UCLA and Berkeley

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Right now, it's looking like Emory will be my top choice too (out of accepted schools). Now I'm just waiting on Berkeley, UCLA, and SDSU. I got into Columbia 2 days ago, and Arizona yesterday. Columbia sounds attractive, but it's so expensive! What other schools were you accepted to?

I got into UIC and Emory. I'm still waiting for UCLA, UCD, and SDSU. Hope you get into Berkeley!

I called the Epi department today to find out about decisions. I chickened out about asking about myself specifically, but she did say that they would sending out another round of decisions soon- early next week-ish.

Hope this helps/ relaxes some of you! 😳

Heard back from Berkeley (MPH in MCH) today with a rejection =(
I hope the rest of you get better news soon

It's my first choice for a variety of reasons.

1. I was born and raised in Cali, so it would be nice to stay in Cali and pay in-state tuition.
2. My bf is going to grad school at Stanford so I can be closer to him.
3. It's a top 8 school, so it can't be too bad.

What is your first choice?

I don't know what my first choice is anymore!! I'm pretty confused right now. 🙂 I'm hoping going to some visit days in March and emailing some faculty will help make my decision easier.
Hope we hear back soon. Good luck! :xf:

Can someone who is a current student at Berkeley, please provide some insight about the personal attention MPH students receive. I would imagine that students get a lot of individual attention since it's relatively small (compared to Emory and Hopkins, at least) and it's a top 10 school. However, I don't have a very good impression of Berkeley so far. Although I was accepted to Berkeley on Feb. 8, I didn't get any word of their March 8 Visit Day until this past Thursday (and they want an RSVP by today!). I just haven't sensed that Berkeley is personally invested in their applicants, and I'm curious if that lack of personal attention holds true for their students as well. Hopefully not!

has anyone gotten their letter in the mail from berkeley yet? because i'm all confused about this transcript business...like do we need to send it in to save our spot or what?

I know right? I sent my transcripts in the minute I got the email from Berkeley's SPH because they said that the graduate school had final decision; still waiting for the official letter.

I got rejected from UCLA last night at 11:59 pm. Ironic, huh? One minute before the hour of doom. I'm feeling sad since I was hoping to have another chance to stay in California. Now everything lies with Berkeley, but if I can't get into UCLA, how am I going to be able to get into Berkeley? :scared:

I was rejected from ucla around midnight as well. i didnt apply to cal, so looks like im def heading somewhere east (and moving out of CA for the first time)!

chin up knitphgurl!🙂

Each school's admissions committee is looking for something different. Adcoms will be looking for unique applicants/backgrounds/skill sets especially if you're looking to do research while you're at their school-- each school has different professors whose research interests vary. I've heard of many people who've been denied by UCLA and admitted to UCB.:luck:

I'm sorry UCLA didn't work out as you guys had hoped-the road ahead is definitely filled with adventure for you! What program at UCLA did you apply to? I have a nervous, awful feeling that prevents me from sleeping at night (or having nightmares!!).

Thanks, I hope you're right. 🙂 I guess at least now I don't have to worry about the exorbitant rent in Westwood. 😀

I applied to MPH in Epi. Yeah, I had a hard time sleeping last night because I was worrying about how I would move for grad school if I end up going to Emory.

Where on the east coast will you be going? I've never lived outside of CA either!

I have been accepted to BU, Emory, UIC, UTexas and still waiting to hear back from U Florida.

I'm planning on making a trip out to visit UIC, BU, and UT at the end of March, before I have to make my final decision in April.

for those who received the email stating that their application will be forwarded to EHS for UCLA; has anyone heard from the EHS department yet? I'm wondering how long it takes to hear an official decision...eeekkkk!

So strange...I had gotten the email about switching from CHS to EHS..which I opted to do. So today I get an email from CHS saying that they are STILL diligently working on reviewing applicants...

Admissions depts. are making me frustrated!

wtf?

