Just finished interviewing, and was asked a Q that I told them I did not think was appropriate. Had to do with my race. Didn't play the race card during this admit cycle. I might next. I could've easily applied disadvantaged, although I did not. Davis apparently thought it was comical. Or at least one interviewer did.

I talked to someone after the interview, but I'm wondering if I should do something more?

Anyone with experience here?

I think you should probably tell us exactly what was said since we might interpret the encounter differently from you. I understand if you want to stay anonymous, but anyone at UCD who's familiar with the incident can likely already identify you since things like this hopefully don't happen too often.

Can you be more specific?

And can you tell us your little secret?

Close. But what about hispanic & an MCAT that would shame most mortals? It's no secret when you see me, but should I have to play that card < the interview?

The Joker card? No. You shouldn't have to play that card...

Do you realize that you haven't told us anything to go off of?

So did you not check hispanic on AMCAS - is that what you mean by not playing the race card?

Or you did check it and your interviewer didn't believe that that was your heritage (by looks or maybe knowledge of Spanish) and called you out on it. If that is the case - yes it is inappropriate - and if you told the school, they should have offered you another interviewer...

Should we label UCD as racist for noticing that you're Hispanic? Like you said it is obvious looking at you...

Wait I'm so confused...

This inequality doesn't make any sense:
but should I have to play that card < the interview?

Is this is some sort of Tuesday night f!cktardfest? 'Cause if it is, no one let me know. Yes, ******s, I'm hispanic. And no, I didn't check the "go to med school free" box. But I definitely will next cycle.

My question is whether anyone else went this route? Went anon first cycle, but got laughed at for it during the invite? I want to sue these f!ckers for thinking it's funny.

I could easily go md/phd free ride if i checked that box. will next cycle for sure.

So what did the interviewer think was funny?

Is being hispanic your little secret? That would be such a let-down.

I don't really understand why they would find it funny...or what their reason is for laughing at you...what does you being hispanic have to do with md/phd free ride

ok OP...first off, calm down.
second, don't take what people say on here personally...they tend to think every other post involving race/URM is trolling and react as such.

If you want some honest feedback/advice, you may just want to lay it all out on the table. You keep saying that "you will" identify race next cycle...you're assuming it won't work out this time?

re: your UCD interview...I'm not very clear on what exactly happened, but here's what i'd suggest. Report it, but don't expect too much. I had a similar issue at another school, not race/ethnicity related at all though...just something i thought was inappropriate on part of the interviewer. I reported it, the asst. dean reviewd my file/interviewer's remarks, stated "no red flags"....got waitlisted. Applied there again this year...no interview. Take that as you will.

I don't think schools like applicants speaking badly about their own.

Anyway, hope that helps.

I think everyone's on your case because you started giving a lot of sass for someone who was seeking advice, but gave no details with which we could help you.

By not explaining clearly, it took until post #6 for us to get a clue to the situation and it wasn't until post #8 that someone accurately guessed what had happened. It took a few more posts until we finally heard back from you that sure enough, you didn't check the URM box and that you felt insulted by the interviewer for it.

If you want advice, I think you should be a little more helpful and less reactionary.

That said, I agree that there isn't much more that you can do; you already brought it to the attention of administrators.

I don't have personal experience with this but it doesn't appear to be racism so much as the interviewer's inappropriate comments at how the med school admissions processes works. A lot of people joke about it and while joking about it in an interview is inconsiderate, it's not illegal.

Settle down Koko. No one was expecting much from you.

Will apply next cycle urm + disadvantaged. Looking forward to the scholarships.

koko_eats with the running commentary. Thanks koko.

This seems to be some sort of troll post for purposes of pointing out the advantages that URM's get in admissions.

I'd have been happy to at least offer some input/advice, but since the OP a.) still hasn't provided enough information to base any advice on and b.) is acting like a complete dingus to the very people trying to help him, I'm gonna pass. In the future, I'd suggest that you not assume the worst about people from the outset.

BTW, I'm laughing at you right now for being such a baby. Are you gonna sue me too?

The purpose of seeking out students who are URM is to find individuals who are willing to go back to those underrepresented communities and serve as physicians there. Many students from those communities have unique challenges and disadvantages that others don't have.

In my interview, I was also asked why I didn't apply disadvantaged. I told him that I did not have any weaknesses on my application that I felt was caused by my "disadvantaged status." I told him that my "disadvantaged" experiences have actually made me a stronger person, and that I would not want to be pitied in any way.

In response, the interviewer was very understanding and explained that when a student, who comes from a "disadvantaged" background, claws their way up to success, it's very different than when a student is given all the resources to success.

With that said, if you're a hispanic student with no cultural ties to your background and grew up with all the resources available, and happened to f-up on your MCATS, then.....

I still have no clue what was said that was so inappropriate and illegal...

Word. My interviewers responded similarly.

In order to prevent the public from observing the consequences of the "URM free-pass culture", this thread is closed.
Close it because dude has yet to provide any evidence about his situation other than a low MCAT and an ethnicity, which has the potential to incite all types of chaos.

