i didn't write one cause it seemed like they gave us a final ranking the same day we interviewed, do you guys really think it helps? cause i'll do it 🙂 i don't want them to think i'm not interested just because i had other acceptances

haha, when i talked to him, i was like "but the SDN thread from last year said that you guys were in the middle 1/3 by the end of May". He responded by saying don't believe everything that you read online.

hey hopefulmedstudent, the first paragraph, i talked about how UB fits into my future aspirations, highlighting the special things I found about UB. The second paragraph, i emphasized new things i've been doing. then the third, i focused on lessons i learned from those experiences and how i can apply that to UB's educational environment. I really think it makes logical sense that if you are in the middle third or something, writing a letter showing interest really sets you apart from someone who's in the same position but did not show any interest. so yea, i hope it all will turn out the best.

I too wrote a letter to UB saying that they were my top choice sometime after being waitlisted and before my acceptance. A three paragraph narrative story of everything that has changed since the interview and a detailed explanation of why Buffalo is so wonderful seemed excessive to me, so mine was significantly shorter than DMC's. I will never know whether it made a difference (I HIGHLY doubt whether such a letter would get you accepted from the bottom third, but perhaps it could make the process a bit quicker for those in the upper third), but having sent it did give me some peace of mind that I had done everything I could to attend a school that I liked. Whatever works.

PS: I would be willing to guess that the reason that Mr. Rosso will not tell you where in each third you are is because of message boards like this. Would you want to get tons of calls complaining that 'somebody in the lower part of the upper third got accepted before me and I am still waitlisted in the middle of the upper third...'

I agree with you, plus I think it would be a great experience living with other med students. The other side though (with living alone) is it would be really quiet, etc (I havbe bad experiences living with major party all the time people, lol)

aww, sorry to hear that noeljan...it may be easier when you room with someone like a classmate who's studying alot like you. my current roomie is a med student at my school and i absolutely love her. we've never gotten into an argument, but it totally helps to have separate bathrooms

If we were all in the same class and work this hard together, we will probably get like 15 points above the national average in the USMLE as oppose to the 5 points previously posted. (I really don't know how the USMLE is scored, so i'm just randomly throwing numbers out)

Im also worried about housing if I get off the waitlist. I really dont want to live alone if i got to UB. I love my quite time, but i know i will go crazy if I have to live by myself for the whole year. It's always nice to chat it up when we have down time or are taking a study break, or just having someone to celebrate stuff with. Anyways, I will also be looking for a roomie if i get off the list.

I spoke with Mr. Rosso a couple days ago. He told me that they dont even read any additional letters that are sent. All they do is put it in your folder because the waitlist was finalized. That made me sad. 🙁

That's right. Back in jan, Mr. Rosso said that a LOI will NOT change your position on the waitlist. Once you've received a score nothing can change it. But to feel better I sent one anyway.

Considering how much money gas is these days that might not even make any sense. I mean it's 3000 miles, and moving trucks don't exactly get great mileage, so you're looking at probably $800-$900 worth of gasoline alone, plus the cost of renting the truck, plus the cost of staying at hotels each night (even if you're hardcore and you guys take turns driving it's still going to take you 3-4 days unless you just don't stop), and you could have probably purchased a new bed and a new couch (not a very nice one, but a new one anyways).

Well I don't have any brilliant tips except that Costco's/Sam's Club/BJ's has good prices on quality mattresses, although they don't deliver (except on the websites, you can order them online but it's more money than in-store so it's cheaper if you can rent a pickup or something on the cheap). I ended up buying a Sealy Queen bed there for like $350 or something when there was a coupon for it that took like $120 off, and basically I bought it when I was moving into an apartment so the moving truck was used to get the mattress from the store to my place.

Buy a cheap Ikea couch or something and you're good to go (actually, scratch that, I hate cheap couches, and I'm scared of used ones because bedbugs are apparently back [although this is apparently a NYC thing that bedbugs are back]).

Personally I'm going to ship some stuff, then drive up with the rest. Or just drive up with the bare neccessities then get stuff whenever I come home to visit lol.

called, mr. rosso picked up and informed me that i was taken off the waitlist and now accepted.
i interviewed on sept 9 so this was a great test of patience.
