UC Davis CO 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'll take it!!!! Oops, wait a minute, I was rejected...is it possible that they may go back and interview those who were initially rejected if everybody gets upset over the "two invites a day policy"?? 🙄. I don't mind..half of an invite a day is fine with me if I get a chance to go to UCDavis. 😀

The official response I got from Admissions today was that the "majority" of invites have gone out, but there are still a few decisions to make as information is forwarded from the adcom. Maybe I'm being pessimistic, but I got the distinct impression that she was basically telling me if I haven't gotten an invite yet, I shouldn't hold my breath. 🙁

I had taken the "two invites a day" thing to mean that all or most of the 220ish invites were going out at that rate, which would be crazy. But from what I got today, I think it's more likely *most* (80%? 90%? who friggin' knows) of the 220 went out last week, and they are just still sending out a few random ones that maybe they were still debating on. So the two a day would just be those stragglers, and if we haven't gotten an invite yet, we probably won't. Ugh. 'Course, we know at least a few people are already declining interviews, so that should mean a few more invites.

And I have no idea how Davis handles waitlist - how many they place there, how many they end up pulling off and interviewing later... And as far as I know, no IS applicants have gotten official rejections yet, right? The rejections a few weeks back were all OOS? So maybe there is still hope, but I feel like it's pretty dim for me now.

At least I have Kansas, but I so want Davis. :xf:

That's what I've gotten out of it, but good to know it's confirmed. There have been IS rejections (or at least I know of one). Last week (Thursday) when I was at my Glasgow interview, one girl (IS, parents live in Vacaville, she goes to Chico, LA/Food Animal interest) had already gotten a rejection.

Congrats on Kansas! 🙂

Believe it or not, the entire vet school doesn't revolve around applicants and the application process. Expecting the interview scheduling to happen in just one day is ridiculous. We have some of the nicest, most organized people in our administration. And just to clarify, there is only 1-2 people scheduling the interviews. Mostly it is Donna, because whenever I go into the office, she's on the phone and everyone else is busy helping students like me who drop in and need assistance.

Sorry to pop in here just to vent, but these wonderful people in our admin are AWESOME and they are doing an amazing job. So I kinda take offense that you are dissing my school, just FYI.

I have been trying on and off to get through for almost a week now. I am too busy to spend a full hour trying to get through.

The thing is, I just don't get the math. 220 appointments shouldn't be that hard to schedule. 1 or 2 minutes each and they should be done in a day. I grow less and less inclined to want to attend UC Davis. They just seem to be a disorganized mess.

I guess if I give up I've increased the odds for the rest of you with interviews, so congrats I guess.

It wouldn't, and that certainly wasn't want I meant express if you took it that way. My point was, it would be pretty hard for most humans to simultaneously pursue grad school and vet school, and it might be reasonable for an adcom to want applicants to commit to one or the other before they would offer you a spot. But as your experience shows, maybe that's not a consideration for them.

I do think that admissions committees understand and support the idea of having a "backup plan." In other words, you can't really commit to one or the other until you get accepted to one or the other, and neither is ever a done deal.

Aw, fail. It's too bad they didn't send out all the rejections at once, but c'est la vie...

Good luck on your interviews guys!:luck: Say hello to Davis for me.

Yeah, that's 100% not true as I read it.

Currently* I am sitting here in the lab where I am finishing up my MS at UC Davis and to where I applied to a Ph.D. in Genetics at UC Davis, preparing for my interview with the UC Davis vet school in 2 weeks.

So, no. I'd say that I was not automatically disqualified.

I don't know why attending or wanting to attend graduate school, presumably in the biological, biomedical, animal or veterinary sciences, would preclude anyone from being 100% committed to vet med.

*Yes, at 8:30 pm that is where I am.
Thanks Nyanko - It sounded pretty fishy to me....but it's so easy to get freaked out by anything during this waiting process! Congrats on the interview!!

