Guess the e-mails finally pushed through. Received my rejection at 4:50pm. Time to officially ignore this thread. Edinburgh here I come!

Good luck to all of you who have interviewed or still have to interview! 🙂

Just received my official rejection from UC Davis. I was expecting that from the beginning, but now I know it is real...damn, oh well life moves on. 😛

Sorry DVMDream & chii chan. 🙁

I got the lost in cyber rejection from Davis a bit ago for a total of 2 rejections from Davis. 😳

Rejected. I didn't see any mention of a file review. Does UC Davis not do them?

😎 just got my rejection letter - it stings, but isn't as soul crushing as I imagined it would be... I think I psyched myself up so much for the rejection that receiving the actual letter was a little anticlimactic. Oh well - there's always next year.
Until then, there is always happy hour 😀

Good luck to everyone who has interviews coming up - kick ass!!

As a third time applicant (though first time to Davis,) I know what it is like to get rejected two years in a row... Looking back now, there are so many opportunities that have enriched my life in those last two years that I know it happened for a reason. Hindsight always beats out what you feel now, no matter how tough it is. The one thing I have learned is that perseverance pays off eventually, so keep after your dream and one day it will be yours! Finally in the third cycle I have a Davis interview and a Western interview, so at least it worked for me!

I have issues. I didn't want to check, but the neurotic side in me had to. Maybe it's the habit of checking this one for what seems like months now.

Thanks. This was my second rejection from Davis too.

I'm wondering the same thing. Does anyone know?

What's weird is that I got interviews or acceptances from every single school I applied (that I met prereqs for since I messed up on 2 schools with this) to except for UPenn (whom I still have yet to hear anything from) and Davis. However, all the schools that I had interviews at so far, have turned into rejections, and I had to cancel 2 of my interviews due to conflicts. But I at least had a chance with all the schools!

Are the Cal Poly, SLO grads not doing well at Davis now and they don't want to take a chance with me because of my undergraduate school? I'm sure they look at that, right?

Davis does offer file reviews: I know Nyanko has gotten one in the past.

Also, despite this being my first time applying to davis (or anywhere for that matter) I have contacted them twice, about a year apart, since college graduation to see what i should be doing to ensure that I am a strong applicant (Davis is my absolute #1 and i wanted to be certain that i was ready 🙂 ). Once i talked with Kim O'Bryan in a scheduled phone conversation and once i flew up and met with her in person.

The advice they gave me was extremely useful; when i applied this year i got an interview! :xf:😍:xf:

They are really busy right now so they may not be able to schedule until april or may but the input is totally worth it.

If they didnt give you a phone number i would just look up an email for the admissions office. The fact that you are following up in combination with the advice they give you is certain to make you a stonger applicant next year.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. Llama Slug I will definitely e-mail someone about a file review but I might give them a while since I know they are busy. Good Luck at your interview. I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you to get in..you deserve it!! :luck::xf:

Nothing is required besides suitable attire and a good attitude. I brought a nice folder (leather bound type that had my undergrad's logo on it) with a pad of paper and pen. No resume, personal statement, etc. The interview panel has their own laptops with your application pulled up so they don't need hard copies of anything.

I did write a few questions down for the interviewers on my pad of paper and some important things I wanted to bring up if given a chance. Otherwise, they don't ask you for anything.

Agreed - I did the same!

Definitely bring a good attitude and a smile! 🙂

I'm wondering the same thing. Does anyone know?

My UCD rejection email from 2008 has been lost in the ether of the change to gmail for UCD email accounts. From what I recall, though, there was a blurb that if I would like to discuss my application to call a number and set up a time with Yasmin, but I was instructed not to call and schedule until May, and was scheduled for the beginning of June when I did call.

edit: I'm doing a telephone file review with Jennifer Mailey from Cornell the morning of my UC Davis interview. This is either the dumbest thing I've done in awhile (ok, maybe just the dumbest since Saturday) or the smartest thing I've done in awhile.

Hey now chii chan! I'm a Cal Poly grad too and there's actually more people in my class from CP than any other university. It's definitely not a university bias.

