Twu fall 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i got an email saying that i got recommended for the ot program. does it mean that i got in for sure to the graduate school at twu??

Are you an applicant from the Houston or Dallas campus? And that letter means, that the OT school has recommended you to the TWU-graduate school. Final decisions will be made by the graduate school. Congratulations that is awesome news =)

I received my official acceptance letter in the mail today from the Dallas campus! Cowgirl, I was told by one of the TWU staff that they have never seen a recommended applicant not be accepted. Congrats!

I received my official letter of acceptance from the Dallas campus as well!! See ya in August!!

Is anyone still coming to this forum? Did you Houston applicants ever hear anything yet?

Yeah I called the TWU Houston campus and emailed them...March is when we will find out! I wish we didn't have to wait for so long!! thank you and congrats to all the dallas students who got accepted 🙂

I talked to someone at the campus today and she said we would find out at the end of the month. Hopefully that's the case... I can't take it too much longer!

Received my recommendation letter to the program yesterday!😀

Haven't received any emails or letters, but as of yesterday Web Advisor shows my status as accepted. So, I guess I'm in too....would still like to receive some form of confirmation.

They personalize the heading of the letter so I guess they are completing them one-by-one.

Hi, I have been accepted to houston's MOT program this fall. I'm so excited to start, but I have been hearing some things about the school that has made me confused! EX: school focuses way too much on research, UTMB is better, hands on, and teachers more supportive. What are your thoughts on this? What are the good/bad things you heard about the school? Did any of you get accepted anywhere else? If you did, what made you chooes TWU? Thanks for your help!

1. I'm not sure how can you focus "way too much on research"? That is inherently how you learn; hands-on is applying that knowledge. Do you mean UTMB sounds easier than TWU?

2. When it comes to UTMB being "better" and teachers being more supportive, I'm not sure how someone could answer or provide feedback on that. That's pretty much impossible to compare without a student deciding to attend and complete both programs, which might be hard to track down.

3. I applied only to TWU because it is within driving distance and I did not want to move nearer to Galveston, but I have also heard TWU is a more research-based program. And when I say "heard", I mean "I read on this forum." But I really feel like that type of thing is impossible to measure. I personally think the best things to look at are price (pretty much a wash between the two), distance from where you live or would like to, and the way you felt about the program judging from the interview and brief time spent there. When it is all said and done, both programs are practically ranked the exact same nationally and you're not going to be looked down upon for either. I will say that I think TWU probably has a little more alumni in the field, but I have no proof or numbers to back that up. Just seems like every OT I've met was educated there. That type of thing can help but I definitely wouldn't have it sway me if I already had a preference.

I can only give you my opinion as some one who has looked into and applied to both schools

Both schools have excellent reputations and high pass rates for the certification test.

TWU is known for research, but all the OT programs I’ve looked into have some research component. I felt like during the application process TWU just emphasizes the fact that you need to complete a research project to graduate from the program. They want applicants to know this before entering the program. Also TWU is one of the few schools in TX that offer a doctorate degree in OT, many people who get a Doctorate Degree do so because they want to teach and conduct research.

Some OT schools require that students complete observation hours in a variety of OT settings in addition to level one and two fieldwork. TWU is not one of these schools. It doesn’t make them any better or worse than other schools it’s just their particular teaching style.

As for the teachers I can only repeat what I heard from other students at the interview. During the interview at TWU one of the current OT students was asked about the program professors, she said that the teachers were not really supportive. But that was one student opinion.

I am currently a MOT student at TWU Dallas campus. TWU does focus on research, but I don't find that it is extremely difficult or that I am learning any less. I think most schools teach an abundance of theory the first semester and then get into the "meat and potatoes" of OT after that. It is graduate school and the professors don't hold your hand, but they are supportive and approachable. They range from purely academic to clinical professors so you get a mix of perspectives which is good. For anyone currently on the wait list, I was sixth on the list last year and found out I got in on June 1st and I am doing well in school. They are also opening an amazing new building to us in Spring 2012!!! If you are in the Dallas area, you should go tour the new building to see what it is like! PM me if you have any questions!

Thanks for your post. I am in a similar situation as you were last year. I was recently placed on the waist list for this coming term. I was told that in prior years, those placed on the wait list were eventually accepted to TWU. As you know the wait has been rather stressful because it makes very difficult to plan. I also worry that this might be the first time that no one declines leaving those on the wait list out. Have you heard of this possibility ever happening?

Yes, being on the waitlist is very stressful. I can't guarantee that you will get it because it depends on a lot of things. I think this past year around ten got calls (some of them may have declined). You can call the school and ask where you are ranked on the waitlist. A lot of people accept their acceptance at every school they are accepted to and then decide later which one to go to--kind of unfair if you ask me. One of my classmates found out a week before school started that she got in, so you may be waiting a while. Call the school, update transcripts, and wait. Good luck!

do you recommend that taking the summer course of neuro lecture and lab?

I'm not sure how difficult Neuro lec/lab will be in the summer but from what I heard from many of the current students when I was at the interview, it is definitely better to take it prior to starting the program. I will be taking it this summer since I can take it all by itself and not have to worry about adding to the workload I will have in the fall.

As far as the medical terminolgy requirement, I have never taken the course but was wondering if anyone knows how difficult or easy it is just to test out of it.

So I guess I just got put on the waiting list.

I too was wait listed. Have you followed up with the school? Has you status changed? Was TWU the only school you applied to?

