Hey guys,

So this isn't a "is it okay to take classes at CC" thread, but a similar type question.

I took my general biology and general chemistry back in 06-07, and I am just coming back to do post-bacc.

So here's the deal, I needed to retake 3 of those classes, (2 biology, 1 chemistry), and I am retaking them at the same school I did undergrad, which is UCI for 2 reasons.

When I decided to go back to school, the deadlines for semester system schools have passed already for summer, and since those classes were at a quarter based school, I thought it'd be better to retake at a quarter based system and can be more sure which one I would get grade replacement in.

Now here is the question, after I finish these 3 retakes at UCI, I plan on taking ochem and physics and any other upper div biology classes that i HAVENT started at a CC, only because it is way cheaper and closer to my house.

What are your opinions on taking my lower-level classes at a UC but taking all my upper div classes at a CC?

I know what everyone is saying about CC's, but I'm just curious if taking all my upper level classes at CC would be frowned upon BECAUSE I took the general biology and chemistry at UC's and going over to CC's to take the upper divs.

Any input would be appreciated.

Assuming you get A's in everything, what is your GPA going to be?

assuming I get A's in all 3 of those retake classes,

Gen Bio 1 - A-
Gen Bio 2 - A (retake)
Gen Bio 3 - A (retake)
Gen Chem1 - B
Gen Chem2 - A (retake)
Gen Chem3 - A

My cGPA is around 3.0, but my science GPA is based on above and the classes I have left (ochem, physics, upper div bio)

Planning on retaking some non-science classes next summer as well to boost cGPA. How much is TOO much retakes of a class? So far I have 3 shown above.

I would assume that although having too many retakes is frowned upon, that it is not as frowned upon as having bad grades with no retake.

1) It is a very very good idea to take all of your retakes at the same school and always within the same system ( quarter vs semester).

2) Now I am not to sure about Cali CCs but most CCs don't offer any classes outside of the freshman to sophomore level. However if one does I would advice you do not take any upper lever course work at a CC. It is not that it is frowned upon it is that most medical schools don't have a good comparison of you with other applicants at the CC level. They need a university base line.

I think you sound take your orgo 1 and 2 and physics 1 and 2 at the CC and take upper level courses like genetics and molecular bio at a university or small college. You can feel free to pad your GPA with microbiology or astronomy at the CC as well.

Good luck

I have also never heard of a CC giving upper division credit. I live in California, albeit Northern California.

I'm going to let you foreigners on a little secret: the way we know if you aren't originally from California is if you call it "Cali."

so the CC class I want to take ochem/physics at does not have a lab for physics.

Any suggestions?

You can take labs at other colleges. It shouldn't conflict.

I'm from the Orange County/Irvine area and there's definitely no upper divs at the cc. I was trying to retake Immuno and couldn't find it anywhere. Doing "open enrollment" at a cal state (LB or Fullerton) would work though. I just cuolodn't afford it and needed the cheaper option so retook my chem class at a jc.

hey physcigirl, thanks for that info. I am in fullerton so cal state fullerton classes might be a good option, but do you by any chance know the class sizes of cal states?

I always perform better in a smaller class function, and was wondering if these classes are huge like the ones at UC's.

The classes are huge (probably like UCI's lecture sizes) and many are difficult to get into since you have last priority. The bigger problem I found was that many of their classes are 3-units due to the semester system, which wouldn't replace any of my 4-unit quarter classes.

However, if you are looking into Open University through CSU Fullerton then I would recommend the FIRST thing you do is go talk to Lyn Richie-Walker, the academic advisor for Open University. She is VERY helpful, and not just about CSU Fullerton. She's also very nice (a rarity among academic counselors). I didn't need an appointment or anything, I just went in and waited a few minutes for a drop-in advising session. She had a lot of helpful recommendations that ultimately helped me realize I needed to find a quarter-system school not a semester-system school. Her phone number is 657-278-7645 and email is [email protected].

I know it's a bit of drive, but have you looked into Open University through CSU Pomona? Since they are one of the few CSU's on the quarter system, you'll have at least an easier time finding classes that will be better suited for your re-takes.

I found it very difficult to enroll in classes at CSU Long Beach as well, but I guess it's worth a shot. I'd try CSU Pomona before CSULB.

Uhhh... 4 quarter units = 2.7 Semester units.

Good because I am not .... My whole family is from the midwest and we shorten everything down to a pseudoname.... It is just how we roll... and in Jacksonville everybody calls everything a shorten abbreviated like word or nick name... like Orlando is O-town or just ORL. St.Louis is STL. Atlanta is ATL. Tallahassee is just Talli....

Hey milosavljevic, thank you for that info

I am actually going to see Mrs. Walker soon, and I'm actually not retaking any classes at CSUF. I'm taking the retakes at UCI, since its a quarter based system, and starting the ochem, physics series at CSUF.

I hear it is pretty hard to get in to the classes though... we'll see...

thanks for all your inputs guys!