And yah - I said on my app. that I'm interested in Avian / Poultry med & also applied to the Avian Science grad program......I would think that would show my dedication to the field.
I can't wait to get this week over - put me out of my misery Davis - and by that I mean please please please send me an invite!!!

Called a few minutes ago, and she said they're still sending out interview invitations through the end of this week. I guess if we don't hear back by the end of this week then it is a definite no? I wish she could have told me if my application made it into the top 20% and went to the admissions committee and not the academic whatever committee. That would have given me my answer right there. 😡

Just walked out of Valley Hall and saw some vet students preparing something for what looked like a video. Perhaps an Interview Workshop bit? Anyway, got me excited for all of you guys who got invited to an interview.

Congrats to those who are interviewing! I'll probably be at the workshop, even without the interview. 🙂

When's the workshop? Maybe if I showed up and then saw how interested I am in their school, I would be pulled off the rejection list and invited for an interview!!!😀 (just teasing of course, well maybe not)

Also, that rumor re: grad school vs. vet school is completely false.

I'm pursuing both degrees, concurrently, and I am not in the VSTP. I applied for both vet and grad, (but not vstp) at the same time, did not get into vet school (gpa issues) and so I started grad school instead. Then I put grad school on hold when I started vet school this year. There are a handful of students in each class who are also dual degree students through private funding, not VSTP.

It's actually super easy to do both degrees. I don't spend a lot of time in the lab during the year but during the summer I can be in the lab all day. There is a bit more paperwork on the administrative end since I have to switch my status a lot (grad student vs. vet student) but the admin here has been nothing but supportive.

But something to keep in mind, I think a lot of people apply for grad school and aren't serious about it. They try to use their interest in research as a leverage to get into vet school. So if you did apply to grad school, be prepared to back up your interests in your interview. I know several people who were "grilled" on this topic.

And OMG, yeah that was us!! Get excited, the interview workshop video we are putting together is going to be amazing!! I hope you get an interview invite...

lyndaelyzoo, I will join you. There is power in numbers! 😛

👍

I literally hope that they do grill me about my research. I will be able to discuss that much more intelligently and coherently than anything that I was asked about last time.

edit: shelterURIgirl, I might have a lot of questions about the logistics of what you're doing. A couple of professors here have talked about funding me for a Ph.D. and if I can shuffle things around a little and not have to totally abandon research at the level I'm accustomed to for 4 years if I get into vet school I will love my life a hundred times more.

Could someone please lie to me and post something brilliant like 'Davis forgot to send out half of their invites - and they're all going out next week' or something.....please? I don't want tomorrow to come....I don't want to know that I didn't get an interview.
🙁
Feeling overwhelmed and bummed

Don't worry, it'll be alright. 🙂

Haha, wish I was going for UC Davis!

twelve - everything's fine, did you see the post above the "f my life"? i had to make a fake sdn post for the interview workshop video, so i wasn't actually freaking out 😎

and, we wish you were applying here too!! how are your apps doing? i guess i should just go cruise the interview thread and see if you're in there, but i'm in the middle of another 14 hour day on campus and i'm trying to conserve energy.

Maybe you are right but I have consistently been disappointed with the Davis admissions office in comparison to the other schools I have applied/interviewed with.

I know we've addressed this several times this year but there is a HUGE difference between the experience everyone has applying to Davis and actually attending vet school here. Just sayin'... don't knock what you don't know. Every day I'm impressed by the quality of my experience here.

Oh, and, I was the mean girl holding the laptop making everyone walk through the bushes so as to not disturb our filming this morning. Sorry! LOL. One more lecture and then into the media lab to put the finishing touches on the video! 2:20 pm on Saturday can NOT come soon enough!

That is a good point, and to be fair, I posted that message after 7 days of frustration getting busy signals. Sometimes we all just need to vent a little.

