This whole waiting thing sucks. I know going into this that I don't have a good chance of getting an interview, but it would still be nice to know NOW. Daydreaming about fantasy e-mails in class is starting to drive me nuts.
 
Last year it seemed that they sent out a few rejections before invites went out and then they kept the rest on "hold" until after invites and acceptances went out already disseminated.

I am not sure what the point of such a system is...I think it's unfair to keep people in limbo for so long.

oh duh Gellabella, those early rejections were only for the people that Davis especially hated (read: too good for them) 😛

I called today with a random question after doing my Ohio State file review. The lady mentioned that they are doing invites on a rolling basis. I said "Oh, so they won't all be sent out by the end of next week?" and she said "no" that it would be over the next couple of weeks. What torture, my god!

I don't know about doing research during school, but there is definitely a lot of time during the summer. The STAR program gives you $5000 to work on research during the summer... if your project gets selected. Many professors seem keen on getting vet students on their research projects.
 
got the interview invite today around noon. i called today several times, and it was a busy line. finally after a few tries today, I was able to schedule an appointment. i was hoping for mon the 22nd, so i could go to the workshop, but it's all filled. and the next day i got a midterm, so i decided not to go to the interview workshop, and schedule the interview on friday at 130 pm. not sure how many people are interviewing per day. i'm assuming the later you get an invite, the less flexibility youll have as just on reading sdn alone, the letters started going out yesterday or the day before?

also, i live near LA, and i was debating whether to drive or fly. i mapped it out, and the sacramento airport is about 22 miles from davis campus. for those who go there, what do you recommend? are there shuttles to and from the school, or is it taxi and if so, anyone know the cost? and any hotels near davis you recommend? i may drive because i have a few friends who live in sf and that would save some money, but the drive does take time...

I have attached a list I made last year in preparation for my interview of all of the types of questions commonly asked during interviews at Davis as well as several other schools. Those in bold were questions I personally was asked during my interview.
I would also be aware of any current events in vet medicine in the U.S., and California specifically. For example, Prop 2 and horse slaughter/unwanted horses.

There should be a couple of shuttles from the airport to Davis, I don't know their rates though. If you drive, parking at the vet school is free on weekends unless they are ri-***** and make this an event in which they can charge event parking. I'm am partial to the lovely Econolodge, but there are a couple hotels that are in the downtown Davis area which are a little nicer.
 
I'm trying to decide whether to take an early interview and get it over with or take more time to prepare/procrastinate. Do you guys know if davis accepts people all at once after all interviews are conducted or on a rolling basis like ohio and penn do?

They don't charge event parking for symposia and other events at the vet school, only stadium events it seems. Parking should be free, and on the weekdays they reserve free parking areas for interviewees.

In terms of commutes between the airport, hotel and school, I'd be willing to help out some people. If anyone is interested, send me a PM and we can sort out schedules.
 
I just read the interview workshop welcome email (for the hundreth time) and I am so excited about coming up to Davis and meeting everyone 😀.

That letter was one of the most flattering things ive ever recieved (even if 219 other people are getting the same letter)... to the class of 2013, you are awesome for putting this on, putting us up and writing such a great letter (and of course for encouraging and supporting us on SDN).

I already love you guys 😍.

chii chan - I'm in the Bay Area and received mine today. I really think it's random, no matter how hard we try and look for a pattern.

Could anyone tell me why the first interview dates fill up faster? Is it 'better' to interview first? I'm pretty new to the interview scene, but I could probably list pros and cons to interviewing early and late. And just wanted to add that Kathleen (I think she was the lady who answered the phone) is so kind! She congratulated me and was very accommodating in scheduling my interview. 👍

I'm so excited for the interview workshop, I can't wait to meet a bunch of amazing students, professors, staff, and hopefully my future classmates! 😍

I also live in LA area and am flying up to sacramento and somehow finding my way to Davis. Flying out of Burbank always seems fairly low-hassle.

Thank you calioutlaw1a for the interview questions. I'm so nervous for this interview because it's my first one ever.

