I am now looking forward to becoming a Doctor of pharmacy? I am VERY interested in clinical rotations: (i.e. surgery, oncology, infectious disease). I'm just soo excited about all these opportunities. I visited both UF & NOVA websites in an attempt to find more information, alas, to no avail. Nova has pictures that show students doing exciting projects on its website. UF, on the other hand, has none whatsoever. It's difficult to see what goes on at that school. One gets the feeling that UF is just strictly work (cutthroat) and no fun. I tend to be turned off by that.

I am considering these two schools, please give me some input so that I can make an informed decision. Thank you so much!

I think it is acceptable to call a pharmacist a doctor as much as you would call your dentist or eye doctor a doctor.

Finally, after my education, just curious... am I Dr. (NAME)?
Hi! I go to UF and I'm at the Orlando campus. I can tell you at our campus it is anything but all serious and cutthroat. We have a few students that came down from Gainesville for their 3rd year and one of them says she absolutely loves it and wishes she were here the whole time. In Gainesville she said it was much more competitive and people weren't as involved. I think there is a huge opportunity to be involved in student organizations at our campus. I'm involved in most clubs and was the president of FSHP. I felt like what I did really had a huge impact because we are a smaller campus (about 50 students per class).

As far as rotations and such, I find our school to be clinical based. I personally want to do a residency and I find it a huge asset that most of our facilitators are working in hospitals and other clinical settings. UF also offers many different rotations, including surgery, ID and trauma as well as oncology. In fact it's required that we do either a pediatric, geriatric, or oncology rotation. I'm not sure about the rotation sites that NOVA gets. If all that doesn't entice you tuition should ($8K/yr for FL, and I believe NOVA is in the $20K range..but I'm not sure). Good luck with your decision!

these 2 are also among my choices. uf is cheaper, and if u want a true college experience, gainsville is one of the best college towns i've been to. plus gator football, nuf said. the uf program is deffinitly tougher than nova. i have a life out side of school and i want to keep it that way, so i rank nova higher. they are both great programs and schools though.

Thank you both for yout input!

This will most likely come off as biased because I'm a gator, but UF is not all work and no play, and it's not cutthroat either. Since I don't know anything about NOVA's program, I can't really compare the two. However, UF will prepare you for any and all types of pharmacy you can go into -- much more than retail. I've also heard from some UF pharmacy grads, that they felt more prepared to enter the field than other students from other schools they were on rotations with. That could just be gators bragging about being gators though. We have a lot of pride in our school.

Also, keep in mind that Gainesville is not the only town you can attend school in. There is also St Pete, Orlando, and Jacksonville in case you aren't into the party hard college lifestyle.

Coming from an observer's point of view, i visited UF last year and to tell u the truth i fell in love with it immediately. It was such a nice school with a nice environment in a nice location too. The people were very friendly. Wel went on teh tour of the school first and we had to locate the School of pharmacy by ourselves, not withstanding they were accomodating (even though the administrator was out and we didnt have an appointment for the tour). we were allowed to tour it ourselves and ask questions.

the students were also friendly also in helping with directions and info. to top it off the fees are cheap.

Pity i would not be applying there ( they require the Toefl even though u have a degree), and also i figured it was too far to relocate with my family here in Maryland.

I go to UF too - and I can vouch for what he is saying. I work at Shands in the IV room at UF - we deal with UF grads, along with a couple of residents (one from Nova). UF is hard core clinical and academics for a good portion of the program. UF grads tend to be regarded better at the two hospitals I have worked for.

Aside from that - both schools have an excellent NAPLEX pass percentage - but UF is significantly cheaper than Nova. If I had the choice, I would go to UF over Nova.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do...