I liked the interview workshop video from 2007, and I love the idea of attending a class with a current student! Hopefully there is more to love upcoming.

nyanko, I think I have been assigned as your "go to" person during the interview process. I was just about to send you an email...so yeah we should totally meet and discuss the whole dual degree thing. 🙂

Hah! You guys are funny. My day was considerably brightened by seeing your little skit as I said goodbye to an Immunology Midterm. Gracias!

Don't worry Sngstop, you're not alone on the no-interview-bummer-dude front. I'm surprisingly okay with not getting in this year and getting some more experience and going for a Master's Degree before applying again. I wouldn't mind the huge surprise of an interview invite at the last minute either!!! Hear that, Davis???😳

I just got a call from the admissions office wondering why I hadn't responded to schedule an interview. Apparently they sent me an email invitation before that was not received by my Spam box or otherwise. Hopefully some of the rest of you will also hear good news about teh internetz eating your invites!

Wow! That must have been the best Thursday afternoon surprise ever. I wish my e-mail box nom, nom, nommed my invitation....

I told you guys this is what happened to me and I would be in the same boat if my professor hadn't called and asked about it Friday! I'm glad they are calling people and I hope more SDNers get calls. 🙂

shelterURIgirl: sending PM! 😀

Lucky! What a nice surprise, congrats! I'm constantly checking my spam box also, but nothing at ALL is in there. So far, only the vet schools have that e-mail address, so seeing spam mail would actually be shocking. Glad they are calling people! I still have no hope since I think Kathleen (who picked up the phone this morning when I called) would have said something this morning if I had already gotten an e-mail.

SngStop, I'm in the same boat as you. And the same boat I was in last year as well. You're not left out.

Aww, that's really nice of them to call and check on people. 🙂 I get the feeling that some of the schools would just consider you SOL if that happened.

When I called to schedule, the woman (whose name I've forgotten) on the other end was so welcoming and chatty I could hardly get a word in edgewise at times.

GeeQued, awesome! I thought I had seen the name before. I'm running off to dinner now but will email you tonight or tomorrow.:highfive:

Wow, I'm starting to use so many SDN emoticons that it looks like a 12 year old girl has hijacked my account.

Congrats variegata!!

Yay variegata that must have been so exciting!
So for the rest of us who weren't lucky enough to get a phone call, I just called the office and spoke to Donna (I believe) and she said that they are sending them out both this week and next week. At this point I do not know what to believe, especially since the workshop is this weekend, but it is a glimmer of hope for the many of us who have yet to hear boo from them.:xf: that we all hear god things!

to add to the fun -

Just talked to Donna in the office and she said that, yes, letters will continue to go out during next week. (to which I replied - oh yay - two weeks of ulcers!) However, they were able to contact everyone today who didn't reply to their e-mails from Friday, Feb 12th.

She also said that rejection letters have begun to be sent out today, and will continue through the next couple days (weeks?) so be prepared for those suckers 👎 as well.

This rollercoaster is beyond loopy!!!!

You guys have made me smile for the first time in like a week. I am glad I am not going through this alone. My nerves have gotten so bad stressing over school and apps that over the last year I developed a spastic stomach (sounds so stupid to write), which I'm guessing is as painful as childbirth. I went to the ER last monday after 6 hours of childbirth overnight, and even 150 mg of fentanyl IV didn't kick it. I had a scope on Tuesday and the doc couldn't find anything, and sent me home with an Rx for an anti-anxiety med. I think I should call Davis and tell them how much pain they are directly responsible for, and they for sure will give me a pitty acceptance!

That's horrible! But I totally feel your pain.....every time I come on here and see that more invites are going out, I get so anxious that I literally almost vomit (never had that happen to me before). Not to mention, this process is killing my grades this quarter - it's so hard to focus while stressing this hard! 😱

Hey everyone! I just wanted to pop my head into this thread and say don't lose hope all you Davis hopefuls!! The same thing that happened to variegata....happened to me 😀. Admissions left me a message on my cell telling me I have yet to respond to an interview email that they sent me, but of course its too late to rectify that. Not sure whether to take the interview or not...I've never lived outside the Northeast, so it would be a drastic change in scenery, but Davis has great aquatics facilities (which is my main interest right now)...so I'm torn. Good luck everyone!!

