Today the Director of the AOA State & International Affairs branch came to our school and told us the good news. Now, U.S. DO's will be able to sit for the PLAB examination in the UK, and after working for the National Health Service there for 1 year, U.S. DO's will be able to have full practice rights in the UK (Great Britain)! This policy change just happened last week, so it is very recent! 👍

YAY!! 😀 Now I can rethink my where will I live when I grow up plans!!

Yes, great news! But I want to move to a place where other people are not trying to blow me up. Thank God for Canada. 👍

Tell me who I am offending? You are offending every 1/2 decent american and Brit. Not to mention a back handed slap at the good people in our military! Do us all a favor an go to Canada. The greatest nation on this good earth has no place for someone like you!

Good to know. Am always thinkin of the future.

What if those arab bastards (obviously not all arabs are bastards only the murdering bombers) ruin america and say nuke a good part of it, i can always move to canada or england. But damn i dont want to drive on the other side, how gay is that anyways.

I offend a lot of people. If your feelings are hurt, get in line. 😛

I have no feelings I just think making fun of people dying is a little classless esp when you hope to be a DO.

BTW I would like to congratulate you DOs on this. I am 100% for equality and I am an MD. Best of luck. If you work hard and care your patients will love you regardless of the initials after your name!

I am in agreement with Ectopic; You don't like America get the **** out! Also, where did your patriotism go? If they try to blow this country up I am hoping we would all join and go defend our country.

Let's move the political discusiion to the Everyone forum where it belongs, start a new thread there if you want. Please don't make me close this thread.

The fact that DOs gained practice rights in the UK does more than allow some of us who want to practice in the UK that ability, it shows the world that yet another country believes us to be capable and complete physicians. The international gap is closing.

Do United States MD's have to work in their National Health Service for 1 year?

Canada is great and all if you like cold and boring.
I guess your not into actually paying attention to details on the news... The only place in the UK where people blow each other up is in N. Ireland and even there it's pretty much concentrated in Belfast. AND... on top of that they usually give warning that something is going to blow up so people can get out of the way. Unlike drive -by shootings and gang stuff in the states. 🙄

Seev99 or Nate, do either of you guys know if this would mean that we could do part of our clinicals in the UK, specifically Scotland? I lived there for a few months last year studying holistic medicine and absolutely fell in love with the country. If I could, that would be awesome. Edinburgh has some great medical schools including the University where Darwin studied. Hope it means we can study there too.

Do you know if your school allows you to do international rotations?
I know my school allows us to do 3 months outside of the country and I plan on taking advantage of this.

You should check this with your school. There are schools that allow you to take electives at foreign universities.

What school do you go to?

The kewl thing about UMDNJ-SOM is that I know some people who have some done rotations even in Canada. It helps in choosing a school which gives you some flexibility. UMDNJ-SOM is definitely one of those schools.

It depends on your school and the hospital/school you would like to do the rotation at. I know for UMDNJ we can absolutely do international rotations pretty much anywhere in the world that there is a hospital willing to sponsor us. I would not have come here if this wasn't so because one of my passions is international medicine.

Hey Nate, thanks for the heads up. My top choice school is UNE and they allow you to do clinicals during year 4 anywhere you want and can get a sponser. So I would love to get back over to Scotland and maybe head down to New Zealand too. Where have you been or plan on going?

UNE is a great school, I loved it there when I interviewed and they are flexible with rotations which is good. I have been to Honduras and plan to do a rotation there and I would also like to do one in India if possible. Maybe Cuba will have changed by my 4th year and then I can go there and see my family, but as it is now that is out of the question.

I think it is crazy to think or even have a doubt that DOs would be incapable. What the he!!, they get the same education as MDs and in addition to this, are taught helpful adjuncts to treatments not available in the MD curriculum.
My goodness, people really need to get educated about DOs.

Remember we are talking about the international stage here and that DO is a rather modern American creation. Medicine is ancient but Osteopathic Medicine is in its infancy. We have a hard enough time educating the American public about our profession let alone other countries. However, most developing countries accept our aid and the word is spreading throughout the world about us which is, perhaps unfortunately, through the effort of the AOA. It should and could be happening faster but at least it is happening as is evident by the UK giving us full practice rights.

An anatomy professor here at NSU, Khin Tu M.D., F.R.C.S. had a great deal to do with promoting D.O.'s in the UK, and testified for the government this past summer.

NSU has just started an international exchange program in Sweden, where you can do 2 of your required months of rural medicine rotation. The 3rd required month is completely elective and can be done anywhere in the world there is a hospital or community health center that will sponsor you.

Hi! Just a quick question for a friend of mine, are DOs then fully recognized in Sweden then without any restrictions?
