Hey guys...just a question. How many transitional year or prelim spots should one interview for? Is it the same 8-10 as recommended for ophtho?

I'm doing 5 interviews.....After doing ophtho interviews, that's all I can do!

I applied to 18 and interviewed at 8. I'm a PGY2 now, and looking back I'm sooo glad that I spent so much time thinking about my transitional year rank list. I know several people in my residency program who got lazy after the early match (i'm in an early match field) and just defaulted into the internship offered by the same university.

That first year can make a huge difference in your overall happiness and well being when it's finally time to start your real training after internship. I ended up matching at a really cush TY, worked ridiculously low hours (days on medicine wards ended at 1 PM), rested up, and showed up to the first day of residency completely refreshed and ready to work. Others who put no thought into their internship showed up looking like they had been beaten down for a whole year. There are a LOT of TY's out there that will work you like a medicine prelim.

So don't take this decision lightly- it can make a huge difference in your life. And it can totally be worth moving twice for.

Having a hard time making my rank list for TY/prelim. I was limited in location for personal reasons, but interviewed at 8 places in Boston area. Now don't know whether to do the super cush transitional at a program that didn't give me a great feeling during interview day, versus a perlim at a community hospital that advertises good training with reasonable hours, 3-4 months elective, happy residents. i've ruled out the hard core academic programs. I want to get to my residency having had time to read, but also want a reasonable internal medicine training. any advice??

would realy appreciate any info re boston area programs, specifically st. elizabeth, lahey, mt auburn, newton-wellesley, carney