Please remain seated with your seatbelt fastened and keep all arms, hands, and legs inside the coaster until it has come to a full and complete stop. 😛

Don't think my roller coaster has any brakes!!!!😱

BTW, you must post this video for those of us who are rejected so that we can live vicariously through those chosen few who were invited!!!😀

I know exactely how we are all feeling! I finally broke down and literally bawled my eyes out last night. I know that each and everyone one of us have put our entire lives towards this moment - it's heartbreaking to see it temporarily derailed...

BUT there's still a glimmer of hope and so we'll cross our fingers until they send us an e-mail!

To help with my negative thinking, i've compiled a list of pros to not starting vet school this year: get to show my horse for another summer, have an opportunity to not poke people's eyes out when they ask "how do you feel about not getting in?, get in better shape, learn to play WoW with my husband, pet my geriatric dog A LOT, fall into a pit of bottomless despair, learn to knit, get in touch my my tear ducts, have time to find a rich benefactor...

lol....nothing is as good as that white coat ceremony, though! *starts humming "I will survive"*

oh boy. the stress is getting to me. my greatest apologies.😱

twelve - everything's fine, did you see the post above the "f my life"? i had to make a fake sdn post for the interview workshop video, so i wasn't actually freaking out 😎

I know, I was just being silly. Besides, that the point, right? You go bitch on SDN and immediately everyone rushes in to reassure you. :d

and, we wish you were applying here too!! how are your apps doing? i guess i should just go cruise the interview thread and see if you're in there, but i'm in the middle of another 14 hour day on campus and i'm trying to conserve energy.

UCDavis would giggle while running my app through the shredder, lol. I have an interview at OKState a week from today, and that's the only place I applied. 🙂

Davis sounds like a great place, but anywhere that takes 10 OOSers is probably not the place for me.

Good luck, guys!

I wouldn't be TOO concerned. I have a lot of faith and trust in our Dean, as well as the rest of the academic personnel that run this program. Budget cuts and steep rises in tuition are happening everywhere, not just California, and UCD has a huge pool of private donors to call upon for support.

Nobody likes the budget cuts, but all in all the UCD SVM is going to do whatever it takes to maintain its position as one of the top schools in this country. Even if it means going private. 😱

I've been wondering about this. Is anyone else taking budget cuts into consideration? Should we be concerned?

to the davis vet students, what's the best thing you like about the school? i realized i know very little about the school, so i started reading up on it.

and will the hosts be giving tours? if so, i hope mine gives it after my interview...i don't think i'll be able to listen to anything he/she says before then.

lastly, are there any places to eat close by the interview place? i think i will be arriving a few hours early.

and thanks everyone for the help so far, esp. w/ transportation. regardless of what happens, i plan to have a good time in sf and berkley afterwards.

Awww Squibby! Don't worry, you are not even close to being alone! I think there are more of us anxiously checking our email for invites than people who have actually gotten them. And if it makes you feel any better, last time I applied to Davis, I was so stressed out that I was hospitalized for 10 days for stomach pain. Apparently I have Crohns disease... Thanks application process for pointing that out to me! :horns:

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Go to Crepeville, jesiah! Yummy deliciousness that is crepes...yummmmmm. (You know where I'll be that morning, haha!). There's also an Applebee's, a bunch of fast food chains, Dos Coyotes (delicious TexMex food), lots of Sushi places, etc. Lots of choices, depending on what you want.

jesiah, If you like all you can eat sushi, Jusco and Davis Sushi Buffet are always delicious. My mouth is watering just thinking about it....

