I know it says that UAB gives out institutional scholarships. For first years it says the scholarships are based on MCAT score. Does anyone know the extent of scholarships they give (half, full, etc) and the usual MCAT score that gets one. Thanks.

Actually the scholarships are based on two of three criteria:

1. MCAT 30 or more
2. Committee ratings of 9 or above
3. GPA of 3.75

So, you only have to meet two of these stipulations. They are for $5,000/year and are renewable each year as long as you remain in a certain part of the class... Oh, you also have to be an Alabama resident. I'm trying to find the url, but my computer is not cooperating.

I'm looking at doing the Rural Loan program - I'll work in a rural area for 5 years (or so) and have my debt paid. I like the fact that you can apply at any point and get funding for ALL your medical education, so I don't plan on signing anything until I'm absolutely sure I'm heading for a career in pediatrics. Good luck and hope to see you July 29!

The MCAT scholarship are generally small and usually need based, because of the very low tuition. I think they are for in-state only, but dont hold me to that. I know the rural program is a good route if you know exactly what you are going to do, but you are very limited and pay big if you try to get out of it.

Cool, yeah I know the scholarships your talking about, but those aren't the institutional ones, I dont think at least. Becuase I'm out of state, and I called Mark Martin and he said these scholarships are based either on merit or need and the ones based on merit are based on the MCAT. Also, he said they don't differ between resident and non resident, unlike the scholarship you mentioned. I would have asked them how much they give and what MCAT score usually but I forgot and havent been able to get in touch with him.

Here it is:

And it doesn't say anything about being an Alabama resident - I think I was getting that confused with the EDP.

Good luck again!

It doesn't say anything about residency - so sorry about that. Good luck - are you coming to UAB?

sorry for the double post - I thought it didn't work the first time!

Not sure yet, my going depends on financial stuff. But just to let you know in case your curious, the link you posted is for a different scholarship that I'm talking about. Because that one says you dont have to apply. Go to page 8 or 9 in the financial aid book you should have gotten. There you will see the scholarship I'm talking about. You had to apply for that one, or send in a small application.

I would email Mr Martin, he returned my question this morning within a few hours.

Oooohhhh.... I see the one you're talking about Logan, sorry. I didn't apply for that one because I figured my need wouldn't be great enough anyway. With my husband's salary and my working last year, plus my dad's info, my EFC was pretty big, so I figured I didn't have much of a chance. Plus, my MCAT isn't spectacular. If I do well enough next year, maybe I'll apply, because then my salary won't be as high. So - anyway, hope it works out for you!

They were also due by April 15.
