UC Davis CO 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just talked to Donna in the office and she said that, yes, letters will continue to go out during next week. (to which I replied - oh yay - two weeks of ulcers!) However, they were able to contact everyone today who didn't reply to their e-mails from Friday, Feb 12th.

She also said that rejection letters have begun to be sent out today, and will continue through the next couple days (weeks?) so be prepared for those suckers 👎 as well.

Hmmm... Kathleen on the phone today said only letters today and tomorrow, and mentioned nothing about next week. I wish they could tell me sooner so I know if I need someone to cover my shift at work and send an e-mail to my teacher saying I'll be missing class on Saturday. I really want to go if I have an interview. I don't mind waiting to schedule it until almost last minute since I live about 45 minutes away. Is there a slier way I could ask (about my status)?

Guess I'll be on the lookout for any type of e-mail then - interview or rejection. Good to know. =/

Dang it, with the workshop on Saturday just wish I knew one way or the other. I can't afford to go running up there if I'm already rejected, but on the other hand if I pass on the workshop and get an invite next week, I'll be so pissed at missing that opportunity to give myself a bit of an edge.

do you really get an edge if you go to the workshop? i just watched the video (most of it at least as it was quite long, but still nice that they offered it) and felt ok about the interview

I'm not sure which is more disturbing, waking up and realizing the dream I had last night that I got an interview invitation wasn't real, or the khaki shorts with white socks and black clogs outfit that I wore to the workshop. Yikes.

I know, I was just being silly. Besides, that the point, right? You go bitch on SDN and immediately everyone rushes in to reassure you. :d

LOL okay, i kinda figured, just makin sure 😀 and, i definitely felt loved, so your plan worked, hehe.

Well good luck at your interview!! We're rooting for ya!

I just got an invitation to interview!! I almost don't believe it, I am shaking. And its just an interview. O gosh I thought they didn't like me. And I sound crazy. Looks like I am loading up the car and coming to the workshop this weekend

Scratch that, the drive is a little too crazy for me to do at this late of notice, but hope everybody has fun!

And good luck to those still waiting, good things are still happening:luck:

just got an interview! I live in La and am thinking about trying to drive or fly there today. Any of the current students think i should really drop everything and drive there today? I work sunday and really want to go, but I am gonna have to make a second trip for the interview. i need some advice i am shaking so much that i cant make a rational decision!

So who here is actually coming to the orientation?

My hair is currently a burgundy/purplish color, since I was asked about it. Probably a little too purple for the vet school interview, and I'm going to work with it some more, but serviceable for workshop/orientation and Ph.D. interview purposes. 😀

I'm so sad that I'm not going to the orientation, especially after hearing everyone else talk about it 🙁 I'm an IS student, but currently finishing up my senior year in Missouri, so traveling to it would be expensive and highly inconvenient, on top of traveling to my interview later on. Maybe some of you can fill me in on what goes on tomorrow so that I don't feel so left out 😳

Anyway, I couldn't get any more excited about Davis than I already am, so I'll probably be fine without the workshop, lol.

Yay badcats (and everyone else)! Good luck to those of you who are still waiting.

So, when is everybody interviewing?

Wish I could be at the workshop tomorrow, but I can't justify TWO trip$ across the country during the semester.

Nyanko, since I won't see you at the orientation, I want pictures of the hair!

So it is now obvious that my application did not interest Davis at all. But I have a question: do they send rejection emails at least? or do they let you hanging there forever?

So who here is actually coming to the orientation?

Yay! I'm going. Currently sitting at the airport waiting for my flight and it is snowing really hard! I hope the flight gets out ok.

Can't wait to see some of you there!

I'm going too! Leaving for the airport in about half an hour.

Regrettably I dont't have fun hair... just blond.

Can't wait for tomorrow! (even if i am already in love with Davis)

What time does it start?

Congrats to everyone granted an interview here at Davis, and good luck to those of you still waiting!!

Anyone interested in lab animal medicine should stop by our club table during lunch tomorrow. I'll be there 🙂

Thanks, Nyanko. I've been here since September and didn't know about this. 😳

there's a bus that stops in the Health Sciences district by the genome center (relatively close to Valley, where the interviews will be held) and goes to the Silo Union. It's free since it's an on campus route, and the Silo has a lot of options (some chains, a crepe place, a sandwich place, coffee place, etc..).

You could also walk to the Silo if it's a nice day and your shoes aren't too uncomfortable - if you are a fast walker and take shortcuts it's like a 10 min walk.

Don't worry about making it here. Just watch the webcast/video. That's what I did and I got in.
👍

I honestly don't think it gives you an edge. If you get an interview, and I hope you do, just watch the video. Good luck! :luck:

Is that the time at which you're debuting the video? In Valley 1030? I might have to come in for that.

One more lecture and then into the media lab to put the finishing touches on the video! 2:20 pm on Saturday can NOT come soon enough!

