UCLA anyone?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
it probably will take 1-3 days before anyone officially hears becuase they mailed stuff out today. but you can always check your online status and pretty much figure it out...good luck.

darn...no update to my status page...

ive spoken to several people, all ucla undergrads, and most say that it is impossible to get in. i dont know if that is just what ucla students think or not. so is it really impossible and is it way cool if you do get in?

any current ucla students out there or those with ucla ms friends? how do you/they like it? i heard its awesome.

For those of you who are still waiting for a UCLA secondary, check your status page. I just did and found out they requested it 2 days ago. I'm stoked to get one. But is there really a chance of getting an interview this late in the game?

yes there is a chance or else they wouldnt give you the secondary...congrats

I talked to a some of the med students this summer and they all seemed to really like it a lot. But then, of course, a lot of their enthusiasm about the school was because of the location, weather, etc. so you never know. But on the whole everyone that I talked to seemed very happy.

Say you get accepted to UCLA. Do you ever wonder if you could get anything done while you're in the middle of one of the biggest cities in the nation? You've got the nightlife, the daylife (beaches etc.) and every other life you can possibly imagine. I don't know if I could resist the temptation---BUT.. i'd like to find out😀

Good thing UNLV (Las Vegas) doesn't have a med school!

How many are still waiting post-secondary. And when were you complete??
I hope they don't keep us waiting much longer!!!

My high school teacher made the same sort of statement, but I don't think it's impossible to get in. The vast majority of medical students at UCLA are undergrads from the same school. If it's hard to get into the med school as an UCLA undergrad, I think it's only because there might be LOTS of UCLA people applying to this particular school, making the competition stiff. But then again, it's not like you can't get in.

I've known two UCLA undergrads who were waitlisted at the medical school. One got in, and the other decided to attend another school.

I think the change in the curriculum is helping UCLA move in the right direction (away from lectures and more problem-solving, small-group sessions). Plus, they got that new hospital, so I think it's getting better than ever before. If you are into research, I believe they got tons of opportunites for that. There's a med student I know who's doing a year of research fellowship between her 2nd and 3rd years. She's not MD/Ph.D. but she spent quite a lot of time in the lab.

i've been complete since 8/29/03 🙁 i would do anything for UCLA... but i have a feeling it is too late now. everytime i call them they say i am in committee. i don't see any way how i could be actively reviewed for so long.

I'm waiting post-secondary too bell and wuzupdoc, but things aren't looking too good. It's been a damn long time that my file has been "under review," unless if by under review they mean "rejected." 🙄 LOL. I'm out of state though. Complete in Oct.

I had completely given up hope but behold in JANUARY, after being accepted at other places, I get a SECONDARY from them. I don't get it, did my application just get lost or something? Well, the way i figure it, miracles are possible, i'm gonna go ahead and fill this out tonight. good luck to all the other late secondaries out there.

In case you guys haven't heard, admission people have told some applicants that applications are not reviewed in the order they're received. So completing early doesn't mean you'll hear back early.

And the whole thing about UCLA undergrad not being able to get back into the med school. It's like the biggest myth ever. Obviously a lot of undergrad applied here and didn't get in! Spaces are limited and no med school will want 100% of its students to be from its undergrad.

By the way, I'm an undergrad at UCLA, applied and interviewed last November, now it's just weeks and weeks of waiting.

So I have some status check questions about the ucla website for the on-the-ballers:

1. Has anyone gotten the box next to the final decision letter filled in? Mine are blank.

2. Also it tells me transcripts have been requested. Don't they only need that when you've been accepted?

Anybody? Anybody?

You were supposed to send a transcript when you were invited for an interview. I have nothing next to the "final decision letter" box (but I also interviewed Jan. 5).

so has anyone's status page been updated with a "final decision letter"?? mine hasn't....

Interviewed on Mid November. No decision letter yet.

But I'm an international applicant, and it seems like UCLA reviews people like me and also out-of-staters later.

I interviewed Dec. 11 and there's nothing on my "final decision sent" space. My interviewer told me I should be hearing from the school right about now. I don't think it will good news though 🙁

dude, they dont even have any love for students/alumni 🙁

nope you gotto go to usc for that kind of love

hey how long does it take to finally get an interview date after you send in your materials the next day?

a week? over a week?

but yeah i dont think its impossible to get in once you get an interview...its almost 40% acceptance rate if you get an interview i think. just hard to get that interview.

yup, no love from ucla. i have no secondary and no rejection. i totally agree that it is sort of annoying to get a secondary in january (feb?) when i've already been accepted elsewhere. i am going to friggin hand deliver that stupid secondary if i get it!

hey how long does it take to finally get an interview date after you send in your materials the next day?

by materials...do you mean the dates on which you are able to attend? it took about 2 weeks for them to send a date to me, and that was during xmas. but if you're talking about after sending in the secondary, then only god knows how long.

