Yes, I know this topic has been discussed over and over on this forum, and I've read the threads covering this, but I want to get as much input as I can.

I was accepted to UCB, UCI, and UCD. I was waitlisted to UCSD, rejected to UCLA. I've narrowed my top choices to either UCB or UCI, but I'll have to reconsider if UCSD's waitlist pulls through. >.< I was accepted to Berkeley for as an MCB major, and I plan to minor in psychology (maybe even switch majors). In Irvine I'll be a biolological sciences major, and then go into neurobiology. Again, I might minor in psych or even double major.

On one hand, I admire the prestige and recognition of UC Berkeley. It's Berkeley! I never thought I'd ever have the chance to go to such a remarkable university. I feel like I would seriously regret it later on if I turned it down. And if my plans for medical school don't turn out right, the degree from Berkeley will help me in the job market much more than Irvine's. It's programs are much higher ranked as well. However, I've been hearing rumors of grade deflation and of pre-meds who do nothing but study all day. I don't know whether I'd be able to stay competitive or not. On the contrary, I like the general atmosphere of UC Irvine, more so than Cal's. It appears to be much more relaxed, and I feel like I could maintain a stronger GPA here than in Cal. But I'm really not certain... I really don't know how I would perform at either school yet.

Right now I'm leaning towards Irvine. All of the people I've talked to from Irvine have been happy with their choice. Many people I've heard from Berkeley usually say something along the lines of "It was the hardest I've worked in my life, but so worth it." I like UCI a little better, but the thought of turning down Berkeley sickens me. (Again, if my waitlist to UCSD pulls through, that just adds another option >.<)

I'd like to hear from students of these schools. How was the university in terms of helping you get into medical school? How was the competition/difficulty of your course load? How was the social life? Are you glad you chose your school? If you were in my situation, which would you pick?

I didn't go to any of these schools, but people I know went to Berkeley, majored in economics or finance, and are working at hedge funds and such as analysts and prop traders etc.

It's what you want.

Grade deflation is notorious at Berkeley, so.... Good luck getting a killer GPA there with the pre-reqs.

I'd go to UC Irvine. You won't regret it. Berkeley is a prestigious school, but remember, it's not the school that makes the person.... When you go on with your future... The degree isn't you.

You, the person, are the determining factor.

And plus, Irvine is beautiful.

I didn't read the thread, but... my friend turned down Berkeley for ASU.

Edit: Another friend chose U of A over MIT.

Food for thought: Why be a big fish in an ocean, when you can be a big fish in a small pond. Honestly? Being a pre-med is ridiculously competitive. Back in college, I had a "friend" (probably the smartest guy I knew in college), purposefully tell me wrong answers/mechanisms/etc when studying together. Why? Because being a pre-med is ridiculously competitive.

Now don't get it twisted. I am by no means saying that Berkeley is a better school than UCI. I largely disagree with allowing a private organization, US News, dictate what the best schools in America are. Straight bs. That being said though . . . (now read this part carefully) you will encounter more likely-to-be-successful pre-meds at UCB than you will at UCI. What does that correlate to? Competition. Wanna get first enrollment into that class with that great professor? Competition. Wanna get face time with that awesome professor during office hours? Competition. Wanna get that kick-a** research gig with that one professor? Competition. Wanna ask out that cute girl/guy in your dorm that's a communications major? . . . You guessed it: competition.

Don't burn yourself out now trying to compete at the best under-grad you can get into. Go to the school where you can best maneuver yourself and make yourself out to be: that big fish in that small pond. 😉.

Socially? I think you'd have a blast in Berkeley, but is it reallllly worth it to YOU? For some people it is. Others? Not so much.

Well there might be competition. But on the other hand, you'd probably be surrounded by more motivated people. If you find a community of people who are mutually helping each other, then that correlates with more access to resources, opportunity, and knowledge. You'll also have access to more world renown professors at Berkeley that can give you an edge with letters of Rec if they're familiar names.

That being said, you can get into a top tier med school at either university. Tater tots got accepted to 11 or so top tier med schools and he went to UCI. Undergrad is really about the culture.

If I were you, I'd wait for ucsd and go there since I love San Diego.

I don't believe you'd be surrounded by more motivated people "per sé".

I think that the college doesn't matter too much when one is trying to get into professional school.

If he/she were going into finance? YES. GO TO BERKELEY. No brainer. If he/she wants to be a doctor, pick a school relative to location, closeness to home, and tuition price.

Thanks guys! I've decided and committed to UCI.