I'll be up there for the interview workshop and orientation so I'm really excited to meet some of you!

I also wondered whether interviewing earlier was a good/bad idea. I'm interviewing on the 22nd. Do they make their decisions right after the interview or do they wait until all interviews are done. If the latter, I'm worried they'll forget the early people and remember later people more?

Also, is a formal pencil skirt and a nice blouse formal enough or do I need a whole suit, with jacket and all?

So many questions!

If I had to guess, I'd say it's because people who are making the trip out here from farther away than what's considered a day trip want to be able to only make one trip to go to the interview orientation and interview.

I don't think that it matters when you have your interview. I liked having a middle date because that meant that people on SDN who had had theirs would report back, but I didn't have to wait too long after the orientation workshop either. The only downside I can think of is that they don't tell you if you got in or not until after all of the interviews are done, so you end up waiting longer to hear after your interview date.

I would recommend a suit for sure. They want to see that you are professional and that you can be taken seriously. That said, I'd dress it up with something fun 🙂 like a classy but interesting piece of jewelry or a colored shirt. I think that helps you stand out because everyone is just wearing suits and plain shirts for the most part.

The class of 2013 is getting really excited to meet you guys!!

I interviewed on the 2nd day last time and look where it got me. :laugh:

I don't think it matters much when you interview as far as your chances of getting in go..

Hmm, that doesn't seem right. If the interview workshop is 2/20, seems only fair to have ALL interview invites sent out before that so people know whether they should/could try to make the workshop. I suppose putting an old one online is their way of getting around that, and most people won't be able to work their schedules to get there anyway with a week or less notice, but still, if they've got the interview list finalized, why not just get it all out in a couple days. Dragging it out for several more weeks is ridiculous.

I doubt very much that it will actually take them 'several weeks' to get all the invites out. There's no way that they'd notify people after the workshop, unless it was some weird extenuating circumstance. They always say stuff like that, who knows why. My money is that all the invites will be out by next Weds.

The most frustrating part of applying to Davis is that they act totally freaking disorganized and confused and secretive during the whole app process. Don't stress about it, just hang in there, it's worth it, because, trust me, this school is AMAZING.

Apparently they tried to send me the email at 9:01 am, but for whatever reason it never got to me. I was kind of down here in my lab and my PI actually called over to the office to ask about me since she heard that the VSTP decisions were out (didn't get one for that - but I guess they are extremely underfunded this year), and they told her that they sent out an email today. I checked spam and nothing...but then they forwarded it to me again this afternoon.

Also, I called before all of this and talked to someone in the office, and actually directly asked about the rolling thing and the orientation, and how it was basically relayed to me was that the first 220 or whatever will go out by the end of next week, but they may send some afterwards if spots are open or whatever.

Exhausting, but I'm pretty relieved. Good luck squibby and everyone else still waiting.. 😍

Last year 15 sdn'ers were interviewed at Davis, and 12 were accepted!

I like those odds! One of the first things I did when I got my invite was divide 133/220 and figure out what my chances are... :xf:

I did the number obsessing my first time. Then I got rejected post-interview. So I'm not thinking about that this time. :meanie:

If anyone has any questions or needs airport rides or anything that your student host can't answer or provide, I will offer up my help to potential future classmates. Again, nothing about the DVM curriculum really, but questions about Davis or the school in general or the VMTH I'd be glad to help with!
 
Are you going to still have your pink hair at the workshop nyanko? I've heard so much about this infamous pink hair here on SDN that I'm going to be very sad if I'm in the same room as you and I don't get to see it. 🙂

Haha, I'm not sure...

I have to fly to Iowa the next day and interview with 7 (!) professors on Monday for a Ph.D. fellowship. My PI told me that I should keep my hair this color for those interviews but I think she is trying to sabotage me! 😉

The rest of you, I know it's a really tough wait but hang in there. Unfortunately, there really is no rhyme or reason to the order in which they send out invites... and if Davis seems a little disorganized and cryptic during the application process, trust me when I say the opposite is true once you're a student here. It is truly an amazing vet school.