40% is probably for international applicants who got interviewed. For applicants as a whole, I think it's more like 20-25%. Don't get me wrong, they're not easier on international applicants. Last year they only interviewed 6 international students or so.

hey i was wondering the same thing. i sent in my secondary the second week of december and I still haven't heard anything back about an interview date. do you think it's wise to call the admissions office?

Does anyone know if UCLA has started sending out a batch of acceptances for January?

yup, i'd say call them.....

i sent my secondary in the first week of december....i just called ucla admissions office and they said that the committee is still reviewing and sending out interview invites and you should hear from them by the end of this month......so keep your fingers crossed everyone. 🙂

Found out that some letters (post-interview) will be sent out the end of this month, while others will be sent out Feb 15. No letters have been sent out so far.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info 411! hahaha

Forget medicine, I am going to be a stand-up comedian.

Oh the joy of rejection. +pissed+ (checked via phone and confirmed... i must admit UCLA has a nice admissions staff from the people I did talk to over the last 2 mos)

I think I was too unrealistic in hoping for a UCLA interview. 🙁

Congrats to all those with interviews and potential acceptances
though!

That sux. I am bummed 'cuz I was totally routing for you. Good luck with your other schools--it sounds like you have some great ones lined up.

Aww thanks snowbear, and I hope you hear good news post-interview 🙂 I've also been periodically reading the saga that is the UCSF thread--good luck with them as well!

How late in the cycle does UCLA interview?

What is the longest amount of time anyone has endured between submission of the 2' and notification of an interview?

Thanks!

Hey Lux--Sorry to hear that u didn't get an interview. Is your status page updated?

Bell,

No change on my status page, i.e. it doesn't say any date next to "final decision letter sent" . But the lady on the phone told me the rejection letter would be mailed in a few weeks.

good luck

Sorry Lux,

However, I'm under the impression that you already got interviews or acceptances at some good schools. Besides I think you're not a Californian right? If you're not from California and didn't attend a UC undergrad, I think it'll just be really hard to get in.

i dont understand lux, did you receive a letter saying that you were rejected pre interview. i dont think you were told that over the phone.

She did indeed tell me over the phone, but that's probably because I told her I was flying out to California from the East Coast for another interview, and wanted to know if I could "coordinate" the times. I think maybe with some other people that didn't have my situation she would have said "you will be receiving a letter in the mail soon."

damn 2 weeks for an interview date....blah... haha

thanks for the info...now i dont have to wait for anything for another week.

and about the 40% number i got from the applied interviewed accepted enrolled list and out of the number of instate people who interview and get accepted is around 40%. Its about the same for all the UCs except maybe SF which I didnt check the numbers for.

Good luck Jlee on your interview! If you have any Qs about the day or the campus let me know. Bring some cash because the $ they gave you for lunch really isn't enough. Also, remember your passport picture. In my opinion, they really don't sell the school to their interviewees.

Well congrats!

So, what's up with UCLA? When are we suppose to hear from them?

I was told that letters would be mailed in early January w/decisions. Anyone else hear that. What about the Jan. 15th meeting/decisions?

I am exhausted from running after the mailman/mailwoman. In fact, I know, not only the exact time the mailtruck comes around the corner, but also the uniform colors of each mailperson...

Right now I feel like🙁 In a while, I am gonna be
pretty:meanie:

Hmmm actually UCI is more like 60% and UCSD was 50% (interviewed and accepted eventually). I kinda knew on these interview days that I had an excellent shot.

Doesn't the fact that you got interviewed mean that you have a shot at getting accepted regardless of your international student status. I am asking because, i got interviewed there last week and i am also technically an international student.

"Technically"? Well if you have a green card or American passport, then you're NOT an international applicant. If you're on a working or student visa now, you ARE an international student.

I mentioned that UCLA may review international applicants later b/c there's so few spots that it's safer for the school to finish interviewing most or all the interviewees before making decisions.

this really sucks... i would have forsaken all others for UCLA, but i think i finally have to come to terms with the fact that they did not think i was worthy 🙁 does anyone know how receptive they would be to talking about my file... like telling me what they didn't like and what i could do to improve??... i am starting to consider reapplying, but i would have to retake the mcat, and i am just not sure if i could take another round of this....????

have you gotten interviews or acceptances elsewhere??

to reapply again just for one school sounds extreme if you have other options.

yes, i know it is too extreme---i think that is just my frustration talking... i've been accepted to UC Irvine, and i know i would be crazy to pass up on that. i should never have placed so much hope on one school... i set myself up for that one. but i would still like some feedback on my file, i just don't know if that is a reasonable request.