I'm just posting this to set a personal best--5 posts in a row. Look at me go! You'd never guess we have a test Monday.

Congrats to all of you who got interviews this year! I'm very excited for you to join us.🙂

I'll be there tomorrow! I'm very excited! I'll be the girl with raccoon eyes because I couldn't sleep out of excitement/nervousness.

*sigh* I know I said I wouldn't go, but I kinda want to only because it would be cool to meet other SDNers going. But how depressing will it be to be there while bummed out about not getting an interview? I feel like such a loser, and like, what's the point they didn't want me anyway..
.:barf:I should stop posting on here when I'm depressed, sorry.

^^squibby: I know it's really hard to deal with - I have experienced rejection from Davis, and it was post-interview so I doubly felt like there must be something really wrong with me in person. it isn't QUITE over until you get the official email but I know how you feel, trust me. It's obviously up to you whether you want to come or not, but I will say that I came to the interview workshop last year when I didn't apply (when people who had gotten in over me were on the panel!) and I found it to be interesting and worthwhile. Caveat: my office on campus is like, one building away from Valley and it may have been different if I had to make a separate trip over.

I may have no voice because I've been playing Rock Band 2 as vocalist all night.

Chin up Squibby! I was rejected the first TWO times without an interview, so I also know how you feel. But you know what? Both times I was rejected, I had such an awesome year filled with so many opportunities that I would have missed had I started vet school right away.

The 2nd rejection, in particular, hurt the most but thank goodness I was rejected. I met my professor for grad school that year, took awesome grad school classes, did awesome research and made awesome friends. I even received a Morris fellowship, which is awesome because morris gives preference to past recipients. So if I apply for a post doc fellowship after vet school, I have a better chance now than a lot of other applicants.

I took a few extra physio/bio classes which totally prepared me for vet school. I grew a lot academically, but I also grew a lot professionally.

Overall, I am a better vet student now than I could have been last year or the year before. This is going to make me a better doctor. That is what counts.

So try not to get discouraged. Both my lab-mates were also rejected 3-4 times, and they are freaking amazing. Dr. Kevin Fitz-Gerald from Emergency Vets was also rejected his first time around.

Rejection can be awesome. Learn from it. Embrace it. If you can master this, trust me you will go far. 🙂

I have also been debating about whether I should go or not....however, I've decided that no matter how much it'll "hurt" to see all the actual invitees that it will be beneficial. For heaven's sake, I only live 30 minutes away and I need to start moving towards next year's app with hopefully as much excitment as I did this one! (I will be applying to more than one school next time around, lol)

Hope everyone has a great time at the workshop today!

P.S: Put in a good word for me, ey? 🙂

Thank you so much SheltURIgirl, what you said really makes me feel better. I'm just starting working at the neuro research lab on campus, and will be taking care of harbor seals at my volunteer job, so I will just take some time to focus on those things. And, I'll keep taking classes that will help me once I get in. I'm already taking neuro, a graduate seminar on environmental toxicology, microbial physiology and biochem, and hematology. Any other suggestions? I guess anatomy can't hurt, though I shudder at the word, and my school doesn't have anything but human anatomy courses. What about immunology?

Have fun today!

I decided late last night that I wasn't going because I don't have anything to wear. I will miss meeting some of you guys though.

Keep your chin up, squibby! You seem like a really dedicated person and it will definitely pay off. I know a vet who got rejected three times (from Davis) and when she did get in, she graduated in the top 5% of her class. She's an AMAZING vet. Don't give up!

Thanks. Hearing stories like that makes me feel better. I know I will eventually get in SOMEWHERE.

First off, congrats to everyone who got an invite! I just wanted to let you guys that are waiting know that I called yesterday to see if there were going to be invites sent out next week as well and they said that all the invites had gone out already and that next week they are starting to send the rejection letters. =( I know I was super stressed just not knowing one way or the other so I thought I'd let everyone else know in case they were obsessively checking email the way I was. I'm really sad to not even have gotten an invite, but I had an interview at Western last week so I consider myself lucky to at least still have one option open. Good luck to everyone interviewing over the next couple of weeks!

amen shelterURIgirl! anyone who has gotten a rejection letter dont let it get you down. I was rejected my first time and finally got an interview this year. I was waitlisted at western last year and also eventually rejected. and it hurt sooooo bad, but i have learned tons the last year. and it is a great experience with humility and self awareness. and just like shelterURIgirl said if you can master this you will go far. Dont give up if this is your dream it will happen for you if you keep trying. I tell myself that every day and if i get rejected again I will be a pro at applications right?!

Bummer. I wonder why they kept telling us they were sending out invites for the next few weeks? Well, I can't say this was unexpected. 🙁

Squibby, you are not alone. Look at everything you've accomplished so far, and the things you will accomplish in the future! 🙂

:wtf:

With all due respect, I would like to say that Davis' admissions dept. needs to stop changing their story and stop acting so manic.