Maybe he thought your reaction to the question was comical. If your attitude at interviews is anything like your attitude on this thread, I wouldn't be able to keep a straight face either.

I thought he was implying he had a high mcat. Either way, he's also provided solid evidence of being a tool...and when this shows at interviews he is going to struggle regardless of what boxes he checks.

Obvious trolling.

Because if it isn't, then there's no way this can be for real. There are future doctors who think, react and live this way??

This Is A Stupid Thread.

Huh. Knowing very little other than your posts, I think folks are learning towards Davis at this stage...

If I could sue people for laughing at things I didn't find funny, there'd be a whole lot of Dane Cook fans paying out right now....

I call troll.

Take a second look at some of the posts that you've made.

But don't trip climbing off your high horse.

hey notdeadyet, can you close this thread?
Only at the request of the OP. So far, I don't see anything violating TOS. If anyone disagrees, click the report post and it'll fire off a warning to the full mods who have more experience and may see something I don't.

Victor,
I think you are a idiot, with no disrespect, for several reasons.

1. You log onto a blog and ask us "******s" our opinion on a subject that you told us nothing about.

2. Thinking the race card is not a get into med school free ticket
3. if your MCAT shames us meer mortals, you should not have to wait to get into med school next cycle. with that MCAT score, you should have gotten in somewhere.

Hmm... I'm not going to say what you should or shouldn't do. I'm guessing they just thought it was strange because you didn't check the box and most people would have. Not checking the box when you are considered a URM opens you to questions about it.
My situation at Davis was different. The first question one of my interviewers asked me (I thought this was really inappropriate) was "Why are you estranged from your father?"
Why did he bring this up? Apparently, it was because in that secondary question (the who is the most influential person in your life), I said it was my mom, because she pretty much raised us with little help (financial or otherwise) from my dad.
Anyway, the interviewer continued down this track asking for specific details, and asked me why I was upset that my dad wouldn't give me financial info for college (it kept me from going to my dream school undergrad, which didn't have need blind admissions at the time and based on a scholarship I got, tehy would have had to pay for everything, based solely on my mom's income😀). He asked how my relationship with him is (better than before), etc.
I guess the point of this is that I've been told by many many many people that if you do/ write something on your app. that opens you to a certain line of questioning, you have to take the heat.

Good luck.

Correct me if I'm wrong...

Isn't the DISADVANTAGED box separate from the HISPANIC box? And there's no URM box...

No need to be rude.

I admit that filling out the AMCAS was tedious, and considering that I am neither disadvantaged nor a minority, I did not spend a lot of time thinking about this question. I had the impression (may have been wrong) from the OP's posts that he/she had checked neither the "hispanic" box nor the "go to med school free (as the OP put it)" box, hence my making a comment about them not saying they were URM. I'm assuming that anyone interested in what I wrote would be able to decipher what I was trying to say, which is that if it's on your application in any way, shape, or form, it's fair game.

i recently interviewed at Davis..........this week....i wonder if i met this guy. 😕. everyone there that day was very nice though......

Not really sure what went on here, but as a Davis student who has done many interviews of perspective students, I can say that if something inappropriate did occur, your best bet would be to talk to the admissions office about it. I think they would be responsive and would do what they can to remedy the situation, ie giving you a new interviewer or not using the feedback from that interview.

I do think what chemphd says is true--if you do tell a story or experience on your application or secondary that is personal, or that may deal with some issue that may be "controversial" in some way, it may likely be brought up at your interview. Unfortunately, the interviewer may bring it up in a way that is uncomfortable, whether it is intentional or not. I don't think this is unique to med school applications. It happens at residency interviews as well, and at other types of job interviews where your resume is scrutinized.

I look forward to you not getting accepted anywhere.
Yes, interviewers can see that you're a douche if you are one.

It's still totally unclear what happened to the OP. The only thing that I've gathered is that he's an @ss.

i recently interviewed at Davis..........this week....i wonder if i met this guy. 😕. everyone there that day was very nice though......

Hm... on Monday? We obviously didn't meet or else you wouldn't say everyone was very nice 🙂 j/k

were you the anthro guy who had the same interviewer as me?

I'm not even saying he wasn't nice😛 He gave me a hard time about that, but once that portion of the conversation was over, it was much more pleasant. We talked about books, and life, and "normal" interview stuff. I didn't go in there expecting to be grilled about that particular aspect of my answer (which the interviewer read between the lines). My student interviewer was awesome, and everyone else was super nice. I'd be really happy to go there- if I passed that interviewer's test😀

I am surprised at how mean spirited you are. Doctors are typically supposed to be compassionate and relatively open-minded people. Maybe THAT's what's wrong with your application this cycle. Don't be mean to other posters trying to help you.

I like the fact that you can read this thread and not respond, because you clearly are not interested in hearing what advice people here have to give. For future references, abstain from insulting the very people trying to help you. In conclusion, your extremely rude, uncalled for temper dictates you are not worthy enough of a person to be helped and the restraint which was used by others here, on this thread, is a true indicator of goodwill. You sir, seem to have none. 👎

Good day.