I have no idea why they reject some great applicants. 🙁 Truly, I didn't think I was a good applicant and applied to 13 schools because of it. There's no telling what they think makes a good applicant. And it all boils down to a guess - who will do well in vet school and who will do well as a veterinarian. I'm sorry so many of you are disappointed this application cycle. I hope most of you will apply again next year or accept an invitation from another vet school. Despite how stinking HARD it is, vet school is everything I wished it would be. 😍

Thanks DVMDream! My fingers are crossed for you to get in at Washington and Western! :xf::luck::xf:

I didn't mean going to CP was a bad thing at all! I LOVED my time there and every experience I got. And I've also seen a huge number of people from each class who attended CP. I was trying to find some type of logic, that maybe they don't want as many CP students this year.

I didn't do a file review last year since I got to sit down and talk with Dr. LeFebvre after my rejection. He said I was on the cusp of getting an interview invite, but just barely didn't make it. This time, I KNOW my application was better than last year, so the rejection bothers me. Just trying to rationalize, I guess.

This year's rejection letter (and last year's, I checked and it's the exact same wording with a different PDF linked) said nothing about a file review. I guess I'll email them in April when they're not as busy.

OT - anyone here live in or around LA?

Good luck, guys!

I do (LA as in Los Angeles, not Louisiana?). Can I help with something?

Wow I can't believe the first week of interviews is already almost over!

Unfortunately you're getting compared with whatever the applicant pool that year is, so that's what makes it such a crapshoot from year to year. I can definitely see that this year must be crazy with all the really really good applicants who didn't get interview invites.

My rejection letter from 08 was not in .pdf format, just the body of an email. Like, two lines. But it was a post-interview rejection so maybe those were done differently.

Mine was the body of the e-mail not .pdf file for me. But it was definitely longer than two lines. Well, it a few lines and then an explanation of how they reviewed candidates.

Sorry, it's not in PDF format, but there is a PDF link on it that sends you to last year's applicant stats.

They probably did do the rejections differently for those who received interviews. I know Ohio applicants got different letters based on their status.

yes is there something us So Cal people can help you with? I live about an hour and a half away from LA right now, but San Diego is also pretty close (1 hour)

Hah! Um, planning a little vaycay... a cruise with the hub... I hate to go to Cali and just go airport -> boat -> airport since neither of us have ever been there... but LA is scary (small town Oklahoma, anyone?) and we're poor... well, poor after we spend our tax refund on a cruise, lol. But I'm hoping it's the last extended vacation I have a chance to take for a while, if I get the news I'm hoping for in a few weeks. So... we're doing it while we can. And so... well, I'm not sure if we'll be able to do much, but it may be worth a shot. 🙂 That's all! Not trying to interrupt the thread too much!

Ain't no cruisin' from up there. Well, maybe to see Alaska or something, but... we're saving glaciers for when we're old and boring. :d

I will meet you someday, though, my pink haired friend. SAVMA? Mebbe?

Got my rejection, too. 🙁

Damn you, Davis, you'll never know how good we could have been together. I tried so hard to please you, and it was never enough. Someday, you'll see me and and Kansas walking hand in hand, laughing, smiling at an inside joke, and you'll be so jealous. But then it will be too late, you had your chance.

San Diego's quite a bit further from LA than 1 hour. It's probably a little over an hour to Irvine/Orange County. Nonetheless, it seems a few of us aren't all that far away.

hey everyone!

new to posting with SDN...i have an interview with davis later next week, and had at least one pressing question:

what, if anything, should be brought to the interview? a resume? padfolio? copy of app? copy of personal statement? anything? or just a suit and a smile?

i know that this has sort of been answered in the general "interview attire" thread with mixed answers, but wanted some feedback directly relevant to the davis process...people who have interviewed before, what did you bring?

kinda freaking out here but good luck to everyone who has had/is having interviews, and bummer to those with rejections...it so easily could have been anyone....