It's pretty cool that they sent out that e-mail, though. Any news from EHS? I haven't heard anything since "Feb 15- April 15" email, and it's getting to be a bit frustrating (song as old as time).

Anyone else get an unsolicited neutral "Be patient, we're sifting through applications"-type email from Epi today?

I got the same email from admissions for EHS; they're still making admission decision...this is so nerve racking!!!

Just received my acceptance to UCLA for Community Health Sciences...

Bummer.

Apparently the Environmental Health Department had an 11-slot quota for both their MS and PhD programs (combined), and finished up their decisions last week. Sad day, but not the end of the world.

Best of luck to everyone else, and congrats to Unique Stylez!

Sorry to hear that...:-( Although if I were you, I would immediately send in my deposit to Yale. :-D

How do you know they had a 11 slot quota? And how did Berkeley inform you?

And while you're at it....tell Yale I love them😉

This is a bummer 🙁 But chin up - there are plenty of places that are lucky to have you! It's all about the end game anyways 🙂

does anyone know anything about UCLA's reproductive health or global health certificate programs? i was accepted to the CHS dept but i'm really interested in international reproductive health. i can't get a good idea of how strong UCLA is for that - does anyone have any insight?

Just accepted to UCLA for Epidemiology 😀

did anyone else get an email from UCLA regarding the fact that the deposit has been waived?

omg, so bummed! Rejected from UCLA EHS today. 🙁

What is going on with Berkeley? It is the only school I have no heard back from (accepted to UW, Columbia, Bu, Pitt and UIC for epi, mostly). I assume that since I have not heard and they have had visit days already that I'm either low on their list or rejected. Has anyone talked to them about when they are going to send out more decisions?

I'm going to bite the bullet tomorrow and call them to ask. I noticed some people here said that they will tell you if you call them. They're the only school left that's holding up my flight/visit plans with Emory.

Are you MPH in Epi/Biostats?

is anyone attending the UCLA visit day? What is it about?

i think it's just a chance for you to meet faculty and speak with students and get used to the school

Just got my "official official" accept letter from Berkeley (in email form). Guess they don't do a mailing. I was really hoping it would include info about financial aid but no such luck. Anyone heard fin aid news from them yet?

Congrats to all who've been accepted! I am still waiting for these schools... has anyone called the office recently? I got the email saying to be patient with them... gosh.. the wait is killin' me..:scared:

Thanks! I applied for Healthy policy and management

Hello there. I was wondering if you or anyone could offer some advice. I'm also interested in applying to Berkley and UCLA for the MPH w/ a focus in health management. My stats are

Undergrad: UC San Diego 2009
Major: Economics
GPA: 3.2
GRE: 500 Verbal (60th percentile) 610 Q (50th percentile) (May have to retake soon)

I've done extensive undergrad research and volunteering in Africa, but I don't have any substantial work experience.

Could you offer me any advice that would make me a better applicant? What should I improve upon to get in?

Write focused personal statements that explain what specifically you want to do in grad school, why UCLA or Berkeley is the best environment for you to do what you want to do, what you want to do after grad school, and why being in grad school is going to help you do that.

I have also heard that UCLA looks for students who have about 3-5 years of work experience. Taking some time off to get some experience can't hurt.

that's not necessarily true because i got in straight from undergrad also i know a few of my current classmates who have gotten in straight from undergrad...

Just wondering if anyone has the figure for the estimated cost of attendance at these two schools. I know the registrar's website has info on the 2009-2010 school yr but I believe that these fees are going to increase significantly for 2010-2011. Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Ugh, got rejected from Berkeley yesterday. Was I the only one annoyed by their rejection link in the email they sent? Rude. lol... I guess there's no "good" way to reject someone.

I applied to UCLA CHS and EHS, I'm hoping I get a reply very soon! They're taking a long time. 😡 In the meantime, I'm keeping my head up!

So I just got the financial aid award letter from ucla the estimated cost of attendance is $40,000. Tuition, fees and health insurance are $18,672, living expenses are $19,425, and the rest is books.... 🙁