If you can't come to the interview workshop, definitely watch the webcast. It will help you get an idea of Davis's interview "style". (For example, the interview panel usually lets you make a sort of closing statement at the end of the interview... so it might be helpful to think a little bit about what you might want to say/what you want your last impression to be.) Also, if you're not attending the info session, see if you can arrange to sit in on a class with your host and/or take an official tour of the VMTH etc on the day of your interview (other than meeting up with your student host, they don't really plan any info sessions/tours etc on the actual interview days... you're basically in and out of there in 20 min)

thanks calioutlaw and everyone else from your helpfulness. i decided to fly...got class the night before and not worth driving up and being tired. i am planning to go to sf/berk after my interview. is there a train nearby that will take me near?

i been looking at the interview feedback and saw some techincal knowledge questions...like cbc, rat poison. what are some strategies to prepare for that?
 
Amtrak in downtown Davis connects up with BART in the bay area.

As for the technical knowledge questions you asked about You can do 1 of 2 things. 1) you can do you your best to read up and learn about these things ahead of time or you can 2) be honest and say you don't know (which is what I would personally recommend). I definitely had to use the "I don't know card" in my interview regarding a technical question and I doubt it counted against me! (I was asked, "What are the clinical signs of Ehrlichia that would you look for before incising on a dog?" -- long story how that came up!)

You're looking at Amtrak to Berkeley then BART to get to SF.
Amtrak from Davis to Berkeley is $20, and BART to SF like $7. Amtrak won't take you near BART, don't know about a shuttle or anything, but it would be a less than $10 cab ride to get to the Telegraph area and BART. Hope that helps.

If you have to do that round-trip maybe renting a car would be cheaper (?) but wait, you have to be 25 to rent a car, huh? I don't know how old you are, sorry.

And BTW, depending on where you need to go on Bart, the price varies. I'm assuming Richmond means wayyyyy in Richmond (and FYI, Richmond is not the nicest area - I essentially live next door to parts of Richmond). From Del Norte station, its 8.10 round trip to downtown (as far as civic center), or 4.05 one way. You can use the Bart trip planner to see how much fare costs and approximate departure/arrival times for the day. During commute hours, time varies and trains will sometimes stop mid tunnel to avoid collisions (quite annoying to have to sit and wait a few minutes mid tunnel). If you need to take Muni, then its $2 no matter how far or close you need to go. Muni is accessed on a different floor/level as Bart, but within the same structure as Bart.

If you're going to SF, make sure you take the Milbrae train. If you take the Fremont train, then you have to make sure you make a transfer train, otherwise you're obviously going to go to Fremont and not SF. If you're travelling to Berkeley, you can take Amtrak all the way there, or use either Milbrae/Fremont train to get you there. Whichever is most convenient.

You will need cash! Bart takes credit cards with a minimum of $20 transactions. The majority of your change if you are subtracting to get the right amount, comes out of the machine in nickels (heavy, unnecessary, and annoying). Muni can break $1/$5 into dollar coins. They don't take bills - only the coins.

Yeah, the Amtrak Capitol Corridor connects with bart at the Richmond station at the very end of the line. You do not want to be stuck there for any appreciable amount of time if you are traveling alone.

The bart stops on the Pittsburg/Bay Point line are probably the closest to Davis if you have access to a car rather than taking Amtrak. It's cheap to park at the Walnut Creek stop and it's about 45 mins to an hour from Davis depending on traffic.

Yeah, did I miss something? They just started sending out invites last week, right? And from what people are saying on here, invites will continue to dribble out for at least the rest of this week and possibly several weeks? So my understanding is if we haven't gotten a flat-out rejection like some OOS people got weeks ago, than we are still very much in the running. I hope? :xf:
 
Just a quick note we're off school today, so I wouldn't expect any invites to be sent (I doubt that administration is working today with the state budget being what it is).
