I've never been so eager to get an email EVER! I'll make sure to let you guys know ASAP when I get the verdict. How can I study for finals when I can't focus on anything other than Davis Davis Davis Davis Davis Davis? Driving me nuts!

Startingovervet, are you talking about commuting daily while going to vet school? Or just commuting for the weekends?

I don't think it would work if it was an everyday thing. Vet school is hard and if you have to rely on taking the train on a schedule you will isolate yourself from study groups and review sessions, etc.

Not for me. The commute would be for my wife who would be applying into a phD program at Berkeley. She would prefer public transport over driving for any longer commute so she could use the time to do some of the inordinately high amount of reading necessary.

But thanks for your concern!

So I clicked the link one of the EVIL 2013ers put up on the other page, and it now says that the form will not be available until next Wednesday (3/24). However, I believe this gives all of us still waiting an idea of when we should have heard back from them by, although if the rest of us have to wait 'til wednesday it will be this :bang:

OK fine then it will just be one of these+pissed+. Although then we couldn't check email... ok scratch that as another bad idea.

Hopefully we need the brain cells for next year nyanko and I am sure you will be showing your classmates a thing or two. And good luck on your final cooniexp!

Ah, I have an amazing Ph.D. fellowship opportunity at Iowa State, working with somebody who is a pretty big deal in my area of genetics. I was extremely impressed with the campus and the program and the fellowship and the faculty members when they flew me there to visit/interview.

There are a lot of different aspects that come into play. It's complicated because my plans include getting both a DVM and Ph.D. I could do that here, most likely - I know they are accommodating to those of us who want to. But the fellowship...well, it's a tough thing to just turn down financially, you know? And the awesomeness of the program and research I'd be doing at ISU really can't be matched. 😳

I never really considered that I would be faced with any kind of choice like this. I've spent the last four years trying to convince people to give ME a shot, so it's new territory for me, you know?

...I know, boo hoo right? 🙄

First, congrats on getting the fellowship! There's no need to go into how difficult it is to get a PhD fellowship. That is truly amazing. What's your area of genetics? I'm just curious because I'm studying for my genetics final as we speak (at least pretending..under the circumstances).

I've heard that Iowa State is an awesome school. I think it's great that you have a choice. The tables have turned for the better fo sho. I hope you make the best decision (which only you can make)!!!

...... hope that we can be classmates next year:xf:😛

Broadly, I'm interested in companion animal breeding and genetic health. You know, effects of loss of genetic diversity on animal health at the organismal and population level.

ISU has one of the best programs for statistical and quantitative genetics, and the fellowship is for integration of bioinformatics, statistics and molecular genetics and genomics to solve problems in animal breeding. When I first read the description before I applied it was pretty much like someone read my personal statement and based the fellowship exactly on that. I talked to a professor there who apparently knows my current PI at UCDavis, and kinda was putting off the program application but that professor and the fellowship director actually emailed me in January encouraging me to finish the application. Then I got an offer to come out and visit before I even finished with submitting all of the materials. So it's a great fit, and financially it's a 3 year fellowship with a very good stipend and a good amount of prestige.

I really love it here, though, and I already have a lot of good research going on here that I could continue to work on, or I could begin something new, and of course I love the people (students and faculty) and facilities and everything. I've lived a lot of places and it feels right to me here. buuut yeah, I'll quit with my kvetching now.

Just so you all know, I'm camping this thread waiting for all of you to hear too. 😳

nyanko - that's awesome👍. population genetics is actually very interesting, if you ask me. how exciting that you found such a great fit at iowa state. looks like u have some hard-core decision making to do. best wishes.. truly!

I got in too! Got the email at 1 PM for those wondering and the email doesnt tell you anything, it just says to download the attachment which makes your heart rate shoot up. Good luck to everyone, I hope they get all the notices out by tomorrow

i got my email at 4 pm and was pooing bricks when i opened the attachment
 
For those of you quantitatively oriented (based on my probably inaccurate research):

% of people receiving interviews at UCDavis who have posted on SDN:
11% (24/220)

% of SDNers getting acceptances (thru 5:15 PST):
21% (5/24)

% of SDNers who have been rejected:
21% (5/24)

% of SDNers still checking e-mail
58% (14/24)
 
What do you suggest we extrapolate from these statistics? I'm not terrible at math, but I don't know what to think because I'm such a nervous/distracted mess :scared:
 
Okay, so I know that I am new around here, but I have secretly been watching you all for the last couple of months. =)

Congrats to those that have received their emails!!!! I am patiently (or not so much) waiting to get mine too and I just felt that we can all share in the anxiety together!