Yes Squibby, take as many classes as you can and do well in them. I have taken a ton of classes in immunology, microbiology, virology, disease ecology, cell biology, pathology, etc. It has been beyond helpful.

Also, disease is kinda cool. I think a microbiology class is more important than an anatomy class because the anatomy is all about memorizing and forgetting, but stuff like micro and immuno totally fit into veterinary medicine in a conceptual way.

For example, in my immunology classes we studied immunity and the different types of vaccines. All of a sudden, it totally made sense in vet med why some vaccines need a booster, and why MLV was better in certain circumstances than a killed vaccine. Totally awesome.

And PS--celebrate your rejection. Buy a tiara from the dollar store, staple a sign that says "rejected" and have a party with some friends. Listen to Miley Cyrus "the climb" and get motivated for next year. And make sure you meet with Yasmin to get feedback on why you were rejected. If you are strong and determined, you will reach your goals, XOXO!

For those of you who attended the interview workshop, I really hope you enjoyed it! Davis is really awesome and I meant every word in my silly speech today. 😀 Also, I hope you all enjoyed our fun video. My wonderful classmates will be uploading it onto youtube soon, with links to follow!

Also, always feel free to PM me if you need anything. Good luck on your interviews!

I wish I could have attended the entire workshop, but I was there for about an hour of it and it was great seeing you guys!! I hope you liked the slide show and videos, I know my classmates really liked making them. We're all REALLY excited to see you guys around campus!

I remember interviewing last year and being terrified of the interview process, since I know that I don't interview well, but getting sleep, eating a good breakfast and being YOURSELF are 3 of the best things you can do for yourself (as obvious as that sounds). The interviewers only ask you questions to have a chance to get to know you in that short period of time and the more you can be yourself and just show them the amazing things about you (don't roll your eyes! haha) the better off you'll be. Also, these next 2 weeks all the first years have lab almost every day in addition to midterms and a final, so if we look unhappy or crazed, it's not you guys and it's not typical for us, just hectic schedules before finals. We're not as scary as well look, so come say hi!! 🙂

We all know what you guys are going through and are here to be supportive and encouraging!! 😀
Kick butt in those interviews!!

😱 Miley Cyrus?! Great advice except for that, ShelterURIgirl.

No more interview invites? Really?! Immediately after reading this I broke down and cried. I went to the work shop today, really excited and hopeful for an interview invite next week. Wow. There just are no words right now.

But, I am genuinely happy for those who did get invites and can't imagine the joy you feel. I hope you all get in!!!

Everyone should check out the video :] It is so cute! Davis looks awesome. I also looked up some of the related videos and the series by "Bone Box" is very funny! I am excited for all the people with interviews this year and I wish you good luck!

The interview workshop was awesome. I'm so glad I went. The panel was so amazing, it's quite intimidating to listen to all of your unique experiences! It looks like I might not be applying again until 2012 (c/o 2016), but I'm super excited to clench an interview next time! BTW, if you want to pick me out, I was wearing a purple top sitting next to the girl with the puppy on her lap. Wish I could have stuck around to introduce myself to fellow SDNers, but I had to run to an appointment :0).

I hope interviews went well for all of you interviewees today!🙂

ahhhh lame I guess I didn't make it. Well good luck to all preparing for interviews.

I don't know what to do now. If I were to apply again, my application would be weaker as I already graduated and haven't taken any new classes, and have been working the same job full time to support myself. So I'd have to apply the round after. I can't afford 2-3 years of working near minimum wage, applying and getting rejected again. I think I might have to move on to plan B.

Workshop was great, video was hilarious, was awesome to meet some 2013ers especially my awesome interview host shelterURIgirl!

Not quite so awesome was wrecking my bike on the way home and ending up in the ER. At least the morphine feels good...

(I'm fine, some stitches and some pain meds)

Yikes! That is bad news bears. I'm sorry you crashed and burned on your bike. Karma will make it up by having Davis accept you, just you wait.

Oh no!! I'm glad you're okay though.

On a side note, I have heard about your pink hair and was really excited to see you at the interview workshop - it's always nice to see SDNers (and your hair made it easier to pick you out) 🙂

:luck::luck: GOOD LUCK to EVERYONE these next few weeks! :luck::luck:

ouch nyanko...what a way to cap off the day x_x

i think i might stay at best western university lodge. i know at least one person suggested econolodge. any other suggestions?

my bigger question is...is there a bus that takes you directly to the vet school campus? i will have no car and i mapped it and although it's walkable, i rather not as i will be lugging my suitcase around and would like to avoid coming in sweaty =)

jesiah, I decided to go with that best western too, it sounds like it is pretty close. Will be making the drive up from the LA area next Sunday for the interview Monday afternoon and driving back down Monday night.