thanks for the suggestions. i think i might pass on the ayce as i would not like to go in stuffed and sickly to the interview =p i was thinkni more on campus tho like short walking distance from the vet school? i will be in a suit and would prefer not to be walkin around too much (i have no car)

You can go to our on campus cafe, Scrubs. It's literally right next door to the building you'll be in for your interview. They have a grill (burgers/quesadillas/fries, etc.), a fresh sandwhich/salad area, and a mexican area with burritos/tacos/taco salads. They also serve Starbucks coffee and pastries. The food's not the best you'll ever eat, but it's pretty decent 🙂

There's always Scrubs, they have coffe and bagels/donuts/pastries available and it's right in the Vet med complex. I think the genome building across the parking lot also has a little cafe, with fruit drinks and snack food. You can probably walk to the student union - maybe a 20 minute walk (a student can probably tell you actual walking time), and they have good stuff there.

I didn't realize the interview workshop required formal suit attire? I thought it was a chill sort of thing - jeans and a nice Tshirt. I don't want to wear my suit, ugg! Makes me feel so stuffy.

The only eatery within walking distance of the vet school is Scrubs cafe which has decent food (burgers, salads, burritos, sandwiches, etc) but somewhat pricey and not very interesting... at least not after eating there as much as I have. It is just the next building over from Valley hall (where the interviews are held).

Hosts can give tours but not everyone is familiar enough with the VMTH to give tours of that (like me...). We can however, give you a very thorough tour of the classrooms and labs. That is up to your host... but feel free to ask. 🙂 Come to think of it, I would have liked to see Gourley during my tour when I was interviewing here. There are several buildings in the vet school complex... 2 buildings for lecture halls, 1 for gross anatomy lab, 1 for microanatomy, the VMTH, and Gourley. Gourley is where you do your surgeries, radiology labs, etc so it has nifty equipment in nice modern facilities.

The best thing about the vet school? Definitely the anatomy department. I'm sure other vet schools have awesome profs but I love Dr. Kasper, Ron and Ken! Where else do you get a haunted anatomy lab for Halloween and Christmas presents after a final?

I didn't realize the interview workshop required formal suit attire? I thought it was a chill sort of thing - jeans and a nice Tshirt. I don't want to wear my suit, ugg! Makes me feel so stuffy.

I thought it was business casual as in "Don't wear jeans but a suit isn't necessary"?

Can someone who knows correct me if im wrong?

It doesn't. I don't think jesiah is coming to the workshop and is talking about day of interview.

If you're in a suit and don't want to walk far but don't want to eat at Scrubs, there's a bus that stops in the Health Sciences district by the genome center (relatively close to Valley, where the interviews will be held) and goes to the Silo Union. It's free since it's an on campus route, and the Silo has a lot of options (some chains, a crepe place, a sandwich place, coffee place, etc..).

You could also walk to the Silo if it's a nice day and your shoes aren't too uncomfortable - if you are a fast walker and take shortcuts it's like a 10 min walk.

scrubs will be fine, thanks. i just need somewhere to sit down and get a light bite while i relax while waiting for the interview.

yup, not the workshop. my interview is next friday! after party at crepeville to follow. holla.

I think we should start a group named "Coalition of United Digestive-Disordered Pre-vet Students" for short "CUD Pre-vets"

Just talked to Donna in the office and she said that, yes, letters will continue to go out during next week.

I guess that's good news, but wish we had an idea how many/what percentage of letters are still to go out. Like from my info yesterday, I got the impression the vast majority have already gone out, and there are just a small number of stragglers left - in which case all of us who haven't heard probably should give up hope. But if they really have a bunch of people from their first list who they just haven't sent out because they don't want to overwhelm their staff, than we probably still have reason to hope.

Dang it, with the workshop on Saturday just wish I knew one way or the other. I can't afford to go running up there if I'm already rejected, but on the other hand if I pass on the workshop and get an invite next week, I'll be so pissed at missing that opportunity to give myself a bit of an edge.

Top Bottom
