UBuffalo waitlist --- 2007 --------- PART 2

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
ooOo...I'll learn with you!!

i wonder if they have a snowboarding club on campus, then me, you and cirrus can learn together 😀 they have a surfing club on campus where I'm at now, it's called Doctors with Boards

hey hopefulmedstudent; there are always other options beside carribean schools. i heard you'll have to test extra tests as a foreign grad to enter residency but some carribean schools are reputable. i would apply to a few post bac programs just in case. if you go to the aamc website, there are a few that will offer you conditional acceptances once complete. drexel has one so does oregon. but i'm really really hoping that you don't need to enter them and get ACCEPTED soon off the waitlist.

one of the things i find about med schools is that they are supposed to be compassionate people but often times they seem cruel and heartless with outright rejections. oh well, another week is awaiting with good news...i find that hanging around people who you trust and feel comfortable with really help pass the day by. Good luck again!

Oh boy, today's Tuesday! Maybe they'll have lots and lots of withdrawals to process today from the weekend, and thus lots and lots of acceptances.

One can only hope!

Funny thing you guys are mentioning the carribean, my uncle actually hinted about this to me yesterday, which made me a little sad.

Anyways...come on Buffalo, send me some love!

well - look at the bright side....if we don't get off the wait list and the Caribbean is all we have, at least it's kind of like a 4 year vacation (minus all the med school work...)

Seriously though, if I don't get in I am going to reapply and I'll apply to DO schools the second time around. I think I'll have a much better chance there, if I can't make it into an MD program....the Caribbean is just a little too far away for me. 😎

sending out positive vibes to all the waitlisters ~~~~~~~~~~~
(thats my interpretation of vibes-haha)
👍

Is anyone else applying to a Caribbean school as a back up? Or is everyone reapplying if they don't get in?

Hi Everyone! I have been reading this forum for awhile now. You guys all seem sooooo amazing. I hope I make it in. I am waitlisted for Buffalo also and checking constantly to see if anything changes. I already applied to St. George's in the Caribbean as a backup and if I do not make it to Buffalo, that is where I will be. I do not want to go through the whole process again!!! 😡

Good Luck to everyone!

Thanks so much! By the way, I was trying to look for that on the aamc website, and I couldn't find it. Do you by any chance know the link?

Hahaha, cali water is alright, matters which part you go to. Northern Cali water is freezing, So cal water is warmer. I wish I knew how to surf, but i can't balance myself on that damn board.

Plus its scary when you fall and the tide flips you around

Good luck everyone... lets get into the middle third this week :luck:

hey hopefulmedstudent. go to the aamc website and in the search button, type in "post bac program" then you'll be connected to the link.

i also applied to st george's the first time i applied to med school. i deferred them and still am accepted at their school. they seem really nice and kept sending me cool stuff, definitely more caring than buffalo. but i thought being an IMG would be an extra hurdle. i dunno, st george's is supposed to be the best carribean med school. people tell me that st. george's is akin to harvard in the carribean and ross university is like yale. i also got accepted to ross, haha. i was really really overly paranoid the first time around even though i didn't get into any US schools the first time. i did all sorts of crazy things like trying to enroll in the navy (i got the navy HPSP-full ride to med school scholarship) just to see if it'll help my apps but military life is too strict and rigid so i stayed away from that path. what a long journey this has been for me. hopefully movement soon today.

dang--no news? this wait is verging on a form of torture...

Is anyone else applying to a Caribbean school as a back up? Or is everyone reapplying if they don't get in?

I would apply to the top Osteopathic schools before thinking about the Caribbean. If you look at places like St.Georges their class sizes are in excess of 400 and are continuing to expand (UBuffalo's class is only 130 for comparison). This means you will get very little help if any in the event that you have problems with the materials. Getting quality rotations may be a problem also since you are competing against so many fellow students. Then there are administrative hurdles to contend with for medical licensure coming from a foreign medical school. Last but not least, there are personal comfort issues with living in these poor third world islands ie no running water and power outages during hurricanes, limited choice of foods etc.

With osteopathic schools, you stay in the US, can get fully licensed in all states and have quality faculty that are equivalent to US MD schools. Their students have also performed well in match lists with matches into the most competitive MD residencies like Radiation Oncology and Neurosurgery. Just some food for thought before commiting to moving so far away and living rough for 4 years.

Not that it makes much of a difference, but you only spend two years on st. georges, and then you spend the next two in the states doing your rotations.

i agree with bluemirage althought i don't think grenada is that poor cause the buildings look new and there is plenty of food/water from the CDs i got from them. the only trouble is the competition and the distance from home/ licensing can be tricky (my interviewer told me). you actually do only spend 1.5 years in the carribean then they transfer you to the states to do clinical rotations, which you would have to move from state to state to do it, that can be costly. living abroad is also really really expensive (my interviewer told me that he had $200,000 or more in debt) whereas in the states you'll save almost half of that. i was really really tempted to go to st george's but my professor told me not to. my friend who goes there says that there are very little clinical exposures in the first year. then they transfer you to another island called st.vincent's that's where you'll do clinical prep for rotations and take your boards. expect to move around a lot as a IMG. the nice thing is that the scenery is nice but then you'll have practically no time to enjoy it cause you'll be busy competing and getting yourself ready to go back to the states as soon as possible.

it's ironic though cause st george's does seem to have some great residency matches! take a look at their matchlist.

yes hopefulmed, let's hope you don't have to go through all this and that you just get in to UB this year :luck::luck::luck:

good luck to everyone else waiting too, c'mon cirrus!!!

