I realize this may differ from school to school and by term, but I would just like to get a better idea of what to expect. Can you please tell me what a typical week would be like for a student enrolled in a MOT program?

For example:

Do you go to class from 9am-5pm, Mon-Fri? How many hours per day/ days per week are you in class on average?

How much time do you spend studying or working on homework/papers?

Do you have to meet up with your classmates outside of school to work on group projects?

Are you able to work part-time while in school?

- I'd really like to know things of this nature. ...I really appreciate it! 😳 Thanks!

Every program is different as many classes across college campuses vary. I go to a weekend program. It's different from "traditional" programs in that I only take 2-3 classes per semester and classes are held all day 8am-5pm Saturday and Sunday on alternating weekends. We also go year round (fall, spring, and summer) and we finish a little bit later than most programs in 3 years versus 2 1/2. This makes the program a little more challenging because most of the students in the program work part or full time and most of our work is done independently and online. Learning how to balance school work with our "other life" is challenging and the setup isn't for everyone. You really have to be especially disciplined in studying and getting work done.

My school( seton hall) has class everyday from 9:30 to around 3 or 4 with breaks on mondays and tuesdays, and ends at around 7pm on thursdays.. We have one class wednesdays and fridays though, however the wednesday class will end soon because that's when we are expected to go out on fieldwork( next month). Regarding homework, i read articles/given assignments nearly everyday, since most work is assigned reading. We also have upcoming projects where we are expected to meet with other classmates outside our schedule. It is advised not to work during the program since it is a heavy load, however i do know some classmates who work once a week during weekends. Hope this helps!

Just to clarify; you are saying that you have class on Mon and Tues from 9:30 - 3 /4:00pm and you get a break at some point throughout the day. You also have class on Thurs from 9:30 - 7:00pm Then you also have one class on Weds and Fri which I'm assuming is only a couple hours long. Is that all correct? Sorry, it was just a little confusing how you wrote all that. lol. You started off saying you had class everyday from 9:30- 3 or 4, then immediately afterwards you said on one day you have class till 7pm and on two of the days you only have one single class..?

**Edit- I think I understand what you meant. -You have class from 9:30 to around 3 or 4 (with breaks) on Mondays and Tuesdays. Sorry, when you said "everyday," it really threw me off for some reason... :smack:

I just started my program last week (traditional, 2.5 year MSOT), but I'm taking 16 semester hours spread between 5 classes on M-F. 3 days a week I'm in class from about 8-3 with about a 2-hour break around lunchtime. The other 2 days they split us up into small lab sections, so I'm only on campus for 2-3 hours. The daily breaks are a good time to study, but I'm putting in about 3 hours a night reading and whatnot so far. We do have a group project in just about every class, so as the semester goes on I'll be spending time outside of class working with my classmates (though I'm hoping the long breaks between classes we all share will be the optimal time for these meetings!). I do not have a job, but many of my classmates work on campus between and after classes or on the weekends at restaurant-like jobs. Graduate Assistantships are the most sought-after jobs among my classmates.

Hope that helps! Good luck!

Half of the students in my program have class M, T, W, and F. The other half have class M, T, W. We didn't get to choose these schedules.

3 weeks into the program and I will admit that I could be studying more but I don't think we are at a point where we are being overloaded with new information in every class. Concepts from Fundamentals of OT overlap into Activity Analysis and Lifespan Development. I have reviewed lecture notes from these classes casually, but not for dedicated hours at a time. However, I have usually taken an hour to complete each assignment from these classes.

Now, the only class I have actually put in real studying towards is Gross Anatomy (yep, it was a pre-req AND is a part of the program) just because its my personal favorite.

Some students have met up once or twice to review for our weekly Anatomy quizzes, but I haven't attended these study sessions yet.

I babysit on afternoons throughout the school week. I think that you can hold a part-time job if you can do a closing/evening shift too.

Do you go to class from 9am-5pm, Mon-Fri? How many hours per day/ days per week are you in class on average? I'm taking 16 hours this semester and like you said depends on the semester. This semester I am in class M-F. Our schedule has a lot of gaps in it unfortunately and is as following. M&W 9-12. T-1050-830pm Th 8-4 F 8-2. How long the day is also depends on the person as well, you get randomly assigned to lab groups, for example some people are only in class on friday from 8-10 instead of my 8-2.

How much time do you spend studying or working on homework/papers?
It depends on the week really, I spend at least an couple hours just reading everyday. The reading, studying, homework work is a lot so you definitely have to keep up with it.

Do you have to meet up with your classmates outside of school to work on group projects? We have oodles of group projects. Most projects we meet in the beginning to delegate work and at the end to wrap everything up. We coordinate through email for a lot of the work just because everyone has different schedules outside of school. We do meet up in labs a few hours each week for addition study time outside of class.

Are you able to work part-time while in school? Many people do, it is all about balancing and using your time wisely. I would say the most anyone works is 20 hours a week though, most people work 10-15 hours.