Congrats to those who have been accepted and will be attending twu this fall. I will be going this fall too =) I have a question-have any of you heard back from jlee since being accepted about anything (like registration or orientation)?

TWU does not focus too much on research, but they definitely work it into their curriculum much more than the other programs do. If you are a person really interested in research, then this program is great for you. Another reason why people say that TWU focuses more on research is because of anatomy. UT-Health Science
Center San Antonio, UTMB, and Texas Tech have gross anatomy with cadavers. It is much more hands on and a completely different experiene when you get to see the muscles and their insertions and origins. It definitely helps a lot more during biomechanics

I have recently heard that TWU is slighlty changing their curriculum to make it a little more hands on. Theory is important, but when you go out on fieldwork, that is where the hands on learning comes into play. OTs already in the field have had students from all programs and I have heard that they say students from UTMB and UTHSCSA seem to know more when it comes to the hands on stuff.

All the programs are good in their individual ways, I was accepted to all 4 institutions and I definitely had to weight the pros and cons to each school. When it comes to the responsiveness of staff, when I interviewed at TWU it just was not welcoming and the faculty seemed rushed and not interested in getting to know applicants at all. UTHSCSA and UTMB were my top two choices. The staff seemed very welcomed during the interview process and it truly felt like they were being sincere.

And of course I will show my bias and say come to UTHSCSA, our program is amazing! I am about to finish my first year and I already feel like I know so much, I have already been out 5 or 6 different fieldworks, the faculty is amazing and they all have a variety of backgrounds!!!! 🙂 I wish all of you the best wherever life takes you and I look forward to being colleagues one day!!! Go MOTs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've read somewhere else on these boards that the majority of people did not have their neuro completed and it did not interfere that drastically with their other coursework...FWIW.

JAVOT,
You definitely summarize TWU very well, especially with your insight to your brief time during the interview. That is exactly how it is and you were wise to capture that before hand.

If you were accepted to TWU, congratulations. You should be proud but be warned that the happy feelings will get knocked off you by a few "sweet" faculty members. You'll hear plenty of "This is grad school" to every question or concern you may have regarding just about anything. Good luck. A school with a less than encouraging faculty coupled with a lack of resources that even a community college would provide ( i.e. plentiful of study rooms, cafeteria, spacious computer labs, student parking, and a library, yes, a library...what school wouldn't have one?!? ). Yikes, huh? You might ask yourself, "this is grad school, right?"

So, if you were disappointed that you were wait listed, don't be. This could be a blessing in disguise. Do your research and find a school that offers the total package.

I was just taken off the TWU wait list and was offered a spot for the fall
TWU MOT program. Life is good.

I look forward to meeting all of those who will be attending TWU.

Does anyone know if Neuro will be offered both summer terms, or will it be offered for only one semester?

Does anyone have any housing suggestions? Price and locations are important.

Congratulations on your acceptance!

Neuro A&P lasts all Summer from June to August. Sorry, I don't have any suggestions in regards to housing.

Has anyone who has been accepted to the Houston program heard anything about the next step? When I called to accept my class seat they said it would be a while before we heard anything.....just curious how long a while is going to be.

All I know is that on the website, orientation is not until late August?.. So I don't know when to register or what were supposed to do before then. But if your applying for financial aid, their website mentions to try to do it by April, if not then as soon as you can (fafsa, CIF, and providing copies of docs to office..etc...) Sorry I have not been too helpful; I tried =) But please let me know, or post also, if you get any information too! Thanks

See you all in August!

Hello,

I just got accepted into Houston TWU Occupational Therapy program. Does anyone know anything about the program, reviews, or what to expect? I am extremely anxious to know more. Can anyone help?

I am planning to taking neuro this summer so I can concentrate on only this class. However, I. Am being told that in order to qualify for financial aide, I need to register for more than 6 hours. I understand that some are taking an on line medical terminogy class to qaulify for loans. Does anyone know how demanding neuro and will taking medical terminogy be too much to handle during the summer? I am trying to figure out what to do because on the one hand, I can't

. Afford to pay for my classes without the assistance but I don't want to over load myself with classes and jeopardize my grades in neuro

No I haven't Im looking to take it but I got accepted into Houston so I need to go to Dallas just don't know what to do about living arrangements. Any suggestions?

Thank You

tandcab,

I will be taking neuro at the Dallas campus. They don't offer it down in Houston? Not really sure what to tell you about living arrangements.

atc1306,

Ive hear many people say that the only medical terminology course is easy. I wasn't going to sign up for it initially, but I think I am going to now.

It looks like I will be doing the same because of the financial issue. Since I got started late in the process I still need to work out some issues before I can register

TED ,

Can you tell me wheat a normal weeks is for you? Should I be prepared to give my life away to the program??

Thanx

For those of you who were waitlisted at TWU, how do they contact you to tell you that you have been accepted into the MOT program and taken off waitlist? Email, mail...??

Hi, I am in the process of applying to TWU's OT program. I graduate TAMU this May 2012. Would anyone be willing to tell me what the process is like and what makes you competitive?

Thing like, what GPA is competitive for Prereqs, overall, etc.. What does it take to at least get an interview, do they look at all grades or just last 60 hours, etc.. What about the type of volunteer work, or total hours, etc...

Do they treat all items the same, or do they weigh the grades over the interview but not as much as the letters of reference?

Any real world numbers from your applications would be helpful!

Any help would be great!! TWU Dallas would be my first choice.

Thanks! 🙂🙂
