😕

hey everyone

I'm really confused about the decisions U Minn has made so far. I know that they have different counseling Ph.D. programs (one is educational, one is from the psych dept).

Does anyone know the status of the one in the psych dept with regard to rejections/waitlists/admissions?

Thanks!

Hello!

I applied counseling programs for both department of psyc and CSPP (Education). I think people who already got acceptances or waitlist are from the department of psych. Because it seems that CSPP gives you answer only by a letter whether or not it is rejection or acceptance. I read their website carefully multiple times. This is somehow interesting because most of the answers we are curious about are already in their website. If u want to make sure, the best way is to call them and ask a direct question.

Since I did not hear anything (rejection/waitlist) I will cross out U of Minn from my mind and think about plan B. It has been a tough year. Oh well. good Luck to everyone!

Psyguy2, I am a current student in the counseling psych program in the psych department at the UofMN. From what I have been told from my adviser who usually sits on the admissions committee for the counseling psych program - the admissions process went a little different this year. The department was told that if they chose to admit only four students, then they could have the option of having a wait list. I am not sure if acceptance letters have gone out yet, but if not I imagine it will be very soon. Our "Welcome Weekend" is March 5-6th - which is when we meet all the incoming students. Since applicants have until April 15th to accept schools' offers, and because we may have a wait list this year, applicants may not know until as late as April if they got in. I think this means it's possible that an applicant could miss the welcome weekend and still be admitted to the program.

I really don't know anything about the other (CSPP) psych program. I would suggest contacting the departments if you have other lingering questions. Good luck!

Jin, you may be correct. The department may have already made their decisions. I know that we do not typically interview students, although occasionally faculty will do a phone interview.

is this U of MN in twin cities? Because I applied to the clin psych phd program (clinical sciences technically) and I too am still waiting to hear from them, but I didnt even know UMN had counseling programs

Yes, they are talking about the U. of Minnesota in the twin cities. It does, in fact, have counseling programs. : )

Yes, this is a point that often needs some clarification. The U of MN Twin Cities acutally has two accredited Counseling Psych programs. One is housed in the Department of Education and Human Development (the CSPP program) and the other in the Department of Psychology. The program in the dept of psychology has a reputation of being more research based, but it is certainly clinically focused as well.

Hope that clears things up.

Okay, so I just got word that the Counseling Psych program in the Psychology department has sent out acceptances and has finalized its Welcome Weekend list. This year we invited 3 people to Welcome Weekend. We were allowed to invite 4. I think this means that if we don't get acceptances from these three students, we are able to invite applicants on the wait list.

It looks like they are admitting 4 this year and have already sent out invitations to the welcome weekend. I don't know if all four will end up coming to the U of MN. If not, I think they can go to their wait list if they really want an incoming class of 4. In the past they have typically had smaller incoming cohorts, so something tells me they may not go to their wait list even if less than 4 agree to come.

Im not talking about the counseling program? The clinical sciences program is separate... its POI specific

Also my POI said that they were still looking and offers wouldnt even go out until March

I know you are not talking about the counseling program. In my last response I was referring to admissions data for this year in the clinical sciences program. It looks like they are planning to admit 4 students, as that is the number that have been invited to the Welcome Weekend. The Counseling area in the psych dept. is only inviting 3 to the Welcome Weekend.

Hope that helps.

Sadly, I am 99% sure offers have gone out. I say this because I recently met someone at an interview who has gotten an acceptance to the ICD of the clinical science program at UMinn. Have you been checking your snail mail justin? I recently got a waitlist letter that way, but no status update online. Its possible your POI may be on a different time schedule, but I know at least one acceptance has gone out, and they only take 4 students(according to their website).

yeah who knows snail mail could be jacked up since these storms have shut down all government agencies...

What is the ICD program? idk what that even is, I just know there are adult and child tracks that have separate applications.

Edit: ICD = institute of child development, those apps are handled separately than the adult track....

This sounds accurate.

ICD is the Institute of Child Development. It's always listed at the #1 program in Child Psych. They have a joint program with the clinical sciences program in the department of psych.

hmm odd, wasnt expecting to get an offer anyways but yeah would be nice to know some status updates.

you apply to adult or child track?

you apply to adult or child track?

yes, and if you go the child route, you end up doing a dual program with ICD, which I assumed means that you need to be accepted by both programs.

It looks like you are at NIMH. Did anyone else you know of apply to the U of MN's program?

interestingly no, I think many were intimidated by the quality of the program 😉. I did meet a UMN prof on sabbatical here (Dr. Bruce Cuthbert) he is in a building right next to my apartment.

I will probably be getting a certain little letter in the mail once the government decides to start working again...

Thanks for the info I am just curious if any adult track applicants have received these letters yet.

hmm, that's harder for me to tell. The information I have doesn't list which track they were accepted to.

Yes, I applied to the child track. So I should clarify that I can only confirm that acceptances seem to have gone out for the child track. Though, I'm inclined to think they probably send them out in similar time frames since the welcome weekend for both adult and child track is the same.

So I just went back and reviewed emails from my POI and the secretary and they both said that the decisions would most def be made by mid-Feb so I guess one way or the other I will hear 🙂

hope you are fortunate enough to be accepted!

Thanks again for the info, I will maintain my pessimistic realism about the matter... and will def post on here if I hear anything

Hello! I have been invited to visit for Welcome Weekend on March 5-6, have arranged my flights and everything through the school, but I still have not been accepted. This is for the Clinical Science Program. Is this usual?

Ummm, I from the counseling area. The Welcome Weekend is for people who have been accepted. For the most part we don't do face to face interviewing, so the only time we invite students is when an offer has been extended. Are you sure you haven't been accepted? If we are paying for flights and accommodations, I would be surprised if you are not accepted. Did you apply to the joint clinical/child psych program? I think you should contact the administrator. This is confusing.

Yeah tell me about it. I am quite confused because everything does point to me being accepted but my letter to Welcome Weekend clearly states it as a part of the application process without being an interview. I think it may be because the professor that I may be working with is starting next year as well and maybe there is an issue with that/funding. Still I am so excited to be coming but I'm hoping I'm not getting to excited thinking that I'm accepted before I really am.
