Hey! Does anybody have an idea of whether it is easy to establish residency in CA? I really want to go for the cheapest option but I don't have an idea of how expensive it is to live in California and whether I can get in-state tuition after I decide to move there. So far I know UC davis costs $36832 per year for IS and $49077 per year for OOS, and Cornell costs about $45000 for IS per year. Thank you for any insights in advance!

Hi! Congrats on great options! I might be your classmate at UCD 🙂
UCD gives all students about 8-9k/year fellowship every year for all four years. That lowers the expense a lot, plus you will get residency, it's easy peasy in CA.
I am also currently considering at alternative (NCSU) based on cost of living however... California is VERY expensive. Take a peak at housing options available, and see if they fit your expectations. Gas and other things like repairs or any service also cost about ~twice what you'd expect. I lived in CA as a grad student, and it was doable I just never did anything extra like eating out or anything too costly. Depending on your lifestyle your costs in CA can vary a lot! The COL quoted at UCD website is beyond optimistic and I'd expect to spend much more than what is posted

I'm from CA and planning to go to UCD. Getting in-state tuition after the first year is relatively easy and they want you to do it as an OOS student. And like Feline said, they also offer grants to every student to help lower the cost. Housing is crazy expensive, but it all depends on what you're looking for... do you want a 1 bedroom apartment close to campus? Cuz you're gonna pay a lot more then renting a room in a house with 4 other roommates that's maybe 20 min away. Eating out is also very expensive... meal planning will be your new best friend.