Just to clarify, I had mentioned that they have those fresh water/electricity problems only when hurricanes hit that area and not on a regular day-to-day basis. Dmcchung is right about the new buildings/facilities etc. They have a nice match list but you must be careful looking at those. First of all there are 400+ students there so obviously the very top people will get good matches given such as huge sample size. Once you look at % of total getting into prestigious residencies you will find it much less than schools here. Factor in the fact that they have not indicated how many people did not match or failed the USMLE on the first attempt (their 90+ pass rates includes those that take it multiple times). Ultimately these schools will allow you to reach your goal of becoming a physician but you will have to work extra hard compared to US MD and DO students because of the factors that I had mentioned in my earlier post. As evidenced by a small percentage of people that match into competitive places, it is possible to excel when you attend school down there but it is all up to you.

wow, no movement today??

i know! this is rough!

edit- i am freaking out a little...trying not to...but i am.

Conscious thoughts: Relax, middle third usually gets in. Practice positive thinking. i.e. 'I WILL get into Buffalo' 'I CAN do a triathlon' 'I LOVE raisins'

SubConscious thoughts: 😱 :barf:

YAY FOR CIRRUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats.....that makes me so happy 😀

Congrats Cirrus83 !!!! I KNEW you'd get in !!! 👍 :hardy:

Does anyone know what's up with DrHank and DrBMX? They've been on the upper third for 2-3 months now. Have they gotten accepted yet or withdrew? I think they withdrew, so it looks like maddycat15 is next!

cirrus, i think i just added you on facebook, but who knows...i am extremely bad at guessing who's who 😛

Cirrus83, congrats man! I hope you're celebreating

So, I gotta a question for you, do you plan on skateboarding at UB? If so, i now have a skateboaring buddy 🙂 haha. BTW, what deck, trucks, wheels, etc do you have on your set up?

Thank god! Yay for cirrus83 getting in and yay for the waitlist still moving.

Haha I'm pretty bad so we'll see, lol. My setup has no real street cred at all though, I bought a Kryptonics complete on the cheap, so it has kryptonics abec-3 bearings and kryptonics wheels, a pretty bootleg 9 ply deck (at least it's concave and the grip tape works well), and kryptonics trucks (that look cheaper than their nicer ones). I bought the entire thing on what was basically a whim so I didn't really do a lot of research obviously. Just saw ABEC-3 and figured it couldn't be too terrible for just rolling around if it had decent bearings.

What's your setup?

wow! cirrus! congrats ... this is a great day after all...someone got in we know!

yay!

Hahaha, let me guess, you go the kyptonics at dicks or something?

I got a mini-logo blank (ultralight weight concave deck) with extra grippy grip tape. I was gonna get a blink or an element, but then i thought why pay the extra for the graphic when i can get an ultralight one. Plus, i put on a bunch of band stickers on it, so my back doesnt look so bare. For my trucks, i got a sweet pair of independent (forgot the exact model #) got some pretty nice bones red bearings (smooth like nothing else). As for wheels, i got a pair of generic streeet/tech 55mm's.

I was thinking about converting my short board into a long board. I grew out of doing tricks and whatnot, and now i just use m board to ride around. So i was thinking of getting a new long board, but using my same old trucks that are put on risers and buying a pair of 75 or 85a wheels 😱 hahaha, we'll see how that goes.

now find munchkin on facebook and we have just formed the 2007 officers for the UB boarders club (snow, surf, and skate):laugh::laugh:

do you also snow surf and skate? I briefly learned how to surf (though i suck and i cant swim well ), but I can snow and skate pretty well.

ummm...i just decided toxicgate should be an officer instead of me

ummm...i just decided toxicgate should be an officer instead of me

hahah, i would love to if i get in :scared: , lets hope the get to the middle 1/3

I can neither Snow, Surf or Skate :laugh::laugh:

haha, i love teaching ppl how to skate and snow, hopefully we can hit up greek peak (I went there all the time when i was at Cornell) at some point and snowboard away 🙂

Haha...Dick's is pretty close...I actually saw it at Sport's Authority (which is the exact same store as Dick's but in the NYC area it's called Sport's Authority) and there was one that was out of it's plastic wrap so I rode the board around the store. There wasn't a price tag around and I was too lazy to go find out how much it was (I was there to buy something else) since it was basically just for fun that I had even tried it.

Then later that same day I'm at Target (yes the groans and moans from any real skateboarder begin) and I see the exact same board again...and this time it had a price to go with it...and I could no longer resist my impulse buying demons.

I haven't tried a longboard, my brother wants to get one so maybe I'll check his out (he'll probably get a more legit board than me). Good luck on the conversion though, are you gonna make the risers yourself or do they make them for people who want bigger wheels?

I've been reading up on those crazy freebord's though...the videos look insane (and also insanely dangerous). I can't even snowboard so it'd probably be a horrible idea to get one lol.

I hope you hear soon Toxic!! I need a teacher so that i can be an official member of the UB Boarders! haha...

I went to Greek Peak once to learn how to ski from my lab mates. It was awesome. But Snow boarding looks cooler!

BTW thanks for all the congrats everyone 😍
And glad that I'm helping move the waitlist along too for you guys...hopefully everyone will get acceptances really soon!

Purometal, I dunno where the remaining "original top 1/3rd" people went but I'm sure you and avery will get in soon 👍
