U. of Miss.

Does anyone have any stat information on University of Mississippi? I've checked databases here and U.S. News Today and can't find numbers like average GPA/MCAT stuff.

I do not have what you are particularly interested in, nor did I attend medical school here. I am however a new resident in this institution and can give you some insight...

I think the students here are great. They seem to have a really decent curriculum. It seems like most are native to Mississippi and most went to one of the big MS undergrads in the state. The primary hospital, UMC, is huge with all speciliaties so you certainly get to see plenty. Overall, there is that smaller MS feel so I dont think anyone gets just lost to the big size of things. Also, no matter what anyone else tells you, Jackson MS is not a bad place to live. There are MANY super nice towns (Ridgeland, Madison, etc) that are connected to Jackson that are new, nice, safe, and very affordable. As far as what you are after, I would contact the Office of Admissions. Talk to the secretary and I am certain they have a recruiter type person in the office that can help you out....

Good Luck, feel free to PM any particular questions/concerns.

According to 2007-2008 MSAR, U of Mississippi has a median MCAT of 27N (9 in all categories). They take the highest MCAT sum within the last 4 years
Overall GPA: 3.69
Science GPA: 3.64

Non-residents are not encouraged to apply (none were admitted for '05-'06 MI class).

For that application pool, 204 residents applied, 156 interviewed, and 105 matriculated. All in all, maybe the best odds you can find.

My brother-in-law is an MI this year. He seems perfectly happy in Jackson

I'm a researcher at UMC, and I've been accepted into the class of 2012. U of Miss doesn't participate in the US News survey; Dr. Case (D of A) told my husband that they don't agree with the method of the survey. Anyways, to add to the stat info above, Dr. Case also told us that the MCAT scores for entering students at UMC are below average for matriculates, but that by Step 1 the students score average nationally, which provides evidence that the instruction at the school is exceptional since they take below average students and raise their credentials. They just changed the curriculum in the last few years, and Step scores did not decline during the transition. The curriculum is still too new for me to have info on the Step 2 scores. Emory is moving to the same curriculum (systems based) as UMC this year.

Hope that helps a little. Also, people complain about Jackson a little bit, but it's really easy to make friends, and if you have friends you won't get bored. You'll get to see a lot and perform a lot of procedures in school.

What about current non residents who were born in Mississippi? I also have significant family ties to Mississippi. Would they consider someone like me?

This only a single example, but I know an MI who grew up in MS, graduated from Millsaps and spent some of his in-between year teaching German in North Carolina and a stint in Germany. They almost turned him away for spending most of the year outside the state. So, in this case, they were concerned with in-state status beyond all else.
I'm sure there are examples of out of staters getting in, but my impression was that Mississippi residency was of upmost importance.

I attend an undergraduate school right near UMC, and Dr. Case (Dean of Admissions) has spoken several times at our school. As far as I know, they accept no out-of-staters (the MSAR 2007-2008 showed that there was only 1 out of state applicant, and they were not even granted an interview) at this point, but have heard a rumor that they will soon start considering those who are OOS but have attended an undergrad school in the state.

What they want is to breed Mississippi physicians who will stay in the state. Apparently there is a shortage of doctors here.
