Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for medical TV shows, movies, documentaries, etc. that you can learn "book" knowledge from?

Thanks!

My dear there are many medical tv shows taking place on discovery/NGC channel, highlighting medical cases with their result, if possible check out its broadcast timing. Also if you visit any library you can get vast number of books related to medicine & medical cases.

Children's Hospital

+1

I would never "learn" from a TV show, but you might benefit from it as a mental exercise. Gray's Anatomy manages to cram a decent amount of important medicine into the episodes (between the obligatory hypersexuality). My girlfriend will be watching it and I'll overhear them talk about Kawasaki's Disease or administering dantrolene for malignant hyperthermia...and I'll think "oh yeah, you also use dantrolene for malignant neuroleptic syndrome" and "Kawasaki's...strawberry tongue and young MI's".

That episode of Spongebob where he gets the suds opened my eyes to the possibilities of holistic medicine.

I second House.... there's lot of inaccuracies but I found it often motivated me to do some fact checking and pull up an article to do so

It's a slightly more interesting context for reading up on lupus or whatever else they feature

Choose a short 20 min show like scrubs and enjoy it for comedic value and spend the time saved watching pathoma. I guarantee you'll not learn enough about medicine in any show to validate the time spent

I did get a cool ten percent on the first paper of my biochem final because I (by complete chance) remembered House's mnemonic for HAGMA causes (MUDPILES) and was able to sufficiently bull**** the rest of the answer thereafter, so I'll give credit where it's due.

That said, if you've watched House, MD, this guy's reviews of the medicine on that show really did help me get a grasp on how a lot of things work.

Also I am now an expert on lupus. Which is a shame, because it's never lupus (even when it is).

Edit: SDN has bad-word filters? Well gosh dangit to heck.

TV and learn just don't go together for me. Scrubs is a must see regardless. House is great but not really manageable during school unless it's MSK block

There's something wrong about a guy who left medicine to be a comedian but has to play a doctor on tv
I really expected a lot more from Dr. Ken. Maybe it would've been funnier if it was on HBO or something

This is a joke, right?

If school and entertainment could be successfully combined, the majority of America would have PhD's.

I would love to leave medicine and do something that was just media related or write a book.

At least once my breasts got me on national television.

Oz is weird, but some of those other doctors I really respect - like Dr. Drew Pinsky

I can't believe Doc Martin didn't come up in this thread!!

A few very old school, almost "English" tradition attendings got me into watching it (I've had residents and attendings make tv shows and movies required!!)