I think that your list sounds great. I was told to bring a Portfolio by my undergrad advisor and I think that it just gives you something to hold (and to prevent fidgeting 🙂 ). A resume, personal statement and copy of app are probably not necessary, but I think it helped me remember what information that had so that I didn't repeat what they knew already. Also, it can't hurt to have, so why not?
Also, I will preface this by saying that I have no idea how others feel about this, but I was told it was definitely okay to write down questions that you might have, so that's what I used my notepad for. Know your questions in advance, so you don't have to read them word for word, but looking down to reming yourself can help prevent a lot of "Ummmm, what was that question, I know I had one" type of phrases - making you seem more prepared and more professional. And I would recommend to write down (a shorthand paraphrasing of) their answers. I think it shows that you really are interested in the answers as opposed to just asking q's to ask q's. Just a fun tip 🙂

Also, I won't be 25 until September so I can't really rent a car either. Bah.

(I have to go to bed even though I'm still wound up from that interview... oh, and the coffee. Hah.)

Some states will let you rent a car if you're at least 21, it's just a little more expensive - just something to look into. 🙂

Yes I know, but I am between the two, therefore the times to each, very roughly.

To keep this on topic, thanks to all the current students for being so helpful! Start my drive Sunday.

It is a pretty sprawling city and you need to drive to get anywhere. On the positive side, for the most part you would be very unlikely to walk into any unsafe areas. Not sure what your interested in but lots of choices to choose from. Outdoor activities top the list of course (beach, surf, mountains) along with the touristy stuff (Disney, Universal Studios, Hollywood) etc.

Have fun.

Hey Guys,

I, too, got my rejection letter yesterday. It didn't really phase me but that's probably because I spent all of last week bawling my eyes out anytime someone left me alone!

However, I was VERY motivated to get my file review and had already e-mailed Yasmin Williams on my way home from the interview workshop. She told me to call the office. They will be starting the process on May 3rd. I have the first appointment with her at 9am!

Love it!!! Also rejected....

Thats great! Make sure you show up prepared and well dressed. This opportunity is like a mini-interview. You have a chance to leave an impression, so make sure you leave a good one. I did a file review with her and it went really really well. I walked away knowing the mistakes I had made which was such a relief. I think I had impressed her as well; she recognized me when I showed for my interview the next year.

And be prepared to take criticism. She does not beat around the bush, so if you can't handle taking criticism without being defensive or arguing, the file review might not go particularly well.

Good luck heylodeb!

Right now, Hertz is waiving the underage fee for drivers 21-24 years old, effective until the end of March. So that might be worth checking out, given that under-25 surcharges can double the cost of a rental.

My Davis interview is in 10 days! I've been counting down for what feels like my whole life, and now that there are only 10 days to go, I feel a little less strange for keeping a tally 😀 I can't wait to see the school again and meet some of you first-year students!

I know this was a little while ago but I think that's super smart. While I'm sure the two schools have different criteria or whatnot, knowing what one school considers to be your weak points can definitely let you slip in some explanations or defensive maneuvers during the Davis interview.

I know, for some reason I feel more pressure and excitement for this one than any other interview. What day are you interviewing? I am interviewing the afternoon of the 8th (Monday), so I'll be there from Sunday afternoon to Tuesday morning. Maybe we can meet up for dinner along with some of these lovely first years (and nyanko? will you be around?).

The car and the hotel will probably both prove a bit to expensive for us to add on. It's not until the second week of May (after finals). I think I would most like see the San Diego zoo... not really interested in Disney or universal or any of the Hollywood type stuff. And we'll hopefully seen some awesome beaches on the cruise (in Cabo?) so it really just a matter of being IN Cali without seeing any Cali. But renting a car, paying extra, trying to find a cheap hotel, and umm... I think we both get lost pretty easily. :d

Oooh! Be sure to go to the San Diego Wildlife Park, it's really cool. I got to watch a stampede the last time I went.

TT, have you thought about flying into San Diego? If you are primarily going for a cruise, the harbor where the cruise ships are can be seen from the airport and therefore would be a relatively cheap cab ride. Reasonable accommodations might be harder to find...

And if you have to stay overnight, the wildlife park has a program where you can sleep in the park in a tent with the "wild" animals. It isn't very expensive if I recall. I agree with CorporateFatCat that it is pretty neat. It is almost like being on safari - well, not really, but as close as you are going to get in the U.S.

I also agree about the Wild Animal Park. They have a lot of land for some of the animals, which is so different from the typical caged zoos. You can feed giraffes too!

OOOoo.. and there is also a baby elephant out there born on Feb. 14. 2010! He's so cute!
