistake.

Look at it this way, imagine yourself reinterviewing in X years. "Why didn't you matriculate the first time you were accepted?"

If you don't have an amazing answer, you probably shouldn't do this.

They are not a troll. They also are most likely going to UF anyhow. Actually sadly I know some people who did do just this. One turned down an acceptance at her dad's old school because she wanted to stay in Fl. and got in the following application cycle and another turned down a HBCU acceptance to go to a Fl. school now. So I've seen it. I'm not sure if i agree with it as the HBCU acceptance person had to reapply 2 other times before being accepted and it was rather risky. But it is what it is. At least he's happy now.

Just go. UF is a strong school with a good reputation.

There will always be some unhappy people at every med school.
Just look at the big picture.

Wow, guys, I think the OP got the message!

Yes, it is probably not the brightest idea to turn down your only acceptance, but I think this is a valid question. I was curious myself, not because I want to turn a school down, but just in general, if this is something people do...

As somewhat of an anecdote, There is a girl now in Harvard who turned down Tufts before reapplying... From her blog (which you guys must know), she said Tufts didn't even look back at her the second time around. So my only addition to this discussion is, certainly, if you were to do this, don't imagine the school you turned down will even bother with you again...

As a matter of common sense, it also seems that doing this should raise a humongous red flag. Why did you turn down the school? how strong are your motivations for medicine? How did you not have the foresight to avoid a school you're not interested in? How gullible are you? None of this is meant to reflect on the OP, I'm just saying that these might be reasonable questions AdComs must come across when reading an app from someone that turned down an acceptance for something other than an extremely persuasive reason...
